JWST observes a star and notices a regular dip in the star’s luminosity. When light passes through an exoplanet’s atmosphere, JWST is able to spread that light into a spectrum and notes the absorption lines. Whatever absorption lines there are, that’s what elements are in the exoplanet’s atomsphere. Like, you understand it’s not some super scope that’s able to see the surface of planets literal light years away!
