This is easily one of the most difficult pieces for solo marimba. The way you made it sound incredibly smooth is amazing. Wow. Bravo!!!

blows my mind every time i watch it man!!
So I was cleaning house & found an old score of "Two Mexican Dances" from grad school back in the 80's (I used for an electronic music class for some reason...I don't play the marimba) & thought I'd give it a listen on YT...then your performance of this piece came up automatically and I have to say it's about the neatest thing I've heard in a while, and your performance was incredible! Though I play the 'King of Instruments' - the trumpet - I was marveling at the flow of notes/sticking/walking the range of the marimba...and controlling 2 sticks per hand flawlessly for 8 minutes?!

Amazing! I just started looking at this piece a few days ago. You definitely inspired me keep working at it! It's no doubt a challenge but I love how everything fits so well on the instrument. Most sections at least. Definitely a right of passage work for marimba. Loved your performance!

Carl Tafoya Sorry I missed you! I didn't end up doing any hot pepper sight reading at PASIC, though let it be known that I have eaten a habanero pepper and played marimba on camera, which hopefully will be released soon...!
Doug Perry It's all good in the hood! I'm not too prominent in the world of percussion, being only a Sophomore in high school! And yay!! Not that I'm in favor of you eating habanero peppers, but I like the stuff you put out!

1:39 and 2:35 can be sticked (is that a word?) the way they appear in the score. 2:01 is a little tricky--the angles are awkward. I think I stuck to the score, but you have to move your body around to help prevent mallet collisions!

Slow and steady wins the race! I spent a lot of time practicing slowly and carefully with a metronome. Pace yourself--assign yourself a specific number of measures a day to learn, perhaps one or two phrases at a time (depending on how difficult the section is). I used 3 Vic Firth M115s, and a M113 in the bass position.

Amazing performance! I am about to start learning this piece myself. Just curious, what mallets did you use? The music suggest the LHS15H multi toned mallets. Did you use those or another multi toned mallet?

I know this is a hard question but could anybody tell me what the notes are for the run up at 3:30 through 3:34?
+Firehawk9000 In case you still haven't found your answer a year later, the notes are Ab, Eb, C, G, Eb, Bb, G, D, Bb, F, D, A, F, C, A, E for the run up, and starting from E it's then B, F#, G, D, A, B, F#, C#, D, A, E, F# for the run back down. Basically it's a series of thirds upwards and 4 groups of fourths downwards.

Hey all, I'm learning this piece right now and I'm at a utter loss as to how to stick 1:39, 2:01, and 2:35 How does one stick them?
Nice! Do you play any other percussive instruments besides marimbas/xylos, etc?
I do! I play all of the standard orchestral percussion collection--so, snare drum, timpani, accessories, etc. I also play drum set and steel pans!

Hey Doug, how long did it take to learn this piece the first time (starting from nothing)?
Let's see... I probably started it in September of that year, and probably performed it first in April? I don't remember exactly, but I think 7 months is probably a good guess!
Did you study it intensively or was it a "side project"?
I studied it very intensely! I practiced it for at least an hour every day. This was a part of my course of study--I had to get it ready for my recital, as well as a competition!
