1000 kms is approx 620 miles. So it takes 161 Laps and just over 6 hours + safety car delays. Cars have 2 Drivers and a schedule of minimum laps to drive.
It became a race in the 1960's. It is also part of the town of Bathurst. a public road. Anyone can drive on it, any day of the week. There are homes around the track, buses use the road. It wasn’t designed as a track it was actually designed as a scenic drive route that then got turned into a race track it is a public road when it’s not being used for races
2 drivers per car, 160+ laps, in fireproof suits hot as hell inside. G forces, tight belts and a freaking hard brake pedal. Easy on a game in a comfy chair with AC
They do have cooling systems in place, in the helmets and a cooling vest/undershirt with tubing through it to run air or water to help regulate the drivers body temperature, along with vents on the cars designed to bring in fresh air.
2024 Bathurst 1000 was last weekend. and there were NO major accidents.. Aussies thought it was boring. The historical rivalry between HOLDEN and FORD is a part of Australian legend. Have a look at Daryl Walltrip totally losing it going for a ride. Mark Larkham is a race driver turned commentary after retirement. he knows what he's talking about. It's a public road and this is the only time the speed limit is changed... normally it's 60km per hour.

One thing not mentioned in this video is the elevation of the track. From the lowest point of the track to the highest point is around 580ft or 180 metres. At times there is a 1 in 6 inclination gradient All in 6.2 km or 4 miles.

lol this is actually a normal road outside of the races which you can drive. let me tell you it is just as dangerous even slightly sppeding i know this because i was doing the speed limit and nearly rolled my car in the 90s. So for those who want to just take a normal drive around one of the greatest race tracks in the world you can
You are absolutely right about how difficult a course it is. I have tried it on a really decent sim setup and it is insanely taxing just to stay on the track.
It's a 6 hour race...not sure of how many laps lol. someone here will tell ya. But it's also a 2 man team....they change drivers when needed. all Australia stop to watch this race....I remember once or twice they had kangaroos hopping along the side of the raceway on the road!! lol...Yep only in Australia. The grate is at the lowest point so water runs into it but it's also the point where the car go from down hill to up, putting a lott of downward pressure on the steering and suspension. And you are coming around the corner.
And trying to drive on the dirt there, you are far more likely to not just lose time but have an crash.. No one really wants to try that "short cut".. Few drivers have been lucky enough to get through there and rejoin the field - most find out how many somersaults they can do :)
Panoramic drive created by the then mayor. Now the best race track in the world! Even F1 cars can’t do it. The FIA says “no way”. GT3’S do it but there’s a limit.
Conrod Straight @ 300kmh = 186.4mph , brake hard, then go thru Caltex Chase AFAIK it was named Conrod Straight because the car engines would throw a conrod at the high rpm when flat out down the straight. Now, imagine a V8 5.8lt 351 cu in doing 10,000 rpm down that straight in 1970s . They did, and some engines became scrap. Caltex Chase was added to Conrod Straight to slow the cars a bit, as a few became almost airborne going over that slight hump (1980s?), was 163 laps IIRC. And then the race cars became even faster ......... Was Armstrong 500 (miles) in 1960s, then Bathurst 500 (miles), changed name to Bathurst 1000 (kms) when the country changed to metric distances. You do as many laps as it takes on current track distance until the overall target distance of 1000kms is reached, currently 161 laps. A number of well known international drivers have raced here. Aussies know the >correct< direction (anti-clockwise) to drive this 2-way public road. Feels really wrong when you go the other direction. The posted speed limit is 60kmh or 38mph, and it is actively policed !!
so it's 161 laps to do this and it stretches over 6.213 kilometres (approximately 3.861 miles) in length. Nestled within the circuit precinct are 32 residential properties, making it a unique and somewhat unconventional location for motorsport events. This coexistence of homes and racing adds a distinct character to the track! so that is 161 times 3.861 miles which is 621.621 miles
I laughed at " the man who built this track is evil", it was built as a work program during the depression, the proposal was that a scenic drive could stimulate tourism. The reality was they always wanted a race track but would never get funding for it, so once they had the road they decided to have some races. Which was the evil plan from the very beginning.
