- In today’s video, we discuss everything Number Plates and the rules surrounding them here in the UK. From your bog standard plates, shortened plates all the way to your custom 3D/4D plates, we have got you covered with everything you need to know.
Number plate standards are set by DVLA not the Police however it is the Police that have to enforce them.
The new BSAU 145e standard replaces the outgoing 145d and are mandatory from 1st September 2021. After this date only 145e standard number plates can be purchased but 145d can still be used on your car if you already have them. 145e does change some things you can have and hopefully the video explains this for you.
The information in this video is correct as of 10th April 2021.
Not covered in the video is numberplate character typeface/style and size. This is because there is only one typeface and size allowed. The characters have to conform to this otherwise they won’t meet either 145d or 145e. For instance you cannot have italic or German style writing.

Perhaps you were lucky finding Adam and he and his superiors were enlightened to authorise his involvement, but it was acting on your own initiative to suggest it the first place that sets you apart. I'm no boy racer but a 63 year-old who is young at heart (even if the rest of my body is knackered) and it is heart-warming that you prove that not all lads your age are reckless and an accident waiting to happen. If I were to have a grand-daughter I would be reassured were you to be her boyfriend and I hope that her parents share the same opinion. You should approach some lubricants/tyre/performance brakes/car polish companies marketing departments and point out that they are missing out on a growing channel and the opportunity to get their products and brands worthwhile exposure. Top Gear's Chris Harris started with his own channel - you could and should be his successor!

It's a shame, all the police get branded a certain type but I've had nothing but good experiences, even the one time I got arrested 🤣

@@lukepeggram7023 ive been pulled loads of times over the years but i think what helps is if we are polite and dont have any bad attitude because if we do its deffo a ticket.
i was pulled one day for over taking an unmarked police car enthusiastically should we say. got a bollocking but a warning mainly because i wasnt an idiot towards him .

Isn't it a shame we are debating about fair police? They should all be fair and reasonable like Owen, it should be a minimum expectation to be honest. It's a job with a huge amount of responsibility and a prominent role in our communities, they shouldn't be recruiting any old numpties with varying degrees of personality disorders but unfortunately they often do.
People often criticise the police for lack of engagement with the public, but hopefully that is put to bed with these videos. I think this is some of the finest public engagement I've seen, honestly in the whole UK. Credit to Owen and yourself. Informative, to the point, and just right on the level of seriousness. Rules are complicated, these videos make them uncomplicated. Keep 'em coming!
The police isn't doing anything. If they were it would be on a police channel. He's doing it individually which proves people right even more than before

I loathe the Met Police. Really can't stand them. They continually fail to impress me both privately and professionally and are a dishevelled and undisciplined rabble.
But the Traffic Police get a pass in my book, because I have never had them be rude, sarcastic or arrogant to me. Usually they advise and often help you do the right thing. Never had a ticket in 30 years of motoring, even when caught bang to rights on one occasion. Unlike so many of the arrogant bullies and liars I find on response teams or the TSG Einsatzgruppen.

Thanks for the very helpful video! It’s just a shame that I got stopped for illegal plates when, after seeing this video and a bit of research they are actually legal under the 145D laws. Luckily I only got a warning and am now running plates that follow both ‘D’ and ‘E’ laws by complete flook as this was before the transition period. No ones perfect, it’s one of these things! Loving the policing content and would love to see Owen working on the car.

What about thickness of 4d plates and legality? You can get 3mm, 5mm and i've seen some places do up to 7mm in thickness!

nice one. great update. Just about to buy some new plates on one of our cars as the old ones are delaminating. Was going to get pressed metal plates are they look nicer, but need to find a seller that does make some that are 145e compliant, so refelective/etc. Didnt know that the dvla could take the plates off you, wow. And yes i remember the Q plates, often used for imports in the old days.

Great very informative, now can some one do some thing about car manufacturers making indicators brake lights rear lights and side lights back to doing what they should do clearly as opposed to being mixed up style/fashion statements, and make the clear and seperate

What defines “removable” characters when it comes to 3D / 4D plates? If the characters are not allowed to be removed does that not mean they should be an integral part of the plate?
I’ve heard some people who have had registration characters come off during pressure washing a car as they are just stuck on.
Perfect that was needed was confusing everyone saying this has cleared it up my legal short 6 digit plate that is 3d gel with postcode and bsu d is legal 👌👌

Great video, very informative! Owen said from the 1st September, 3D and 4D lettering will still be legal until the DVLA say otherwise. Are there any plans for them to change that?
Another great video. Just doing some research about this. How come the British Numberplate Manufacturers Association is saying that 3D plates are no longer allowed. This is in their info about 145e.

Great informative video guys. I have a quick question. I have a 3D plate with carbon lettering and the company that supplied them had just told me that because i purchased these plates previously i will be allowed to continue to use them after September 2021. Can you please confirm if this is correct?
My registration does not show the name of the manufacturer at the bottom but it shows NPS BS 145d, it means that it is illegal because there is no manufacturer's name?

Hi George / Owen 😃 very useful information . thanks for clarifying the legality of modified number plates , though I do have a couple of questions for Owen please.
In addition to the gel plates I quite often Spot cars that have retro fitted old style pressed steel number plates ,like ones found on classic cars (black on the back not yellow), is this aloud? .
also another example let’s say a late 80’s early 90s car with a flags or emblems or a printed borders -fitted before any legislation changed , as these were applied years ago before the law changed . Can these plates be left on or do they need to be replaced?

Amazing!. I got pulled for my plates (not just the 4d, but also letter spacing and tint) and he told me all three were illegal. Time to buy some more 4Ds with the correct spacing and no tint!

I thought Q-Plates were used when the DVLA can’t prove the year of a vehicle.
For example, something purchased in 2004, registered in 2012 but no paperwork to support it’s an 04 would be a Q. Or a kit car that has no donor car with no registered year.
Interesting that the DVLA are issuing Q plates as like a “punishment”.. would be interested to see if this has actually happened.

Can you confirm that coloured backing letters are acceptable under BSAU145d and remain so after 1st September? It is the new BSAU145e standard that does away with coloured backing letters?

I have a short plate on the rear of my car, both 3D gel plates bought from “Delta Plates”
The full size front plates contain the 145 number however on the rear there is no company marking and no BS etc number on the short plate.
Any idea whether the rear shortened plate has to include the markings?

A lot of people are saying the old plates will be banned, as you said, you can still use them, what people don't know is if an item is banned then the government are bound by law to pay compensation, and they don't like doing that if they can help it.

What if you have current plates with the d marking and they have colour backing, will these become illegal, or remain legal as they predate the change in regulations?
They will remain legal but if you need anymore you're out of luck.

What about using black screws to separate letters but keeping the correct spacing?
A couple of points. Firstly, you mentioned that having the BS AU regulation reference on the plate showed that it is legal? However, that cannot be difficult to add by any "backstreet" manufacturer during the build process? Also, if I heard correctly, you mentioned in passing that there couldn't be any "logos" down the side of the plate? Does that mean that the "EU" Nationality marking (not that we can display that now) or the latest fad of a green mark for electric cars cannot be displayed on the "E" model plates? Thanks.
