I test drove one of these 2 years ago. It was a great driving experience. What really hit me was afterwards. I got out of the Type R and into my wife's car (2018 Odyssey) and for a couple moments I thought the car was literally broken. Compared with the tight, precise Type R, the minivan (which normally feels fine, and has pretty good handling for a minivan) felt so wobbly and vague that I thought I had a flat tire or something. That feeling went away after a while, but I'll never forget how incredibly refined that Type R Civiv was.

I'm in Calgary and I have a 2022 Civic Si It may not have the power of the Type R but it is a great car to commute with. It has heated seats and heated steering wheel which is great for our cold winters! I've considered the Type R but, I would gain more power but loose in fuel economy and other areas. Plus the 60 grand price tag is hard to accept.
Tedward, I'd totally recommend some RainX on your windshield which will make the rain literally bead right off and you'll never have to use your wipers, especially on the highway. I apply it to my car once every other month, super easy and affordable to do.
Thanks for your comments regarding the E92 M3. Before getting my 2019 FK8 Type R, I was considering a 2013 M3. Connecting rod bearings aside, my wife just didn’t like the idea of buying a six year old car so I got the Type R. I’m glad how you mentioned that you often had to live in the upper RPMs with the M3. I generally don’t like to do that as I don’t like to strain the engines of the car that I drive. I work remotely but up until I worked remote my Type R was my daily driver. It does have nice torque and I love how I don’t have to shift really on the highway and I just accelerate to pass cars. Love seeing the local roads in your videos.
Glad to see that wild oval interchange in Newton is still shit! Also, I'm def running into glitches with CarPlay, too. I've discovered that Google Maps really has a tough time some days, like in some circumstances the map will just never load or my position on it will never update. Restarting the app will typically fix it, but it's annoying to do that every other drive. Waze also does weird shit. The most reliable app so far is Apple Maps :/
I have started getting onto the pike one ramp early to avoid it. getting a green light while cars coming from your left also have a green light makes no sense! and that's before you need to cross 4 lanes to get on the pike :D
Glad (not) to see that Honda CarPlay still has these issues. My 9th gen Accord head unit would constantly crash and have funky colour glitches. I also found that running Apple Maps with GMaps and Waze deleted worked best.
M3 owner here. I now drive 140 miles a day and I just couldn’t put that on my m3. But I think I’m sold on the type r for my daily driver. I need to have a fun car to drive but also want something sensible and reliable… hopefully the type arrr doesn’t disappoint
Just bought mine on Monday! What an amazing machine! I also understand the frustration of Boston driving. Went to college up around there about 20 some years ago. Take 90 and 495 on the way up to Maine every summer. Great videos though! Definitely helped with making my decision.
Loved seeing all the tech and driver assist features. And I appreciate the comment about the seats. I feel the same way about my Elantra N seats. They’re amazing but definitely not what I’d consider commuter friendly. I wonder if you’d get more hard looks if you got one of the brighter colors? I love the Championship White, but so many cars are white nowadays it might be why you’re only getting looks from those who know what it is. Just a thought.
BTW if it recommends and NOT require, emphasis on NOT REQUIRE. You can use 87 without worry, there's an Octane sensor on the car that'll detect what you put in and change the ignition timing. The only difference between 87 and 93 is how resistant they are to pre-ignition, they both have the same additives that "cleans" your engine. Just make sure you're getting gas from a reputable supplier. (Shell, ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, etc) Not all gas stations are equal, avoid unpopular if you car requires 91/93, gas breaks down and degrade over time meaning that 91 you're putting in might really be 89 if the station doesn't have an Octane sensor.
That's one thing I love about turbos... you don't need to have the engine screaming at high RPMs to merge onto freeways. Had a turbo engine and I would love how effortlessly it would pick up speed. Currently enjoying the VTEC IN MY 2022 HONDA PILOT V6 LOL :D
that black wheel white car with snow tyres looks amazing, the dirt adds to the rallyness :) edit: the low end acceleration is my favourite part about my 02 9-5 aero, I let my friend who owns a miata drive it recently and it was like polar opposite for him, it making the miatas peak power at 2.5k rpm is probably part of that, but peak torque being at 1.9k rpm and then slowly dropping off keeping the power band flat rather than linear helps a lot. Something I find interesting is that the fuel economy on the saab is almost identical to that of the type r, but range is over 500 miles because the tank is 18.5 gallons
5:45 well said! This is what made me give up the 3.7 Q50S - Wanted something with more down low TQ, so I'm not revving the living pi** out of the motor every time! VQ37 was a Great motor, but down low it was certainly sluggish.
