  • If you have an interview coming up, watch our video on how to win the interview. How to do better on interviews and win the job.
    Things to avoid during the interview.
    Get the design job you want by interviewing better.
    As a follow up to the Resume episode, Jose and Chris give you their best tips on how to perform better during the interview so that you can land the design job you want. Follow these 7 tips on how to win the interview. (Bonus Tip)
    Jose's 3 tips-
    00:38 Don't just talk about your work. Case studies are good way around this.
    01:00 Share your process. Helps employer understand how you arrive at solutions
    01:12 Ask great questions. It's supposed to be a conversation
    02:19 The magic question to ask
    02:53 Jose recaps
    Chris' 5 tips-
    03:52 Relax. If you are being interviewed, you are good enough. Otherwise, the employer wouldn't have called you.
    04:09 Be a good listener. Gauge interest and go off the script and only talk about things that the employer is interested in. Don't bore the interviewer.
    05:08 Don't be afraid to say "I don't know". Be thoughtful in your responses and don't make up stuff. It'll make you look bad. Punt. Compliment the interviewer and say, "That was a great question. I don't have an answer to that, but let me get back to you with a more considered response."
    05:27 Be memorable by being yourself. Don't try to fit in cause you'll just fit in and no one will remember you.
    07:25 Follow up after the interview by writing a hand written note. This shows your professionalism and demonstrates that you care.
    07:51 Chris recaps
    08:32 Role play. It's a mock interview with Chris and Jose.

    I hope someone is reading this because I just landed my first job as a Junior Graphic Designer. I took what you said about showing personality so I wore some chino pants and a polo shirt to the interview and prepared 2-5 questions to ask the interviewee. They called me back for a final round interview and a week later I got the call for an offer. Thank you! Starting on the 17th of June.

    I watched this at least 50 times. What really helped me was realizing I am qualified for the job since they called me in for an interview. It helped my personality shine. Got an interview Tuesday and offer letter on Thursday!

      Kudos for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Schallingora Information Investigation Scheme (search on google)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for learning what you need to say to get hired in a job interview minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my cousin after many years got great success with it.

    Contextualizing how you present your portfolio based on the interviewer's vision of the company is genius! That reduces a lot of awkward silence while leafing through your portfolio.

    2. I mentioned about Mental health

    I still watch it each time I have an interview. It puts me in a really good mood and adds a note of confidence. Also, a hand written note is not a thing in Europe. My ex manager got a thank you card after interviewing an American designer. We all thought it was a bit desperate and a bit too much.

    I am just really amazed that you practice what you preach. Most TH-cam channels I frequent the poster hardly responds to the commentary from the audience. While it may be impossible to respond to everyone, you guys have taken the time to at least "share a moment" with the people most appreciative of your videos, myself included. This coming from someone who has the technical skills needed to be a designer, but often lacks the confidence to push through my comfort zone and be willing to take criticism or critique from future employers.

    Great interviews tips. I don't know if this video is already updated but just want to add and update some infos: Yes, some companies do call in for personal interviews even if you're not on their final list or even qualified/overqualified just because they need to fill in their EEO quotas. Sad but that happened to me a lot of times. Most companies today (2020) still hire based on cultural fit (whether they like you personally or not, what's the point of EEOs anyway?) not based on skills. Hiring methods specially of big companies still sucks, sadly. Finding job, any job, is super stressful so take care of yourself mentally and physically.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems odd that they would just waste their time like that. How do you know this to be true?

    • @sergioillus
      @sergioillus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefutur I appreciate your reply, didn't expect that! Thanks. To clarfiy: It's not a waste of time on their end, it's part of their job. How I'd known this? One of the hiring managers who interviewed me blatantly told me himself as they hired someone internally and that the interview wast just for compliance. It's so rude and unethical I know but thanks God I dodged a bullet. My resume always get through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and get interviews but I couldn't pass interviews. Figuring out what's wrong even if the interviews went well, I discovered there is such a thing called "fake interviews" where you can feel the "coldness" of hiring managers interviewing-they're just reading interview questions and getting through with it. I had several of those. Google it. Then I searched on different job search forums and I found out true enough that yes, it's a real, very unethical practice of HRs but they need to comply with it.

