    Hey I know this video is 4 years old but as someone who is new to Thai and learning from a book (having spent 5 years or so studying 日本語) I'm finding your work a great supplement for pronunciation. I've been pronouncing เอ wrong for example, like the Japanese え but it's a different sound. Your video on tones helped clear a lot up too. Much appreciated!

    Dave, thank you so much for this video!!! I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I noticed that some of the vowel sounds are similar to vowels in Portuguese. I'm trying to learn Thai but I couldn't find some good videos on TH-cam, and finally I came across this masterpiece! Thank you so much!!!!!!

    After living in Thailand for the past 6 yrs., I have come to the conclusion that anything that is simple and easy, Thais will make complicated and difficult. Their language is confounding.

    • @davevoetberg
      @davevoetberg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hang in there. I still find myself struggling with Thai after 9 years of being here, too.
      At the same time, I think if we had to learn English over again, we would probably have similar feelings about our own language.

    • @farshimelt
      @farshimelt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know about that. After a year in Greece, I could read and write and speak & understand well enough to have a simple conversation. Thai is far more complicated that English. Thai has more vowels than English has letters.

    David, สวัสดีปีใหม่ & thanks a lot. I miss immediate word examples though. Eg กะละมังfor ะ,
    Please bear with my sharing the ONLY method I discovered as working (to me), none of the proposed rote learning and memorising of isolated consonants nor vowels actually does produce lasting and functional results. Not for me and I don't think for anybody else either.
    Knowing the vowels inventory, I take known vocabulary, eg สวัสดี, and learn to type it out on the Thai keyboard on my cellphone. Next I force myself to actually WRITE known words. It's literally that learning by DOING kind of thing. Thoughts?

    • @davevoetberg
      @davevoetberg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there Mike,
      Thanks for sharing. Honestly, I understand that not everyone may find the way I teach to be the most helpful way for them to learn. That's fine. Being that this has worked for me, I just go about teaching it this way. But I would use whatever method of learning Thai that suits your learning style.
      I do get into writing out words later on in this series, but I find that baby steps & bite-sized pieces tend to be the way to go with foreign languages & then building from there. Thanks Mike.

    Yup, too much talking, but it's a pretty good video

    You really need to learn to be more efficient in your delivery. Three minutes into this video I still haven’t learned a thing. Too much talking, not enough action.

      5 minutes in, still waiting for some actual instruction rather than prelude

      Hi Richard,
      I'm seeking to lay a detailed foundation for those wanting to get into the ins & outs of reading Thai.
      I understand my teaching style may not be for everyone. Thanks for the suggestion.

    It took you 5 minutes to jump right in. Expect a few people would have jumped right out by then.
    Then another minutes to talk about the 1st vowel, sorry to boring for me. Bye.