I’m on the waiting list for a the fl5 type r, it seems like such an amazing machine. What I wanted to ask you was, for around 45k-50k there’s also your mustang gt’s performance packs and ile ss camaros. Since you’ve driven all of these, how does the type r compare to those big v8 cars around the same price? When it comes to overall fun, build quality fit/finish, and performance
Well the thing is.. I come from ss camaros, paxton supercharged s550 and my last car was a heads/cam c6z.. so obviously Those cars were way faster than this. I just kinda got tired of having issues and stuff breaking etc.. I now just want something new, reliable and super fun to drive on the street and take to my local autocross event. Those cars although fun to drive, I always felt like I couldn’t get the full experience/enjoyment out of them. You always feel like they’re going to break, spin out, you need a drag radial.. I want something that can handle and is just fun. And yes although I’ve had those cars in the past. I’m also a huge Japanese car lover.. I know there’s the gt darkhorse coming out for example, in the 50s I’m sure. So In my head I start to campare this type r to a car like that, and yes it has less power etc.. but for some reason I feel like the type r is just a way more special car than that mustang.. and Probly just funner to drive as well. But then again I haven’t driven a type r so what do I know. Would be great to hear from y’all
Hey man, I've been enjoying your videos over the past few years but I can't get over the fact that you're still doing all of this right where I live lmao
The stiff ride and horrendous road noise are deal breakers for me. Maybe if I was still in my 20's it wouldn't, but closing in on 40, there's no way I could deal with this.
I’m 39 and I don’t think it’s that bad. It’s probably queiter than my 8th gen SI. I’d own one in a heartbeat if I could get myself to spend that much on a depreciating hunk of metal
So funny to see the Newton Supercollider on here! I live a block away and have to go through it on my daily commute. It’s a living hell some days. Your comments were spot on haha
Good on ya'. You're someone with self control who enjoys driving in the real world. I was just thinking about a guy in a new Mustang who was doing about 70 in fairly thick 3 lane 30-35 mph traffic the other day. I was sooo hoping he would be seen by a cop.
I clicked on the video because I thought I recognized that area in the thumbnail. I grew up in Boston (5 miles from Fenway) but I haven’t lived there in 18 years since I left for the military. I’ve spent the last 14 years here in N.C. The picture in the thumbnail looked like it was over near Newton, MA but I am probably wrong but I definitely knew it was my home area!!
I could probably get better gas mileage if I could stay off the accelerator but it's so hard not to push this car cause it is a lot of fun to drive and my android auto has done some weird stuff also like saying I'm not connected but all of my auto from my phone is coming thru but it's minor stuff and I put about 2k miles on mine
I came from a 2018 civic to a 2022 touring. When my cruise control starts to slow that’s when I pass, and there is no more ping pong in the LKAS system which is amazing!
Ted, I've had that issue with mine as well. Couldn't pinpoint if it's bad signal, Waze bug, CarPlay bug, or the car... I've never had it living in a smaller city, but since moving to DC, the problem really got to me. Not sure if it's signal scrambling since there are way too many people.
I’ve had the same Waze issue in the past three cars (including my current FL5 Si). The solution is always the same: pull the app up on your phone then shut it down (like swiping up on an iPhone). It will reset the Waze CarPlay overlay perfectly, every time. Seems to keep it fine for anywhere from a day to a month at a time doing this.
Awesome content as per usual Tedward! So jealous of the FL5 type R! Here in the UK they are giving us like 400 per year, so they are like hens teeth! MSRP is 46k but going for 57 which is like $71k which is crazy. My question is, as a daily how much difference is there between a 2020/21 FK8 type r (if you have driven one)
Thanks for the honest, real world, no nonsense review. I've never owned a Honda product. While I've always been interested or even desired some CRXs, Civics, Accords, Preludes, and Integras / RSXs in the past, but I've never gotten around to owning one, due to one thing or another, including one real jerk of a salesperson at a local Honda dealership. I'm not a huge fan of fancy digital gauges, but that setup that you have looks pretty decent enough. I don't care for infotainment systems. I feel that if your car needs an infotainment system, you own a boring car. I'm not into the Apple ecosystem (I will NEVER own an iPhone), so I don't know if that's going to a deal breaker or not. I'm not crazy about the exterior looks of the Civic, and I haven't been for a long while - not since 2006. The more plastic / fiberglass body cladding and carbon fiber you put on a car, the uglier it gets, in my opinion. Fun and practical has been the name of the game for the past 20 or so years for me. It looks like you found a winner and when I first clicked on your video, I thought "I'll just havc a look to see what's new. Civics are just 'too Fast and too Furious' for me." Then you took your Civic on a drive and started talking about handling, fuel economy, and general livability. You definitely got my interest. I know what you mean about German traction control. Volkswagen's DSC will resist spinning wheels to the end by killing the throttle. I had written Civics off my list, but now, I'll have to take a more serious look at them. Thanks again for your video!
The scramble issue you have with Apple CarPlay happens in my FL1-even with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. It also had the same issue with Android Auto using my old Samsung Galaxy Note9, so I’m thinking it’s just poor software or hardware in the infotainments of these early model year 11th generation Civics. I’m not sure if you get it too, but sometimes there’s startup lag when booting up CarPlay/AA and other times not. As you mentioned, it’ll resolve itself sometimes instantly or after a few minutes, though.
