About to start my rotifer and triger pods culture so I remembered this video Remi did and only notice today that Bernie was there sitting in the tank at 0:50 LOL. Great video by the way.
Glad you enjoyed it! That's my goal for this series. There's a lot of videos out there but most of it is convoluted. I just want to make it approachable! Thanks for hanging out!
I love having rotifers on hand. I've been thawing my frozen food in rotifers! I found reef nutrition's instructions were to keep the rotifers going for fry and to keep max available. I've started harvesting 90% of my culture and gives me few days before I need to harvest again. But I'm still new, learning along with you!
Yeah, I think once you get the basics down it's a feel kinda thing. I'm just following instructions to a T right now. Just trying to learn as best I can so it's one less thing to worry about when the eggs happen. It's been very eye opening!
This video couldn't have come at a better time! I'm starting up a cinnamon clown breeding tank and the whole rotifers have been the most confusing part.
Hope it's a little more clear for ya! I'll be honest, I'm probably gonna have to make 1 final wrap video with everything I've learned at the end of all this. Good luck with your cinnamons!
@@BahamaLlamaCoral yeah I wasn’t planning on breeding the clownfish at all but once they start laying eggs routinely my wife got super into the idea of raising baby clowns and I feel it will be a great learning experience for my daughter. I’ll keep you updated :)
So does this make you a millionaire?? At least in rotifers? 😜 Also, so funny you sneaked in that Bernie meme at 0:51! 😂 Hopefully I'm not the only one who caught that haha
I’ve been in the hobby for 4 years now and I’ve had all kinds of fish and coral, but clown breeding really seems to fascinate me. I just got a new pair of nearly naked clowns too. I hope they breed someday 😊
It would be difficult to keep them in the refugium. You can always supplement the tank but I don't think it would be an effective way to grow a culture.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral Ahh bummer, I'll be starting up my first reef in about a month or so. After it's been up and running for a year or two I'm gonna try my hand at breeding clowns myself, thanks for the series mate 👍
I dont expect you to respond given how many months you posted the video but how come the pump doesn’t put all of your culture into the HOB filter? Does the salinity need to be 1.03?
I kept the culture around 1.013ish. Rotifers are pretty resilient and can actually be kept at a variety of salinity levels. The HOB filter will not harm the culture and the floss that they offer has plenty of space for the rots to get through.
@@BahamaLlamaCoral thank you for taking the time to reply, it’s much appreciated and wasn’t expected. You have great content as always and hopefully I can start raising my clown babies too
My tips Buy a food grade bucket from home depot the white one not the Orange one. Probably harmless but it's only 2 extra bucks. Also if you don't think it'll upset your corals to much slowly drop your salinity a little maybe 1.23
@@rich81090 They are a bit too small for those guys. They'll still be beneficial for the overall reef tank but not a good primary food source for fish. Sucks because they are easy to culture!
What questions do you have? I did see a couple from a previous comment so I'll answer those. The idea is that you purchase a bag of rotifers and as long as you take care of the water, keep them fed & harvest them so they don't overpopulate the bucket you could have them in perpetuity. They will reproduce on their own if the environment is correct.
Hey Remy, love your channel. If you're craving Thai food or sushi come check out Zen Thai in Crestwood. We've got a reef tank at the restaurant that has breeding clown fish. Im following this series and will attempt to raise my clown babies as well. Cheers!

I'm thinking I'lll need to do a wrap video at the end of this whole process to refine some of these noob mistakes.
8:17 is a very flattering shot of Remi

I would love that! I'm not ready for another pair at the moment but might be interested in the near future.

I wondered about that HOB filter that you posted in IG. Now it makes sense.
It's a dream! It seems like the typical culture gets gunky, fast...this hasn't done that yet! I think the HOB is doing a great job.
Love the ending :)
Good luck on the rotifers! And yay! Corals at OSA again! 🎉🎉

@@BahamaLlamaCoral ahh, but never let that meme die 🥲 it needs AT LEAST 15 years of fame 🤣
Try bumping the temp up in the clowns tank a little bit, could get them to spawn
I keep forgetting to bump it - gonna do that today! Thank you!
Can I do that for freshwater too?
I think so. I don't know about this particular species but there are freshwater rots.
Thanks for the inadvertent (and kinda awkward) alexa trigger!
Love it!
I accidentally started a rotifer culture in the back yard with old tank water . In cold weather too.
Maybe phytoplankton culture, not a rotifer culture

It's fascinating to me because it's possible at a hobbyist level with "minimal" gear. I love exploring these new (to me) facets of the hobby.
Very cool video and lots of information. How long will the rotifers live in the bucket? Or indefinitely with proper care ad feeding?
The 20% harvest happens everyday so it's just a continuous loop.
Miiight be a dumb question but since you brought it up are rotifers something I could get to reproduce in my refugium?
It would be difficult to keep them in the refugium. You can always supplement the tank but I don't think it would be an effective way to grow a culture.

Remy, are u using spawn aid? That helps according to Robert King’s clownfish
Didn't know that existed! Thank you - researching now.
Saw your post on insta, came here.
Welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
the bag of rotifers. how long they last. how often do you have to buy a bag of them how long does ur bucket full last ????
Would you be willing to ship a weeping willow frag to Nashville if I pay for it all
I truly just don't have any available. Of the 4 frags I made a couple weeks ago...they are all spoken for.
Bahama Llama Coral dang will you be making any frags soon if so could I get one of those
Dude... intro music at his best
There you are! Thank you so much! I very much enjoyed this track too.
What size micron sieve should I use to filter the algae out but let’s rotifers through? I’d like to filter algae out and then collect rotifers.
Good question. I'm running into that now. I'll let you know if I find out.

What micron is the sieve?
41 - It's good for catching rotifers but I kinda want a larger sieve to filter out the other sediments when doing a water change.
With success, what will you do with all those clownfish?
Hopefully you'll grab a pair! Honestly, if I have a ton I'll probably disperse in our community here in St. Louis. Maybe sell to LFS?
How much did all this cost? (I mean the rotifer cultures and everything)
About $100ish.
Culturing live rotifers are good for reef tanks in general.
Definitely learning this!! I have a feeling my tanks have been enjoying the live rots.
Heater?
None. Water temp is around 70.
I bred 1000s clowns for 5 yrs. Feel free to contact me w any questions. Doesn’t look like much has changed other than the bucket filters.
I have so many questions always. lol. Can you be on call? 😂
@@BahamaLlamaCoral sure! But I’m out of clown game, and now focusing on zoas.
Would these be beneficial just for your tank even if your not breeding?

Rotifers need a lower salinity. You can ramp them up over time.
