    you can see how nezet-seguin loves music, he does not perform by brain, he performs by heart and i love that

    This is absolutely fantastic, best interpretation I have ever heard! When Sir Simon leaves the Principal Conductor position, keep Nézet-Séguin in mind for the new principal conductor, he is absolutely amazing! But please do keep Sir Simon for a long time to come!

    @SpottyDorsord: Exactly, I can confirm that the orchestra (at least very many of them) loved his conducting and also the work in the rehearsals. They were glad that his debut was so succesful :-). And I support your comment that people should watch the entire concert to get an idea of the big palette of expressions and colours HE could get from the orchestra (watch i.e. also the Messiaen piece). Why do youtube viewers have to criticize in a so arrogant way? Enjoy the good music!

    @GregHales of course of course, a mix between brain and heart is essential!
    My point is that i see soooo many performances that contains a lack of feelings ( not in the berlin phil ofc ) on an amateur level. i just love to see some true feelings!! balance is as you say extremely important, no balance, weird music and less focus on feelings. :-)

    I'm sad to see that nowaday youtube comments are about clothing and gesture, never mind the actual beauty of the music or the length of the standing ovation. In the words of Patrick Stearns, "The orchestra had played not just well, but interestingly, with a spontaneity that sometimes teetered on the edge of chaos in ways that suited the music and were encouraged by the guest conductor."

    @PDQGorby As someone how has studied you should know that the most of the work for a conductor awaits in the rehearsal. An orchestra like the BerlinPhil doesnt need a conductor who shows the 1 and 3 of a bar...

    I still think it might make sense for the orchestra to have its own DVD/CD label. So if DG or Euroarts does not want to do something the orchestra can still do it anyway. This would be good on DVD or the Abbado one done early today be even better for CD & DVD issue. LSO and Congertgebouw have run their own labels very well. The BPO should use its own label to supplement EMI, DG, etc.

  • @calebyoungconductor
    @calebyoungconductor 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a very different style of conducting then the BPO is used to seeing!

    @noirvalentin indeed he conducts cruel, and looks cruel, but much more important is, that his interpretation is good, and that he has to be qualities if the berliner invite him..

  • @greghales1596
    @greghales1596 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    This one is good, the one Abbado did today with Berlin was even better and perhaps the best I've heard since James Levine recorded with Berlin in the early 90's on DG.

    @PDQGorby Just watch and HEAR the entire concert at the dig. concert hall. Not amateurish AT ALL. Watch the parts with soft piano colours and also the technically "virtuoso" parts. I'd be surprised if you also see "noise" there. And you won't HEAR "noise" during the entire program.

  • @atomicmrpelly

    Quite right! One does not get up in front of one of the world's greatest orchestras in the capital city of their home country and not even put on a shirt!

  • @JosephGlaser

    @TFreckle I think the thin sound from the brass may be due to his interpretation. Especially at the end, it makes it sound more fake and sarcastic. Certainly and interesting effect

    @atomicmrpelly and Abbado, in my mind, is almost all I admire of the "Abbado generation;" a rubric inadequate for Carlos Kleiber.

  • @greghales1596
    @greghales1596 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @curlyman217 next a conductor will walking in with a T-shirt and shorts. Karajan's dress was fine...what he wore, though I think part of that might have been do to his health, but it still looked very professional.

  • @TFreckle
    @TFreckle 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TFreckle What I'm saying is not to be understood as "absolute truths" but as my personal oppinion. I like this movement with a more volumptuous sound.

  • @SpottyDorsord
    @SpottyDorsord 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @atomicmrpelly I am not exaggerating my opinion of him - I believe what I wrote. Obviously you disagree with what I wrote and you think my appraisal is excessively complimentary. I don't think this music is adolescent either. It's not the Mass in B Minor, but it's also not Rach 3. His interpretation and the commitment of the playing can't really be fairly discredited by the minor faults in ensemble during a live performance, especially based on a three minute clip...

