David, do you remember before the electric plane craze...The guys that would bring their nitro engine planes to the field, they wouldn't half idle or half run...Not everyone in this hobby is a engine tune doctor...These are meant for those types of folks...Mainly the beginner...Ran good enough for a trainer plane...

An engine that cannot be leaned out properly in the low end potentially resulting in a flameout on a pass around does not seem to be a very 'beginner' friendly engine. Quite the opposite in fact. I recall it taking me 5-6 years to learn how to tune engines. That is the problem nowadays. No one wants to INVEST in learning. These young folks are only interested in a 'quick fix' and instant gratification. There is something to be said for actual learning that is missing today. That was MY point. If a person wants to fly glow airplanes, there are many things that MUST be learned in the process. Engine tuning being one of them. I think this particular engine design was an attempt at making things easier, but in reality I don't believe it did.

I agree 100% with you on the learning curve of nitro engines. Some folks are just not capable or just too excited to get in the air. It always baffled me, I could have an engine running perfectly at home, get to the flying field and it would act up. I can see why people get so frustrated with nitro engines. It just takes time and patients to become acquainted with them. Makes me think of the New Weed Wackers and Blowers, they come set from the factory to EPA standards. They always seem to be set way to rich and transition poorly. But, they do run, but not great. I'm like you, I like to have a good idle and good transition, oh and a screamer at WOT.

Yes, it did run quite well. It has a ton of compression. My starter had a hard time with it. Of course maybe my starter battery is getting old....
