Live wire, neutral & ground (earth wire) - Domestic circuits (part 1) | Physics | Khan Academy

  • The live wire of domestic circuits is usually red and is at high voltage. The neutral wire is black and has voltage close to that of the ground. The potential difference between these two wires in India is about 220 V. The earth or ground wire provides safety against faults and current leaks. Earth pin is longer to ensure earth connection happens first while connecting and last while disconnecting any devices.

    I thought I hated physics but honestly I guess I just hate how they teach this in school and how we have to just "memorize" the answers only. Your video was so good and well made. Honestly helped me out big time, not just academically but to finally relate physics with daily life. Physics is so important, it sucks the way its taught, I never had this much fun studying physics ever. Thanks you so much! Keep doing it, you'll be helping so many people in the future!

    I'm 50, and I finally understand this better now. I had a misconception about AC and the neutral wire. I think many of us do after learning DC circuits. You are a very good teacher. Ty.

  • @raymondgarafano8604
    @raymondgarafano8604 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Actually the green earthing wire in plug socket would go back to the panel and connect on
    the neutral bus if main panel has its main disconnect there as well. or if it is a sub-panel,
    neutral and grounds will not and MUST NOT connect. this way if a fault occurs, current
    flows on the green or bare wire back to the ground or neutral bus and trips the breaker/s.
    hooking neutrals and grounds together in a sub-panel can make many metal parts
    electrically live and ppl not suspecting could get a bad to severe or fatal shock which
    would be 'electrocuted'