  • @SchwarzeDose21
    @SchwarzeDose21 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @curlyman217 I am embarrassed how superficial many commentators are. The conductor has to be creative, has to communicate his idea of the music and shall radiate his emotions. Here the conductor is very young and his explosiveness is shown by his clothing as well. Why should every conductor be conservative and introverted? Watch some older conductors: Maybe they have a wealth of experience but you hope that they dont fall asleep while conducting... Please dont be that superficial!!

  • @Denomoses
    @Denomoses 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    okay i get that he should be in concert dress but other than that what is the problem with his conducting exactly? His interpretation of Berlioz is quite impressive if you ask me and he looks to be extremely passionate about his music.

  • @cysotbone621
    @cysotbone621 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JC5268 Well you're talking about one the best bass trombonists in the world, and this piece calls for exactly that kind of sound. I've heard even more from the bass in this movement, and when you're playing loud pedals you can't exactly expect some pure sound.

  • @MarkHatlestad
    @MarkHatlestad 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @curlyman217 I think he's trying to show that "classical" music doesn't have to be all about dressing up fancy and making yourself look sophisticated. Sure, it may have been a bit too casual, but at least it's an attempt to spread this great music to a wider audience.

    That class being upper class! Surely it's much better he wears something comfortable that he can conduct well in as opposed to some weird penguin suit. It isolates more people than you think that orchestras still dress like Victorians. I wouldn't say he was dressed down anyway!

    • @AlexEwan1
      @AlexEwan1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The conductor is dressed down by classical music world standards. I think it is a good compromise as I find as a violinist the tux is a hindrance and I would play with more freedom were I not so trussed up. Then again I find it adds to performing experience, makes it feel more authentic.

  • @atomicmrpelly
    @atomicmrpelly 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SpottyDorsord Bit of an over-reaction if you ask me. He's quite energetic but he doesn't have the grace of the Abbado generation, he makes this sort of adolescent music sound very lively (although a little rocky ensemble wise if I'm honest; this is the Berlin Phil, the tiniest discrepancy is a big deal!) but I think you are exaggerating slightly!

  • @DevynPope

    I'm sorry, but talk about OVERCONDUCTING! Jeez, I like the fact that he's into the music, but wow......To me it looks like he's a guest audience member who won a bid to conduct TO the music of Berlioz by the Berlin Phil.

    It shouldn't matter what the conductor wears, but as a musician, I'm a little resentful if I have to do aerobic exercise for two hours in white tie (wool coat, heavy starched shit, collar, tie, vest, undershirt!) while my boss shows up in whatever.

    It should be obvious that I don't agree that they play as if he wasn't there. Did you think that I thought they loved him while also thinking that they played as if he wasn't there?
    I don't accept the premise of your question.
    Don't get too supercilious by insinuating your rarified appreciation for Kleiber. He was a genius, but it doesn't take a genius to know that. He's been a recherché poster boy for pretentious poseurs in the mainstream for too long. You're no arbiter of the Kleiber scale.

  • @greghales1596
    @greghales1596 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TNEFMUB You must have balance...brain and heart...Karajan had the perfect balance. Bernstein did all heart and often lost imporant aspects of the music and had sloppy concerts. Karajan and Szell had the right balance, which often seems to be lacking today.

  • @1AdrianR
    @1AdrianR 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    The orchestra members are dressed more respectably than the conductor. No hindrance towards the music however.

  • @ginsuchop100
    @ginsuchop100 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm all for more casual clothing in concerts for both performers and patrons, but there should still be coordination of attire between orchestra and conductor. For example, in this case he should've just put on a black buttoned shirt. Or if he wants to stick with the black tshirt, the orchestra should wear dark shirts instead of white shirts. Otherwise the whole presentation just looks awkward and the conductor ends up looking amateurish.

  • @noirvalentin
    @noirvalentin 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    There´s something wrong about this conductor. Looks like me "conducting" in my living room. This is terribly awful. Berlin Phil, why did you invite him? On this one I have to say it seems you made a mistake.
