    Even as an experienced competition shooter , I’ll watch solid fundamental vids like this to refresh and check I’m not getting complacent in my gun handling. One thing I do, which is really important for beginner shooters prepping for classes or matches , is to apply range rules to my dryfire -I train in the basement just like there’s a 180 etc , stay in my workspace , draw , clear and load snap caps like it’s all live . Lazy dryfire can lead to lazy live fire .

That being said great advice & hell off a video Baer solution's. I love learning from those with more knowledge and experience then me & sharing with others!!!! #EachOneTeachOne 💯🍻

    Thanks for the video. I’m not very experienced. Less than 600 rds on 9mm and .45 firearms at ranges. Ive always loved the engineering and mechanics behind them though. Its amazing to me you can repeatedly cause an explosion with a tool in your hand and it can cycle through a process repetitively without malfunction, by design anyway. Cheers

    I've been shooting for many years and appreciate this video. No matter how long you've been doing something it's nice to get back to fundamentals. If you're set in your ways its easy to run through your procedure while watching this video and pinpoint where you might be being complacent. What i noticed a week or so ago and voiced to somebody was that i've been clearing firearms so long and do it the same way every time that even if i'm sitting down and don't get up to go elsewhere and come back... i still second guess myself and check clear again before handling the firearm. Some people get lazy... laziness leads to accidents.

    As an instructor, if someone feels like they are holding up the class, that person needs to know that they paid their money and trusting me to make them better first. So if im hosting a class someone suck their teeth or make a gesture against someone that needs more time they should be awarded it. And the person sucking their teeth or have an issue with someone because they feel like that person is holding up the class, that person can leave without a refund. Everybody isnt a fake soldier like most these bozos who never served a military nothing. Thinking because they know one step more than another they have the grounds to clown somebody who’s having trouble getting it. Thats the only thing i hate about the 2A community. Everybody think they some black ops operator after they took a few classes. In my class i always tell people we may be longer than the time set, just to set aside time for the people who nerves get the best of them. Smh…

    Just happened to me at a range this weekend. A guy was teaching his girl. They were just next to my lane. He stood back (2 yrds behind her) and left her take some shots when all of a sudden their pistol jammed. She started looking at the pistol and see what was wrong with it (finger still on trigger) and pointed sideways left and right flipping the gun back and fort. A few burger flips later the guy noticed she was doing it, immediately told her not to do what she did. I decided to leave and just told the RSO to keep an eye on their lane and explained what happened. That scared me a little bit. Practicing at home about safety should be first in mind. Somebody in adjacent lanes could have been shot. This video is perfect for new shooters to watch and practice at home before heading to the range.

    This might not work for everyone but as far as gripping the pistol goes, I think a lot of people focus too much on death gripping the gun, or how one hand grips versus the other hand, or whatever. It's this simple, grip your gun as comfortably as you can as high up on the pistol as possible. Try shooting it, if it moves in your hands and you have to readjust, evenly squeeze a bit tighter, don't think about what hand is doing what, just squeeze. When you can control the gun you're good. After that focus more on tracking your sights. If they move more than you want, again squeeze a bit more. The trick with this is you shouldn't be THINKING about your grip while shooting, you should be focusing on the scenario and shooting accurately and with speed. You need to allow the gun to become a part of you. You don't think about a bunch of technique while throwing a ball. After practice your muscles in your arms and hands will adjust. You'll get quicker and better, but to get really good you need to get into the flow state. After shooting my best matches I hardly realized I was shooting! I'd just flow through the stages and make my hits! I'm saying this because I see so many newer shooters focusing on things like grip and how this hand does this and this hand does that and my feet were here and my hands were there when you will be a better shooter if you can quickly track your sights and move smoothly during reloads. I don't know this is getting long winded but hopefully people get the point.

    At 25:47 there's 3 tendons that make up the anatomical "Snuff box" of the hand. The bottom one is the tendon of your Extensor Pollicis Brevis and the top one is your Extensor Pollicis Longus. There is a third one directly underneath the bottom one called the Abductor Pollicis Longus. Pollicis means thumb, Extensors extend your thumb, and abductors move your body part (thumb) away from the midline of the body

    At one of our club beginners shoots we had a cowboy bring a crossdraw for his single action. I explained to him on the imaginary draw that when you draw from that kind of holster, you flag everyone to the left of you because the holster was on his left hip and he was right handed. He took what I had to say genuinely. He got to shoot after everyone was off the line. I want to show this video at our next beginners class for our club.

