- Inspired as a boy by the fantastic comic-strip fiction of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom forged a high-flying reality as a man, becoming one of America's first astronauts and the first man to go into space twice in a capsule vessel. Although Gus Grissom died at age 40 in 1967, he cut an integral path through several seminal moments of the 20th century, including 100 fighter-pilot missions in the Korean War and test-pilot duty in California.
The Indiana native and Purdue University graduate's life, legacy and motivations are recalled in the latest episode of "The Boilermakers," an ITaP-produced documentary series chronicling famous Purdue graduates that airs on the Big Ten Network.

I grew up in Southern Indiana, about 50 miles from Mitchell, and when Gus died, it was like losing a neighbor and friend. A few years later, at age 14, I visited the Gus Grissom memorial in Spring Mill State Park. It was a powerfully moving experience for me and my mother. And we will never forget our neighbor. We love you, Gus!
My favorite Gus Grissom story is when he spoke to a group of employees at General Dynamics, builders of the Atlas rocket. He was never much for speeches and despite being given time for a full speech uttered three words: “Do Good Work.” This was met with thunderous applause and became a sort of rallying cry for the team. Goes to show that few words spoken eloquently can make a difference. Boiler Up Gus, til Valhalla.
Thank you for this, Gus Grissom was one of my childhood heroes.
Gus was a tough, no-nonsense looking type of guy, the type of guy you wanted on your side in a fight. I've never heard any one mention this before, but it's time there was at least a commemorative postage stamp honoring the Apollo I astronauts.
Best documentary I've seen yet on the amazing life and career of a very brave man......RIP Gus, Ed and Roger.

That was a good, fairly unbiased documentary. Gus was one amazing individual. I believe everything about Gus's achievements. Not so much the stuff after.

I was at the site at Canaveral today. Fascinating-especially the fire deflectors which were moved under the rocket on tracks. It;s sad that these places of history are not preserved. It's quite desolate out there. Gus looked like one cool dude.
Indiana is a great State and Lawrence County is an awesome place to live. We have 3 Astronauts that came from here Kenny Bowersox, Gus Grissom, and Charlie Walker. Big achievements from the 47th county. Gus has always been one of my personal heros! He is a pioneer and had balls of steel. Gus is from the time when REAL men were made. I am Proud to be an American and very proud to be a Hoosier!!!
I had the honor of serving at Grissom AFB (Bunker Hill) in the early 80s. I thought of him often. RIP Gus, Roger and Ed. p.s. I'm from Ohio and of course followed the legacy of John Glenn

Had Gus lived on, he would have surely been selected to join Neil Armstrong on the first lunar landing mission in the summer of 1969. His well lived life should be an inspiration for all of us to do your very best and face whatever danger comes along.
actually, Gus was Deke Slayton's first choice to be the first person on the moon, Armstrong would be on Apollo 12. Deke managed the astronaut office at the time and he and Al Shepard did the prime and back-up crew assignments.

Grissom was a great pilot, kept his head under the most difficult circumstances. He deserved better, and the Apollo program was rushed way too fast. They were just not thinking about the extreme danger of high pressure O2. Safety first is a rule that became a rule the hard way unfortunately.

A true American patriot; an honest man. He was a whistle blower as to the folly of the NASA Apollo mission. He was exposing (not maliciously, but honestly) that NASA woulkd not be able to meet JFK's time plan of going to the moon by 1969....notwithstanding the truth and fact that we cannot and never did land on the moon. Wow, Gus was better than I ever imagined - 18 orbits in less than 5 hours (at 33:25). So much for editing. One of my favorite quotes was Gus was visiting one of the factories, and suddenly was asked to say a few words to the gathered workers. Not one to waste time, Gus told them "Do good work" Within days there were "Do Good Work" signs all over the factory. (I think this was Apollo and not Gemini, but I could be wrong about that)

Wow...this is a nice video for the memory. It makes sense that the memory was when I learned about flag half mass. The oddity is as well Indiana has a few losses that had potential. The grounding tower seemed to have issue. Perhaps nightmares are all too real. Was it attached? Eisenhower was one prompt from what I'm hearing. The endocrine to civil aeronautical station means not just military. What gives with the play on top secret or excuse that allowed less to check for problems. It was checked the night before the testing or 2 nights to count steps and timing. The scene was taped off yet the climber looking found. Safety and of course how many steps to see. He hadn't forgot to seal ..it may have been purpose. ...so his discrepancy is real. ..maybe the stair climb was to stop the testing so the attempt wasn't successful. ...of course it could be wrong. If I had a public account I would compare notes about such nightmare.
The age ordeal as well talked over as the selection of ethnic played right in too. The window was soon a automatic covered one. When Sheppard was announced...the movie about a doctor with same name came out. Then the liberty bell that was in Washington was thought moved to Kentucky..as it was debate authentic or not. It was not a color scheme..it just fit in the Times then.

Nasa is still trying to find ways to shield astronauts from radiation found in belts around the earth.
They first need to solve problems regarding such radiation BEFORE sending man into those regions or beyond those regions.
IF APOLLO INDEED TRAVELED THROUGH THOSE REGIONS NASA WOULD NOT HAVE ANY REASON TO STILL STUDY THOSE REGIONS OF SPACE.
THEY WOULD NOT NEED TO FIND WAYS OF SHIELDING THE ASTRONAUTS AGAINST RADIATION FOUND IN THOSE REGIONS.

While that would be a more compelling story, the sad truth was they died from NASA and the engineers getting complacent and making terrible errors and outright stupid decisions.

I was crushed when I learned of the Apollo 1 disaster. I was a young boy back then.
wow,that's awesome he took his firs airplane ride in Vincennes. he grew up in the same area I did.
He was my third cousin. I wish I got to meet him.
He really was first and foremost an Engineer. He was neck deep in the development of both the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft and probably knew them better than any of the astronauts hence his selection for first flights of both. I’m sure he knew better than anyone what a mess the Apollo block 1 was. He must have been very frustrated.

There was no evidence discovered when they raised the Mercury capsule from the ocean that either supported or discredited Grissom’s version of events. The statement that it exonerated him is false. However I agree with his brother that the idea that he would panic at that stage of the mission makes no sense given his training, experience, background in combat and the fact that the mission was over when the hatch blew
On the whole being a test pilot was a lot more dangerous than being astronaut. The rate of death amongst test pilots that was accepted at the time is staggering.

oh yeah the 100% oxygen wasn't the problem, that was always used after launch. It was the very high pressure in this test. And that would never happen again.
Every day I put on My Civil Air Patrol Uniform ( Allentown Redbirds Squadron ; New Jersey Wing ; U.S. Air Force Auxiliary ) I think about the ultimate sacrifice that Colonel Grissom made on board Apollo 1. White II, Chaffee & Grissom are True American 🇺🇸 Heroes who gave us hope for an America 🇺🇸 First Agenda for Space.

So sad the otherwise interesting movie "The Right Stuff" depicted him as it did, as he was no longer there to contradict this wrong perception, that on the other hand seemed to glorify John Glenn in a period the ex astronaut was considering running for president. But I never understood why he wasn't received by the White House as was the first astronaut.
Actually, NASA believed Gus from the gitgo. That drama was cooked up by the movie producers for dramatic effect. Same thing happened with the movie JFK. 90% of it is fiction.