      @@sergioillus I know what you're saying. I've also seen companies do this, where they already know who they will hire but they post job applications anyway and go through with a facade. Whats worse than that is the times people try to scam you with interviews on google hangouts. Its creepy as hell and discouraging. I applied to a very well known high end chocolate company on linked in and was contacted with a fake hr person and CD trying to pose as them. This happened twice, the second time was too easy to tell.

    • @sergioillus
      @sergioillus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lia-hd7rh I know right? That scam is something new to me. Take care of yourself and let the job meant for you attract you, eventually it will come as it did for me (that is if you're still looking for your dream job). Even if you're prepared and did everything you can to get a job, luck also plays a big part too I believe, so Good luck to you!

    A question about the link of purchasing the core kit at the Skool. When I clicked it it redirected me to the website of The Futur's website, instead of the old pink-yellow-blue one of The Skool I saw in some other videos. How are they different?

    I agree with almost everything you advise but I am a little skeptical about responding with a question about what the company is looking for. I am afraid that this may sound rude and tricky to the interviewer and they count it negatively. I have an interview on Monday and I really want to make sure I m on the safe side guys! Isn't it nicer to just respond to what they are asking me instead of throwing them the ball and getting into the risk of making them think that I am playing tricks?

    I had a job interview request but politely turned them down saying I am going freelance. They said they can work with me freelance and now I have a call set up with them. My question is: how do I know if this is a freelance consultation or if this is still a job interview just billed as a temporary contractor? I decided to go freelance even if I die trying, so I won’t ever take another design job interview. So if it starts off with the robotic q and A questions to me, how do I turn this around and get out of the situation? I only want a freelance client where I’m positioned as the expert advisor.

    • @1234kingconan

      I made a couple mistakes in the email chain already. 1) I didn’t ask whether or not it was a truly freelance consultation or just a job billed as a 1099. 2) I was too eager to accept the phone call.

    Hello! I applied last week (at the deadline date 8th sept) for graphic designer position within an american NGO here in my country (Rwanda). They want someone who can work in-house to implement the nutrition program. I was lucky because they called me last Wednesday for a phone call interview and I succeeded it, then today morning they called me with few others selected candidates for a "practical test" but either on phone or today they didn't ask about how much would I like to get per month??? So I ended asking them: I notice we didn't yet talk about my salary in case you hire me, so I will not also talk about it, I am just a passionate graphic designer."

    I'll give a protip...don't drink coffee before an interview. It tends to make people jittery and will have you looking like you're overly nervous. Interviews are already taxing enough. And secondly, it's very hard to sell yourself and what you do while trying not to poop your pants mid interview. Hand to god truth.

    I just had an interview and I think I did great except for one question. The interviewers asked me "what was your insight?" when I was presenting one of my projects. I think I answered it okay but then I wasn't sure what insight REALLY means. It could be a silly question but .. now I'm so frustrated..:( !!

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Insight means, what dots were you able to connect on that project. What did you learn? What was your A-ha moment. Sometimes, when you get hit with an unexpected question, just pause for a minute. Ask the person, if they can ask you the question in another way.
      You can sometimes respond by saying, great question. I wish I had a great answer. But I need to think about this a little more. Can we move onto something else while I process what you said? Don't be afraid to say I don't know, or I need to get back to you.

    • @jenneek3095
      @jenneek3095 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These are useful tips guys. I was just wondering, if I ask about the vision of the company, what they do, what their clients are, and their answer will be "Did'nt you read the job description?" or " Didn't you checked out our site because all the information is there, why did you aplied here?". I'm curious about what is your opinion on this because I think that they will say that I showed up unprepared, without searching the company.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not recommend asking that question. It does imply that you weren't prepared. Plus, unless you are being interviews for a C-suite position, you won't be helping out with such high level goals.
      Instead, ask I'd like to learn more about... The core values and where they come from.
      About... The shift in direction towards brand led strategy, the challenges the company is facing now, etc...
      Don't ask questions that are easily answered via Google search.

    Since I was a teenager, interviews were the most in authentic thing to me, I wanted to be myself but I knew that would either hurt my chances of getting the job so I played it neutral. When I hear Jose talk about asking questions to show empathy, my biggest misconception was that I'd come across like an asshole and I had no authority to fix my mouth to even do that towards a potential employer (the personal ones directed to the interviewer especially). A little part of me said that the question I would ask, that interviewer probably has heard it so many times already.
