      I personally believe they're alive, but stuck at the bottom of the ocean. A normal descent to Titanic takes 2-2½ hours, and communication was lost about 90 minutes after they launched. This suggests they descended too fast and landed hard (either on a piece of the wreckage or on the muddy ocean floor) and got stuck. As far as why they haven't communicated...maybe a hard landing damaged their communication equipment (?)
      I think, had there been any type of pressure leak, electrical failure, or fire the pilot would've been wise enough to abandon the expedition, dump the ballast and return immediately to the surface. A pressure leak (I would imagine) would be noticed and recognized pretty quickly.
      Unfortunately, even though they may be alive now...there's nothing that can be done to tow the submersible or bring it to the surface.

    As a life-long sailor I find it stunning that there wasn't a simple Epirb on board that could be released to narrow the search zone. That is the most basic safety device found on any weekend charter boat. Accepting the risks but skipping the most basic rescue measure makes no sense - especially when wealthy tourists are paying $250,000 just to ogle at a wreck where 1,500 people died.

      I''ve probably spent all of an hour in a boat bigger than a canoe, lol, but according to the expert in the video, radiowaves don't penetrate that depth of ocean--thus there'd be no way to activate a surface beacon from the submersible in case of emergency.
      I'm guessing they had a position beacon left at the surface before their dive, because their entry point is known. But beyond that, very little is known about their location.
      The expert said acoustic (ultrasonic) waves can travel thru the ocean's depths, so that's why airplanes are outfitted with acoustic beacons--in the event they crash in the ocean, the beacon is activated & that ping can travel to the surface to be detected. But as the interviewer pointed out, that system also failed for the Malaysia Airlines crash (but ultrasonic beacons have been improved dramatically as a result of that failure).
      You don't have to answer, but do you think the submersible could remain intact at these depths (12500 ft!) for this length of time?

      @jsmcguireIII ปีที่แล้ว +98

      @@tothelighthouse9843 An Epirb would be RELEASED and float up to the surface where the radio signals transmit up to 15 miles for a minimum of 48 hrs at 406 MHz. USCG have software to calculate drift from current and wind to establish where the device surfaces so they can narrow their area and save time. The submersible should withstand long periods at depth but there is such a narrow margin that even a tiny problem with oxygen, navigation, structural failure, etc. the chances are poor they can survive this. We saw the Challanger explode and kill numerous civilian passengers after NASA blew off numerous problems to sustain the illusion of mastery. The Titanic sank for the exact same reason - hubris and blind trust in technology.

    Engineers from the carrier ship reported that communication with the Titan was interrupted 1.5 hours after the dive. This suggests that something happened to the submarine even before it reached the bottom. It takes at least 2.5 hours to get down to the Titanic. Anything could happen: depressurization is possible, the porthole cracked, there was a problem with the oxygen supply, due to which the passengers could suffocate, a short circuit and a fire inside the submarine itself, or the control simply failed, as a result of which, under the influence of an undercurrent, the submarine could be carried far beyond the area of the sunken Titanic. Nuance! If the passengers were "alive", they could simply drop the ballast and rise to the surface immediately. If the submarine is still not visible, then the chances of saving the passengers themselves are reduced to zero.

    People that are speculating that it got hung up on the wreckage are forgetting that the vessel quit sending out pings only an hour and a forty five minutes into its decent. It takes approx two and a half hours to get down to the wreck. The vessel sends out pings every 15 minutes. So if it quit sending pings at an hour and a forty five minutes which is about 45 minutes _before_ it reaches the wreck, then I hate to say it but that means something happened and the vessel was compromised on the way down. It's been suggested by a few experts I've seem interviewed on various other outlets that it could have possibly have sprung a leak somehow and imploded. And if that happened then all electrical equipment goes out which means the pings stopped and the vessel fills with water and sinks to the bottom. I'm just guessing that's probably what happened, because if it _did_ successfully descend the entire 12,500 ft with no problems going down, then it should have been sending at least 3 more pings during the remaining 45 minutes that it had left to finally reach the Titanic wreckage. They may eventually find it on the bottom somewhere but I'm betting it won't be because they reached the wreckage voluntarily and then got tangled up in Titanic debris. If the scenario I described is how it played out, then that little submersible could be _anywhere_ on the bottom due to being carried by strong currents.

      Yes, implosion. As I understand it, if there’s a leak, the problem isn’t water, it’s water pressure. The submersible would implode because the pressure outside the vessel would be a dramatic mismatch for the human habitable pressure maintained inside. I think that’s how it works.
      So if a leak formed, that would be instantly catastrophic. There would be no getting to the surface in time.

    I just watched a four part series from a travel vlogger named alanxmundo who went down to the Titanic in this very submersible. He had to make two attempts because the first one they had to cancel because it was too dangerous. He gives an excellent insight into all the preparations that the crews have to make. On his second attempt the following year his submersible actually lost communication with the ship for some minutes before it was restored. The driver of he submersible was actually beginning to start the process of aborting the descent and bringing it up to the surface when communications were restored and they were allowed to go on to the bottom. They actually spend a good hour touring the ship and seeing the "money shot" the prow etc before returning to the surface. In the end he makes some interesting comments about the company and the experience as a whole, and visits the cemetery in Halifax where hundreds of Titanic's victims are buried. I recommend you watch his videos about his excursion on the Titan, this same submersible that went missing here, if you're interested inlearning more about it. Start with Part 1 but if you just want to watch the episode where he reaches the Titanic you can skip to Part 4. Only issue is that it's in Spanish. Not sure if it's closed captioned in English . . . I am not being negative here; realistic.
    From what has been detailed, the ocean currents at 13,000 feet in depth, are very strong. They are so strong it has pushed and forced a submarine just like this one, in to the propeller of the Titantic where it got stuck temporarily.
    From what has been detailed, we learned the ocean visibility at 13,000 feet is O. It's pitch black. The submarine has a special lense that penetrates the dark spectrum of color and produces light however it's wave length is very narrow for visibility.
    What that means is, even if they can get a navy submarine down to 13,000 feet within the next 14-20 hours, it is unlikely they will spot the submarine especially if the ocean floor is throwing up particles and debris from the pure mass of pressure down there.
    People need to really be sensible about this they pretty much aren’t surviving this they’d be lucky if they find the bodies period .

      Recover it with what, even a nuclear submarine doesn't go that deep and even if it did you can't just tow it out...as need divers to attach the hook and impossible at that depth.
