Tellico River Kayaking - Telli-Snow!

  • I finally got on the river with Tony and Caleb Eyl! I headed west for the marathon day trip to the Tellico. Only this time, the Tellico was a Winter Wonderland of kayaking heaven. Tony is a level 4 instructor as well as a class act on and off the river. Caleb has rocketed in his skill progression this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if the sponsors start calling. I also gave the rally call to Jerry Yang. He immediately jumped on the opportunity. He is at a weird point in his progression. He is already naturally better than many of his piers and mentors but at 2 months of paddling, he does not have the experience and river knowledge that usually accompanies that ability. So what do yo do when you are a budding extreme kayaker stuck in a class 2 world? You dig deep inside and answer the rally to fire up something bigger than you were expecting. You go run some waterfalls!!! He not only got his first waterfalls in, but also his first taste of class 4 kayaking at Jerad's Knee. His passion and natural abilities has enabled a very rapid progression with the sky as the limit. It feels like almost 20 years ago! The Tellico was my first creeking experience and I couldn't think of a better next step for Jerry! What a setting to get your first waterfalls in! Level was 2.4' on the gage. The Tellico River, TN is always a magical experience!

    Class V road. Wonder if those guys know how to roll up if they get upside down in their truck?
    This video had me really involved. Almost like I was there involved. I found myself whooping out loud when folks really stuck it, and shouting "Up! Up! Up! when they rolled. I was worried like crazy when, just before Baby Falls, he went upside down. I was afraid he was going to go over upside down, but he pulled a hero roll right back up and then stuck the landing! Very exciting.
    Yes, it's over a year old, but it was the first time for me watching it. It was definitely a different landscape than this year's New Year's trip, but oh my was it pretty. All in all, it was pretty impressive. No one swam, and getting stuck for just a short time in a hydraulic is exciting more than anything.
    This was just fantastic. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. It makes lonely winter days pass a lot more quickly and enjoyably.

    I started watching your kayak camping videos a week ago, watching you guys do it the same way we do let us know we're doing something right. Never thought I'd be interested in white water, but I've watched a couple of those so far. My favorite one being the one with P5 doing his thing and you beaming harder than he hit it (as an Eagle Scout Dad, I know the feeling). Still, I thought I'm getting up there so white water is probably not for me. Now, a video with a fellow grey beard and here I am cruising craigslist and the marketplace. I didn't need that money anyway!

    Great video! How are you liking that rewind? I just picked one up a week ago

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like it. That stern will let you know about it every now and then...like when it buried up and spit me to the right just above Baby Falls. It was my fault though. I was lazy paddling as if I was in a creeker. Boofs well, carves into eddies like a dream, fast, and other than laying back into the stern, it is very predictable. I like it! I love my braap. However, the braap is a displacement hull which means as long as Im going down river, it is the cat's meow. As soon as you turn around to try to surf, the braap becomes a scud....lol. That is where the rewind will shine as it surfs super well and is def. more playful.

    This says 2.4 ft, just watched a video that said 2.5 ft and it looked significantly beefier… is there really that much of a difference with .1ft more water?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  ปีที่แล้ว

      There could be several factors at play here. Different lens settings on the GoPros can change how big or small rapids look. The offset on the gages between the areas we run and the gage locations can cause a discrepancy. Also, it is possible that the other video simply got the level wrong in the description. I always go to the gage source when I get home from a run to verify exactly what it was while I was running. It could have been listed as 2.5 when the paddler last checked before the run but the river was actually rising and was higher when he/she was actually paddling. And yes, on a smaller creek or river like the Tellico, a little change in the gage can present a significant difference in how the water feels or looks. However, 2.4 and 2.5 are both great levels. can you share the link of the other video?

    I don't understand the "not ready for class II river" comment. Maybe I don't understand the ratings but isn't class II where WW starts? How is anyone supposed to learn WW without actually getting out there on some whitewater?

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly Josh! the day you sit in a boat for the first time, you are ready for class 2. Otherwise, it is not whitewater! It was a crazy statement.

    How in the world do you run out of gas?? Sheesh.

    • @RiverKingsKayak
      @RiverKingsKayak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha! was looking for a good gas station to err, uh, make a deposit...lol. I found out that the "60 mile" low gas light does not actually mean 60 miles...more like 35 or 40. We got lucky and limped off at an exit with a gas station just a few hundred yards away. ha ha ha ha! I'm an idiot is the only real explanation!
