[Censored]!!! The Toms are making me doubt my plans for a 20x30 foot multi-deck layout. They are also making me rethink my choice of hobbies, too.
Their small layouts might not fit everyone's desires for their dream layout, but I think we can all learn something from them. Narrow shelf depth can lead to wider aisle space. A 1-foot or less shelf can be sceniced faster than a deeper scene, saving time and money - less lumber, too, and we all know how high those prices have risen since the pandemic.
I really love these podcasts! ❤

Just now watched this on 12-23-24. Tom Johnson is an amazing man with skills beyond reality. I mean he sees things through eyes that see the missing elements and then he adds those elements. He has helped me so much with my grain elevators. One thing , though, Tom. That orange tractor from Artitec is a Case VA, not a Massey Ferguson. LOL Merry Christmas to all.

I think what I love the most about Tom Johnson's modeling is just what he says, the amount of nostalgia embedded in each scene. Just the shear amount of minute details that you don't initially notice, but without them, you would know that something about it just isn't complete.

For water I would have everybody go to Boomer Diorama and he has a very simple and good video on water and he uses none of the "store bought" regular things. His water looks great. With his method you don'e have to put up damns or worry about things dripping off of the layout. Boomer makes fabulous trees also. I've been to the UP yard in Laramie Wyoming many times and the dirt is covering almost all of the ties and you can see little ballast in the yards. Have a friend with a wonderful layout and he has a scrap yard with a wooden fence around it and he has about 200 hours in this diorama on his road. Did everything board by board.

I like Boomer's method too for water. Its funny how you can dive into a scene or diorama and spend HOURS and HOURS losing yourself adding all those details!

Never ever pour water items directly onto the layout! Build a removable section and do it on the workbench. Then re-attach the water section to the layout.
