Ranked in the top 10 Alpine resorts, Zermatt retains its traditional Swiss style and rustic charm.
In the narrow streets, still remain 16th century wooden barns and stores, which were used for storing hay and wintering livestock. Mice will certainly not crawl into such a barn on stilts. And all this antiquity side by side with first-class hotels and shops of expensive Swiss watches.
In Zermatt you will not see cars: you can get here only by train, and around the resort run electric taxis, free electric bus... Or you can take a carriage.
More than 2 million tourists visit Zermatt every year, attracted by the wonderful ski runs in winter and by the great opportunities for outdoor activities in summer.
But the main attraction of Zermatt is the most photographed in the world, unusually beautiful and such inaccessible Matterhorn mountain.
The Matterhorn is the last conquered peak in the Alps. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, it was first ascended by British climbers in 1865. During the descent, four of this group fell into the abyss.
They are buried in the Zermatt church cemetery, as are many others who died in the local mountains and who, like this young American climber, chose to climb.
Besides the Matterhorn, Zermatt is surrounded by 37 snow-capped peaks over 4,000 meters high.
It is a unique mountainous region with hundreds of kilometers of cable cars and hiking trails, allowing you to see forests overgrown with rhododendrons and flowering alpine meadows, picturesque mountain villages, glaciers and rugged stone landscapes.
During the short alpine summer, plants tend to show their brightest colors, and the intense ultraviolet light makes these colors even more saturated.
Here I found edelweiss for the first time in my life. But if you're not as lucky as me, you can buy a whole flower pot in the village.
The most popular hiking trail is the 5 Lakes Walk at an altitude of 2,500 meters. There are no steep ascents and descents and there are unique Matterhorn views.
You will see completely different panoramas from the hiking trails on the side of the vertical northern wall of the Matterhorn with powerful glaciers and waterfalls falling off the rocks. Here, at the very foot of the mountain, lies a deserted stone valley left by a melted glacier, which gradually turns into forest and alpine meadows.
The Gornergrat cogwheel railway is one of the main attractions not only of Zermatt, but of whole Switzerland. It was built 120 years ago and became the first electrified cog railway in the country.
Trains leave Zermatt every 24 minutes and make 4 intermediate stops.
In 33 minutes, the train rises to the zone of eternal snows, glaciers and lifeless rocks.
Here, at the top of Gornergrat, is the highest hotel in Europe, as well as a scientific astronomical observatory and several observation platforms with fantastic views of cracked glaciers and snow caps of mountain peaks.
Even higher than Gornergrat, at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters, there is the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, where eternal winter reigns and where the cable car with new panoramic cabins leads.
People get here to admire the mountain peaks, hike on the glacier or climb the Breithorn, the snow cap of which is just a stone's throw from here.
But I could not deny myself the pleasure of skiing in the summer.

Добрый день . Пишу вам отчитаться за Церматт . Мы летом на 10 дней поехали , сделали максимум треков сколько сил хватило , погода была супер , так же на итальянскую сторону заглянули. Церматт фантастика , я рада что вовремя увидела ваш ролик .Спасибо .

Спасибо за прекрасные отзывы. Это действительно прекрасная идея - спрятаться от нынешней жары на леднике. Но поторопитесь: в сентябре в горах быстро холодает. Что касается проживания в Церматте, тут никаких секретов нет - комнату дешевле 100 евро за ночь найти трудно. Экономичный вариант проживания в Тэше (Täsch), мне кажется, больше подходит для зимы, так как стоимость поезда входит в стоимость ски-пасса, а ехать там всего 15 минут (я там жил зимой неоднократно). Впрочем, попробуйте посчитать вариант жильё+поезд. Но Маттерхорн на рассвете из Тэша вы не увидите...