    I’m a big firearms fan, not an expert by any means but have gotten into them hard in the past 5 years but what I’ve always hated is guntuber bravado and range theatric dudes who act and talk like everything is a civil war or a fight for your life situation when discussing literally any techniques.
    I don’t get any of that at all from this guy and it’s so refreshing. He presents all the information you could need calmly and rationally but still makes it clear as night and day the seriousness of proper gun safety. Not everyone is joining the Federation Marines to go kill space bugs, some people are looking for the fundamentals or people like me who know most of this information but can still learn. Which I did with this video. Definitely checking out the rifle video next.

Plus, I discovered that one of my pistols was shooting low and another one shooting high from the point of aim. What most new shooters don’t realize is that they can greatly increase their weapons handling skills with dryfire. All of the best USPSA shooters dry fire on a regular basis if not daily. With no ammo or snap caps it greatly improves all aspects of weapon handling draw, presentation, and reloading.

    11:11 My one point so far. The Don't swap hands, keeping the firearm in your primary hand is great. But what is better is put the firearm down or reholster. As a RSO I have seen so many people point a loaded gun at their leg or foot or another person. They go to pick up a mag they dropped or a live round they ejected by mistake, and now their focus is no longer on the firearm but what ever object they are picking up. Unfortunately many people just can't maintain Object Permeance and the hand with they firearm just starts swinging around.
    Note: For any zero. There is no shame in bracing yourself for your zero. I recommend people pulling up a chair and resting their arms/wrists on the bench. Removing as much human error as you can means you don't zero the gun to you pulling shots.

    One of the things that will get you talked to, and I see in competition and in classes, is people digging their gun into their side while holstering. It's a pet peeve of mine, and the last thing I want is a student or a competitor putting a round into their pelvic girdle. PLEASE place your holster where you can safely guide your pistol into its home, and practice finding the holster without the gun pointed inward.
    PS. Billy puts out some awesome info.

I especially liked the comment that chalk on your support hand can help you better feel your grip. No one has ever mentioned that to me before. Might have to see if I can make it to Florence next year for a class. :-)

  • @warmothgmc

    Good video on the basics. I have some difficulty because I am a left handed shooter; and, not all my pistols are fully ambidextrous. For my normal EDC, which is a Sig P365, the best I can do is move the magazine release to the right side of the frame. It just makes manipulating the slide stop/release a bit challenging. I still need to reverse the mag release on a couple other of my pistols.
    So for the purpose of load/unload drills, I can choose my FN FNX-45 Tactical, or my H&K VP9, since both of those have ambi slide releases. Oddly enough, for long guns, I shoot right handed. Anyway, continuous training and drills is a must to build that muscle memory and safety protocols. In fact, I’ll be hitting my club range this weekend.

    RSO. Marine Corps. The range is all about the person running it... If you're making things way complicated... People tend to mess it up because of nerves.. Treat, never, keep, keep applies to everything... Don't break 2 of those rules at the same time... Easy range.

    I've only been an owner for a couple months, but it's amazing to me how easy it is to learn and practice safety on your own, and how many don't. If you're new to guns, take out the ammo and "play with it" with the ammo far away. Do all of these things and pretend, while paying attention. It's so easy, but people are so lazy. This is a great video for newbs. They shouldn't get near a loaded gun until they've gone through these motions a hundred times each.

For the unloading procedure, I have had an instructor advise me that, as long as the pistol is cycling properly, I should cover the ejection port while locking back the slide. This way the ejected round can be caught in the hand. I'm sure you know about this technique, and you have a reason for not teaching it that way. Would you mind explaining why? Many thanks.

      Couple of things, you can induce a malfunction, and the ejector looks an awful lot like a firing pin to a primer. Every time you touch the gun you are training yourself, don’t get obsessed with capturing that round. When you are racking that slide do it the same every time, try to rip that fucker off with a push pull with your hand behind the ejection port, or use the blade of your hand against the optic if you have an optic. This is not wisdom from my own genius I learned this from classes from Bill Halvorsen, Kevin Williams, Clint Smith, John Hall.

