MOST CHARMING CITY IN EUROPE? (BRUGES, BELGIUM TOUR) | Eileen Aldis

  • Bruges, Belgium might just be the most charming city in Europe. If you closed your eyes and imagined a picturesque, fairytale, travel-back-in-time, absolutely breath-taking European city I'd guess that Bruges is pretty close to what's in your head. It's what European vacation dreams are made of. A veritable time capsule of medieval architecture, It's easy to understand why it's a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is rare to see so many streets of buildings all so well preserved. Walking around is like being transported back in time and history here is on another level. This town hall? It was the seat of government for more than six hundred years. This old hospital? It's been a hospital since the 1100s (and only stopped in the 1970s). The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! Ironically, the current citizens of Bruges benefit from their forebears' inability to knock things down and rebuild. Bruges is now a huge draw for tourists from around the world who flock to see the same buildings people were too poor to change. Huzzah! This is why I love history!
    Our day in Bruges started at the Folklore Museum. It's only 4 Euro and you can get a nice overview of life in the city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Don't forget to look for the black cat who lives there. He's rare to see and is one of a long line of black cats who call the museum home. We then walked (you can walk everywhere) to the Burg Square where you'll find the Stadhuis (town hall) and a little further on is the Grote Markt. The latter is the main square where you'll find see the Belfry (Belfort) and dozens of tourists. Bruges is known for two things: an abundance of beauty and an abundance of tourists seeking it. But no one cares because you're so stunned at the charming city around you. We walked on to the Church of Our Lady where the altar piece is a Michelangelo sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Made of Carrara marble, it's been stolen twice and is now safe again to view at the church. Across the street is Sint-Janshospitaal - the one that was a hospital from the 1100s to the 1970s. Now you'll find religious art and - my favourite - examples of old ambulances. A visit here makes you really appreciate modern medicine. It started to rain and we were getting hungry so we headed to the Friet Museum (Fry Museum). How could we visit Belgium without doing a deep dive into the history of fries?! We wanted to find out why so many people mistakenly call them 'French fries' - we also wanted to eat fries. Check and check. It stopped raining so we ended the Bruges tour by boarding a river cruise because there are parts of the city only visible from the water. I'd definitely recommend a boat ride if you're visiting Bruges - it's relaxing and offers a unique perspective not seen by other means. We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and hope you enjoyed this visit to the jewel of Belgium.

      I am from Texas in the United States. The first time I visited Brugge I fell in love with this city . I have traveled extensively throughout Europe. By far Brugge is my favorite. The last time I visited I cried because my husband of 25 years was no longer in my life and all the wonderful memories came flooding back. I hope to return next year. God bless❤️

    Didn't know about this city, until I saw "In Bruges" movie yesterday.
    As an italian living near Turin, which is a baroque city full of examples of art and architecture, I love ancient buildings, castles, and art in general.
    I think Bruges could be the city I'd adore to go to 🤩
    I wish I could visit Bruges once this corona Virus emergency finally stops!!
    Cheers from Italy!

    Bruges is one of my favourite places on Earth. Been there during Summer, been there during Winter, and I cannot decide when the place looks most beautiful. Drank the best hot chocolate I've ever had there. Also, you seem like a couple of really decent people. I wish you both well.

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, Matthew! Where did you have the hot chocolate? Would love to know for a future visit. This was our first time there and I can only imagine how charming Bruges is in winter time, especially picturing a tasty hot chocolate in the scene as well :)

    • @mathewbarrie2164
      @mathewbarrie2164 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After visiting the chocolate museum there is a place just a little up the road from there called the Choco Jungle Bar. There you can try chocolate drinks made to authentic Aztec and Inca recipes. I had an Aztec one made with various spices, it was an 'interesting' choice. However, we went back a second time a couple of days later and I just had a regular, normal hot chocolate and it was so thick, so creamy, it was beautiful. Please go back during the Winter sometime, you may love the place even more.

      There are A LOT of tourists! Bruges definitely deserves a place on the bucket list :) I wondered the same thing about how/why so many buildings are so well preserved and the answer is very interesting! Here's an excerpt of what I wrote in the description box --> The reason why Bruges is so well preserved has a twist: the city was too poor to renovate and rebuild. Bruges has experienced periods of great wealth, great poverty, and great wealth again. During the down times, citizens didn't have the cash to make 'improvements' to their houses and to this scarcity we owe a great deal! In the 16th century the connection of Bruges with the North Sea silted up so merchant ships could not deliver their cargo and thus the city went into a "Cinderella" sleep. Before that it was the richest city in Nortern Europe. Also the place where the first stock excange in the world was founded.

      Indeed, Bruges was the Manhattan of the middle ages, and then Antwerp, and then as the Spanish devastated our country, Amsterdam took over. In fact, the whole capitalist system was 'invented' and put into practice in the low countries and the north of Italy.

    About the origin of french fries, a more common theory is that it used to be called frenched fries, from the verb frenching.
    To french means to cut something in thin slices, sort of like julienne style, before cooking it.
    So at the very beginning it was called frenched fried potatoes which turned into frenched fries and eventually became french fries, at least that’s what we were taught in school as kids :)

    The city hall is still used as city hall. The mayor still has his offices there.
    Your pronunciation of Oud Sint-jan hospitaal is very good.
    Thank you for trying not to say French fries. Cause it really grind the gears of Belgians.

I'll most certainly follow every step of your journey there. I'm so happy you did. Brussels has its nice places too, But Brugge, Antwerpen and also Ghent are special, they are the heart of Belgium. It saddens me that people who come to europe, often go see brussels and that's it, just because it's the capital. You should go to Ghent WHEN you come back 😊🙌 I'm ashamed to say I never liked it as a kid and didn't visit it again until January of this year and it is STUNNING. Mind that only some of the buildings are middle ages period. There is also 16-17-18-19 century buildings. In order to preserve the medieval atmosphere, the city council (like 150 years +) opted in the past that any new construction in the city had to be done in this Bruges style.

    The tl;dr history of Bruges: 200 A.D. Roman settlers, 900 A.D. to 1200 A.D. Bruges became an important tradecenter due to its harbor. 1300 A.D. to 1500 A.D. Bruges became the economic capital of Northwestern Europe. It attracted Royals, architects and artists. ...All sorts of stuff happened... 1600 to 1885 it became one of the poorest cities, the two world wars didn't affect it and it became world heritage in 2000. Bruges la morte aka Bruges the dead has been preserved by accident and sheer luck.

      It's because of trading connection with Venice since the Early Middle Ages actually, when Bruges was the dominant metropolis in Europe. The first Bourse (stock exchange) was in Bruges, and the term 'bank' is from here as well, during the same time and in connection with Venice. What might be interesting too, is that in the Church de Notre Dame, there are the tombs of Marie of Burgundy and her father Charles the Bold, which you showed briefly. The tomb of her mother Isabel de Bourbon, by the way, is in the Cathedral of Antwerp. Also, the Madonna & Child was the only statue of Michael Angelo permitted to leave Italy! And...it's Belgian Fries! (it's a Belgian invention, and mistakenly called french from "frenched" (in old English, meaning finely sliced) by the Americans.)
