LT1 Cam Swap Guide (2017 Camaro SS 1LE) Ep. 1 - Engine Teardown

  • TH-cam.....What's upppp..... In this series I swap the cam in a 2017 Camaro SS 1LE, swapping out the stocker with a Texas Speed's Stage 2 cam package. This was my first new gen LT1 swap, but I did it with the eng in car, no dropping the oil pan and without removing the front bumper inside a regular garage with mostly everyday auto tools. I had to figure out a few things along the way but it all went pretty well and only took me about 2-3 days with trying to film. Hope you find it helpful and it gives a few of you the confidence to try it themselves. If you feel the need to leave a thumbs down. Let me know why so I can improve. Respectfully please. What I gotta do for this on a 2014+ vette lol I’m sure it’s the Same minus clearing out the bay but I’d still be more confident if I could watch it on my car! I do appreciate this video though, can’t find much information on how to do this stuff. Is there like a manual or website that shows how to do the complete engine tear down and reassembly that shows torque specs and all the seals/gaskets and what lube needs to be used and where? And what not to do? Great video man

    • @GetItAtWiLL
      @GetItAtWiLL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      C7 STEEN I used this for torque specs paceperformance.com/files/pdf/lt1-4-torque-specs.pdf . I generally used my knowledge of LS swaps to get the general stuff. The fuel part is the only real difference and the phaser, but the swap itself is pretty cake man. Like you said the difference in engine bays will be the difference I’d imagine you’d just remove the front clip on a vette and that’d get you the room you need to operate and move the radiator etc but I’m not sure.

      Chase Brasi you get the two screws at the bottom of each corner. The passenger side is near the lil drain plug screw. These two screw in from front to back unlike all the others that were back to front. And the drivers side is pretty much in the same location. Those were the last two screws holding the shroud together that was stopping me until I finically discovered them

      Kenneth Harrison I think I took the fans out attached to the radiator as one I’ll have to go rewatch the video to remember. I may be incorrect. But I don’t remember the fans giving me much trouble whatever method I used. The condenser and radiator shroud gave me the most trouble.

    • @GetItAtWiLL
      @GetItAtWiLL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Lauer i stuck a screwdriver in one of the openings on the balancer to try and hold it because it was still rotating a bit even in 6th. I’ll be completely honest. I was worried too like I could not seem to get it and I tried the impact and it didn’t work at first. I then wedged the balancer and tried a breaker bar with a pipe on it for extra leverage but i still felt like I did absolutely nothing. I was like ok I’ll try this impact again and it came right off. And it’s the cheaper harbor freight electric impact. I’d just keep trying that. Maybe throw some heat on it with a torch and keep trying it should come eventually. I’d imagine your impact is way better than the harbor freight one I used.

      I don’t take them out in a certain order. Doesn’t matter when removing. I do like to loosen them all first before completely removing but it doesn’t matter. Hello. I have watched your two videos a couple of times now. Thanks for doing this for people to follow that has never worked on the LT1 before. We have everything tore down but for some reason can not get the balancer bolt to break loose. My impact and compressor must not have enough power. I have a 2016 1SS with a manual transmission. Any thoughts or ideas?

    • @GetItAtWiLL
      @GetItAtWiLL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chad Ennis yea the can be a b***h sometimes. I’d try a big cheater bar. I used a breaker bar and they took the pipe from the floor jack and put on the end of that to get as much leverage as possible. You can try to heat the balancer some but I don’t believe it does much since the threads are actually in the crank. Get as long a breaker as you can find or make and try that. If it doesn’t seem to be working switch back and forth between that and the impact sometimes one may loosen it just enough for the other to work.

      @@GetItAtWiLL right. I have a very long breaker bar I bought last year. I am also hearing apply heat. I have everything disconnected but can not get the radiator out. The bottom corners of the radiator our to wide with the round rubber cushions on them to fit between the frame to slide up and out.

    • @GetItAtWiLL

      Chad Ennis did you get the bottom corner bolts out of the shroud connecting it to the radiator. I had the same issue but there is a bolt at the very bottom on each outer side of the radiator that the should uses to bolt to the radiator. I had to get under the car and kindve look from the front outer sides of the radiator to find them

      Chad Ennis I’m looking through the pictures now. It looks like you have everything disconnected from what I can see. If that’s the case you’re just going to have to work the angles and do some wiggling and it should come out

    • @GetItAtWiLL
      @GetItAtWiLL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThatAlphaCamaro besides normal hand tools and stuff like torque wrenches that should be it. We got this kit from Texas Speed and their kits come with everything cam wise. Only extra we had to order was the DoD delete kit and the fuel lash cap and I’m pretty sure the cam package page references this in additional things you need. I put the website links in the description

      Nice , last question, what would I need other thing that? Like headers exhaust etc.

    • @GetItAtWiLL
      @GetItAtWiLL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThatAlphaCamaro you don’t “need” anything else persay but to take full advantage of the power gains you’ll want headers and a nice flowing exhaust. Heads and intake would be nice as well to help get as much air in the cylinders as possible for combustion. But he ran this car with the cam on stock manifolds and cats for a few months. With only a cold air intake and MBRP axle backs. Still noticeable gains.

      On 3 It’ll depend on your cam but in most cases a 7.850” should be fine (on a new gen LT1 that is, at least in the camaros. Now if you messing with different rockers and or heads. Things like that then I’d def check. The pushrod length checker is pretty cheap. But if you are just doing a cam I think you’ll be fine HOWEVER lol I’m not saying this is correct. You’ll def want to upgrade to hardened pushrods regardless if you’re doing cam and springs.