    Now do it for left handed shooters. The slide open thing doesn't work for us unless your gun happens to have ambi slide releases (uncommon). And plenty of guns now don't allow index finger slide drops like they used to. Changing hands is required to lock the slide open.
    Beretta 92's and 1911 slides can be dropped by lefties using the left index finger, but not held open. Old Sigs that had the long sliding release that went down the grip behind the trigger were deal breakers for me. But that was before the idea that you should just use your off hand to release so you learn to do that racking motion better. With my M&P, the slide release is no longer workable with my index finger, so I just moved to the offhand racking to release the slide.

    • @baersolutions
      @baersolutions  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Do it with your right hand as you pull the slide back, or your index finger like other lefties.

    • @RAWDEAL064
      @RAWDEAL064 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Navy just went to M18s and they have that tiny little slide lock. My lefties use right hand to curl around the front of the pistol grip, apply pressure to the slide lock, and rack with left. It's a little awkward but once you get it down, it's easy and fast enough. Only took my (a right hander) about 5-10min of fuckin with it to get it down

    • @Osprey1994
      @Osprey1994 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm right handed, and I managed to lock my Glock slide back on the second try using my right pinky. Obviously, it would be better just get an ambi pistol, but I guess some people are stubborn and they stick with pistols not made for lefthanded shooters.
      PS. Managed to do it with my right thumb as well, I have to rotate the gun in my left, pull the slide back and sweep up with my thumb. Awkward for me as a righty, but doable. I'd definitely prefer something ambi if I were a left handed shooter.

    Any advice for a new shooter that does not own a holster. In your range on the video would I use one of those barrels as a table to unload the gun from my case?

      You should also buy a holster.
      Trex Arms, T1C, Werkz, Tenicor, QVO Tactical. All great companies who provide plenty of free information, have great CS, and make great products.

      I’m him. The gun was clear. Also, sometimes for the best visual angles, and for education, we have to be in the hot zone so the viewer can understand. Think of all the movies where the actor is literally firing blanks towards camera. Same-same.

I want training to avoid those stupid mistakes in the first place. I have a pretty solid grasp on the basics safety stuff and how to operate my firearms.

    12:30 you should start wearing body cams or have cameras set up for your classes after a situation like that not just for safety but for insurance and liability reasons. You would have been able to show her look ma’am your finger was on the trigger and you let the slide go home right here and that’s why the round went off. However I’m a big proponent on crawl, walk, run, she shouldn’t have been shooting already if she can’t even manipulate a firearm through the basics. I’ve seen it in every CCW and beginner course I’ve taken. Some people can’t even rack a slide but they are already shooting on a range and I don’t think that makes any bit of sense in my eyes but that’s just me. That’s like putting a new driver who has never driven before behind a race car.

      Are you having a difficult time actuating the magazine button with your dominant hand? You might want to try the method that Austin Texas Police Department teaches in which you actuate the magazine release with the thumb of your support hand before you reach for your magazine. Another way to proceed is to reverse the mag release (If your pistol has an ambidextrous release) and use your trigger finger to release the magazine.

    Most of my work is with brand new shooters. Nobody walks in knowing anything other than what they see in movies and tv. Women are better students than men.
    If somebody signs up for an advanced class, it takes about 2 minutes to determine if they belong there or not. In that case, they get a refund and advised to take a basic class.

    well never pick up anything from the ground with gun out why not holster the firearm to prevent that and no negligent discharges will happen. Also if you blade your body when doing the loads reloads the firearm will be pointed down range in safe direction. Now unless they have had tactical training and repeatedly practiced the technique they maybe unsafe. I have LEO and Military people consistently and I have had to repeatedly correct them.

    I got DQ'd once and only once in a 3-gun match while shooting and moving around the corner of a shoot house. I shot a target as I was advancing forward around the corner, I noticed I didn't make very good hits and attempted to take a step back and turned and shot, I BARELY broke the 180, from the video I was probably half a degree past. The range officer was actually a good shooting buddy but he still held to the rules and gave me the DQ! WORST shooting experience of my life! I was so embarrassed!
    I'm a pretty experienced shooter but it's pretty easy to mess up with things like this, especially while moving around. In my mind I was well clear of the 180 but I really wasn't. I should mention, it was still 100% safe and I didn't endanger anyone. That's because the stage was well designed but in another situation that might not be true. If you want to watch I've got the video somewhere on my TH-cam channel.
