Terrence Mann might sound a bit different from other "Javerts" out there, but man did he give a fantastic performance. All these actors did so well. Look at that scene when Valjean silently asks Javert to give his hat back. That silent exchange of looks and gestures was so great, very nuanced. I miss this kind of interactions nowadays.
Agreed! I love Mann's musical precision-- he's more rhythmic than any other Javert I've heard. He uses far fewer flourishes, and I feel that suits the character better. I also find him perfectly comprehensible even in this low-quality recording(not that it isn't still a delight to watch). Some of the other singers are really difficult to understand.
As someone who knew the first two Javerts from the original London production well I'm fascinated by this. Mann is using acting points and gestures that are reassuringly familiar
Now that you mention it, Terrence Mann is probably one of the few Javerts to actually sing through both the Fantine's Arrest and the Runaway Cart parts the way they were meant to be sung. The other one is Roger Allam. They both perfectly nail the rhythm of these songs and convey the tune well, while nearly everyone else tends to sacrifice an aspect or two, resulting in them being either talked / shouted through, or sung almost entirely without emotion. It pains me a lot to know that there are no high quality recordings featuring either Terrence Mann or Roger Allam performing Fantine's Arrest and the Runaway Cart in existence. That would've been such a pleasure to listen to, alongside the traditional, dark and gritty orchestrations.
So Mann is left-handed? Cool. I'm not thrilled with his singing voice, but I like how his Javert has his own little mannerisms, like "I am from the GUTTER, TOO!" and the "bring it" gesture when Valjean is threatening him with the chair leg and how he keeps his hand up there as if to protect his chin (as if he's really had some combat training). You don't see that kind of thing from many Javerts.
This was 18 yrs after Terrance Man played the original Javert. He was amazing and so was his singing then. Very good for 15 years past his peak performance. This was before iphones & videos of his original performance are sparse. He had received a standing ovation and deservedly so. I wish you could have been there. Have a blessed day.
Who is playing fantine? She's fabulous! And it's a shame Andrew was only an understudy for this role! He's awesome! Good thing he's principle Javert on tour
did terrance mann have a stroke or is he drunk, he seems to look really unsteady and he comes in late with some of the timings. he sounded fine in 1987 and i don't believe it's his age because he is only 52 there and that isnt old in terms of people who have played javert so i dont know, he's probably drunk

I have so much love for Andrew Varela. I adored his Javert, and his Valjean is also totally amazing.
He’s a great actor
He is probably my favorite Javert of all times.
OMG I loved the woman who played Fantine. She had an amazing voice!!
This is my favorite version and the first one I saw live.
Original is the best..terrence mann give me chills..whoaa!..the best javert..ever
It's Jayne Paterson, the final actress to play Fantine on Broadway in the original production.
She's amazing!!!

DustinJohns Andrew Varela and I have been friends since November of 2009 and I got to see him play Javert in Les Mis 14 times!
@Xalkne I got it from someone else. But how he manages... I swear I'll never know..

I thought he was AWFUL. Then again, I was spoiled by having Peter Samuels as my first Javert.
Norm Lewis plays the best javert (:
