  • The process of setting the level of difficulty of a for an obstacle or task is a matter of thinking of the context and negotiationg with the players.

Great video. The negotiations is one of the things i like best about the Cypher System. You have no post roll modifiers, you negotiate the DC before the roll. That way you dint see a low roll and say "yeah but do i get a bonus for such and such?"

I've done the same in every edition of D&D, though I'm starting with things from the books and player atttributes.

Like you suggested setting a DC, no matter the system, should always be a negotiation. I always tell my players the DC upfront, I let them back off or change their plans. And I never change my procedure so they dont feel like they get screwed. And I think they appreciate it.

I've always done it that way myself.

In 5e, rules as written the players usually dont make make 2 rolls to avoid the same situation.
If the monster with a poison tail attacks it has to make an attack roll to hit you, and tgen you might get a Con save to resist the poison. So there are 2 chances for failures. But the player rarely has to make 2 rolls to avoid one thing.
When i have to adjudicate new situations i try to stick with that because IMO making multiple rolls for one thing starts to feel more like a board game.

You usually separate probabilites when the first is dependant on the next, as opposed to those that are independant. So the fact that a creature has to hit you to inject the poison to then make the poison save, means if it misses ouright it might try the stinger again as opposed to attacking someone else.
In the case of the lava jump, which has two independant probabilities, you could multiply both the percentages that are determined based on each players attributes or skills or player mods like the watered cloth. Say one player has a DC 10 con save (50%) to avoid breathing and a DC DC 12 dex save (40%) to run blindly. Again, it would be different for each player. But these two percentages would combine into a 20% chance. That would probably scare most players from making the attempt!
But, the player could negotiate and say that if I breathe in the gas while running I could stop (or pass out) before jumping, so I should get a chance to make that first roll before trying the next! This means if you make the it, it puts your odds on the next back at 40%.

Rope gimmick, tie run to PC for safety if they miss the jump.
Sprint by the other PCs and they throw you at the moment you jump for a few extra yards.
    Otherwise known as backyard play.
Two players holding a rope as the third person runs circles around them to build up speed on a tight rope, so in a way sling the other over the jump space. Hench the reason why many groups refuse to go out without a halfling or gnome.
All things can .. nearly .. be done, just say the PC takes temporary Hp/ ability point damage due to mental stress or athletic muscle lactic acid build up. PC now has the .. shakes .. which effects dexterity hand actions.
Reason the military has all that jogging/running. When in doubt, move to the nearest point of cover.
Hench, run for your life. Along with all the training to deal with coming down from fight or flight highs/ the shakes from surprise fights.
Trail mix of dried fruit & nuts, or a PeanutButter & jelly sandwich helps to take the edge off.
I remember .. school .. fights, and one of the first things they did was hand both of the fighting students a small thing of chocolate milk or juice drink.

I like the rope trick ideas! And in terms of constant training, as Vince Lombardi used to say " fatigue makes cowards",
