ben's the kind of guy that you would do well to be found with if you were stuck on an alien planet and found a ship capable of escaping that planets atmosphere but you just had to figure out the controls and maybe reconfigure some of the propulsion system
That's cool. You could project with a pico projector inversed from behind (with a sheet of tissue paper) and make a little interactive music display or something.
You can use it to build/support a CNC machine controller (or something else). With a non-functional touchscreen tablet or a laptop screen or you can 'draw' fixed buttons on a panel to fit behind the glass. Benefits: No dirt can go inside (the buttons), especially when you make a case for it. I think this find can be still pretty useful.
The sheer amount of joy coming from the old hardware working more or less fine on Windows 10 actually does bring in some strong LGR vibes to it. I approve.
We built a ton of machines that used magic touch touchscreens. We opened up the LCD's and mounted the bare touchscreens inside I still have a drawer full of keytec stuff- floppy discs, glass cleaning clothes. I still use them to clean my glasses.
He might be more inclined to human pointed lasers because our hands aren't steady. He probably sees it bouncing around a tiny bit and interpret it as a bug. But the motors might hold it too still. Maybe try adding in some noise into the servo position?
By the way, I believe the reason they had separate drivers for 98 and for ME was because ME added support for Windows Driver Foundation (WDF) drivers. And it is likely for the same reason the device still works in Windows 10 without additional effort.
Seeing that floppy disk reminds me of my desire to set up a mid-90s virtual machine running windows 3.11 - Complete with a physical floppy drive and magnetic HDD for at least semi-authenticity. :-)
Pretty sure this came out in 1999. I say this because the retirement home I taught computers at had one of these on the single computer in their "computer lab." It was always shifted to the side because the tab things weren't stuck down. And I just looked them up, and they're STILL AROUND. WHAT.
Cool pickup (and reverse engineering) - there was a phase in the 90s were touch screen were set to be the next big thing! Then people realised they didnt want smears over their screen lol. Then later we started getting tablets and people weren's so fussed. Why is it that we dont want finger prints on our monitors, but we're OK with them on phones and tablets lol.
My parents had a touchscreen addon for their old CRT computer. The screen was made of what looked like screen door screen and it had a pen which plugged into the computer. I don't know the exact computer but it kind of looked like a IBM Model 5150.
It's been way too long since the days when I had a CRT monitor, so I can't remember how (un)common this tech was. But dang this sort of thing would have been super impressive if I seen it back then. Imagine playing something like Starcraft or Heroes of Might & Magic with this?
Hey Ben! Love to see your videos! Been watching your work ever since your early lapinhackintop days! Also I love that your cat's name is Bud, haha! You could use this touch screen to make a sort of interactive map table with!
Seems like an over engineered solution to bias the screen with AC instead of making the voltage gradients go 1 way. Maybe there's a capacitance between the 2 planes they're trying to dissipate. Resistive has had a 2nd life in grocery stores.
I thought I was watching LGR and was surprised to see a scope and the Arduino IDE, I never knew he did this kind of stuff. Woke up after seeing a laser controlled by a crap touchscreen ... ah yes it must be Ben.
It probably works on Windows 10 because it uses a standard USB device class. This is the same reason that very old USB keyboards and mice still work fine. I bet you could get it to work on Linux too, and possibly macOS.
This reminds me of a LCD display which you hooked up tp your PC's VGA port and then place it on a overhead projector to to presentations! (B.t.w. I like Bud)
Gotta hand it to the patent invention of the touchscreen adapter. It was ahead of its time but if it was made recently, it would be seen as the worst attempt of a cash grab. The oscope capture kind of looks like some type of amplitude shift keying (ASK).
That is not too bad. It could be an optical break beam array like on old production level Xerox printers. I have actually used those printers and their touch screens.
Can Arduino's Serial Plotter be set to XY mode to simulate the location within the touchscreen's active area? Oooh, oooh, can you put the scope in XY mode and do the same? No, wait, mount the touchscreen on the laser rig and see if you can align it like a head's up scope (parralax, I know) to visually see/point to where the laser is... Clearly I have no life other than to write useless comments on Ben's videos. Seriously, this was a fun video, Ben. Do more like this!
My elementary school had one of these in the computer lab (would've been around '05)! Super cool but I never got to try it because it was only meant for students w motor issues or learning differences
"The second value is the 'h', and the first value is the 'y'." (18:43) Mixing naming conventions again, Ben? Such a Renegade! (Awesome TV show, by the way!)
The driver probably works because it's using the USB HID protocol. The drivers for 98/ME were likely because support wasn't as good back then - it's probably not a specialized driver for that hardware.

I get that it's cool that it works, but being on USB I don't think it needs special drivers. It's a USB HID pointer, basically a mouse with absolute positioning. I believe those are pretty much a USB standard.
I was wondering if the screen controller IC was just a mask programmed PIC or similar that has been remarked, but if I counted correctly it's a 30 pin package which is super uncommon. Seems like an unnecessarily high number of pins for the application. Did you check the comms between the touch controller and the USB bridge? Does it enumerate as a HID device?
I literally clicked because I thought it was an LGR video. I was shocked and happily surprised when it turned out to be Ben!
I must say Clint's videos inspired me to start checking out Goodwills again after like 15 years of not doing so.