14:15, adaptive does let you maintain speed but you need to adjust distance and change lanes before it starts slowing down. VW golf has it nailed down, it speeds me up when indicate and start turning my steering. really clever
The equation “fun for buck” is becoming very interesting in the car world these days. I own a Fiesta ST in Europe (roughly USD 25k) as a weekend toy and the car is just phenomenal… I also own a Macan GTS as a family car, which is a very good car, but fun wise not better than the nimble Fiesta (4 times the price of the latter) I can use to attack any corner I may think of. Fun wise, Civic Type R might be the sweet spot in the car world given its capabilities and price (more or less 50% cheaper than an M3/RS4 in Europe but twice of a Fiesta). Bottom line is that you do not need to spend a huge amount of money to own a really fun and capable car, although sky is the limit and you can go up in the ladder and just buy a GT3…
wow it's nice to see that youi can still get cars with a manual transmission.. i have 1 in my 2009 toyota yaris and basically it means that if the transmission ever fails, rebuilding it is easy & cheap.. in an automatic trans you usually have to ditch the car sometime after 10 years when the transmission blows.
I’m getting it as my commuter car to work specifically …just wanted something that was snappy and quick and reliable but also good to just cruise the 20 miles to my office every day …just nice knowing that you have some power under the hood when you need it 😉
Beautiful, graceful car. Love it. I also laughed when you said LA is the worst in the world. LA is like an open country road compared to King's Highway (Ontario) 401 here in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). LA ain't seen nothing yet.
u did a PHENOMENAL job. Now i'm less interested in the type r, and more interested in a couple of those cars on the lot, right before u drove out the dealership
Many of your reasons for the typeR describe exactly why driving a saab (aero model) in the days of old was so awesome but yet very underrated. Always thought Saab were the swedish Hondas …at least the 9000 and newer models
Let me help… I stepped down from 21 Fk8 last week to 23 sport touring 6spd. (I needed a less expensive payment). I love the sport touring and it’s features but it was quite a step down. Further than I expected. The fk8 is a damn weapon and chews up the miles effortlessly. I NEVER had a bad or boring drive… EVER. I unfortunately cannot find comfort in the sport touring seats tho. They hurt my back and I feel like you are sitting ON them rather than IN them which is a no go. I found an msrp deal on a Si and will be moving into it tomorrow. All the tech is nice in the touring, but if you appreciate the DRIVE and dynamics… then don’t look at touring. It’s very soft. There will be Type Rs out there that are garage queens like mine if that interests you. Sad that they will still be (for now) pushing 40k. Here’s to hoping the Si will be better!! Good luck!

My wife has a 21 Honda CRV and her infotainment also does the map scramble with Wayze, Google Maps and Apple Maps. With ours, we have to cycle through the brightness to get it clear again.
I recently got a 23 SI and I love driving it right now. I couldn’t justify the extra 20K+ for a type R and honestly it’s a little too ricey racer for me. It’s a nice looking car but I’m in my forties now so it was just too much. Ps. I’m getting 34MPG and still zipping around. The manual is just so nice. It has the right amount of power and economy. It’s roomy enough for 4 adults and looks sexy. you can only drive so fast where I live as well. So the type R while pretty fucking cool was just unnecessary. Good luck with yours. Oh and one more thing I really liked was it comes with attractive 18s on all season tires so no real reason to size up or down or change the rubber. Just another incentive.
Everyone talking about how great this car is needs to watch from 4:30 on, then watch it again. That is exhibit A on why FWD sucks. Wheelhopping front wheels are not fun, wet or not, that is not conducive to a great driving experience and you will experience that when you drop the hammer in this thing.

It has heated seats and heated steering wheel which is great for our cold winters! I've considered the Type R but, I would gain more power but loose in fuel economy and other areas. Plus the 60 grand price tag is hard to accept.
The more Type R content the better. The lip on the glove box is still there!
I figured I'd leave it until people got angry and then I'd ceremoniously remove it on camera lol
@@TedwardDrivesI just tuck mine in the glove box because I couldn’t get myself to remove it lol
@@TedwardDrives don't remove it so the car still looks fresh :)
Tedward, I'd totally recommend some RainX on your windshield which will make the rain literally bead right off and you'll never have to use your wipers, especially on the highway. I apply it to my car once every other month, super easy and affordable to do.
Moved out of Boston 5 months ago and watching you drive the pike triggers my stress....
I just got my 22 Si in Platinum White Pearl last month, watching you upgrade to the Type R makes me excited to do the same down the road also!
I daily commute here and it is literally the worst
M3 owner here. I now drive 140 miles a day and I just couldn’t put that on my m3. But I think I’m sold on the type r for my daily driver. I need to have a fun car to drive but also want something sensible and reliable… hopefully the type arrr doesn’t disappoint
You and TheTopher are my parents at this point
Just bought mine on Monday! What an amazing machine! I also understand the frustration of Boston driving. Went to college up around there about 20 some years ago. Take 90 and 495 on the way up to Maine every summer. Great videos though! Definitely helped with making my decision.
Love the videos per usual. I would be really interested in hearing your driving impressions of the new GR Corolla and comparing it to your new Type R.
I do about 1k in commute in my 10th gen type R per week. Still to this day, I smile when I get behind the wheel. The car is AMAZING!
@@mharro88 I’m jealous of your seats for sure! If there was a way to get them here I’d do it in a heartbeat.
Unless you don't want looks but still a fast car :)
Great video Tedward! Love the short fun gearing on the Type R!! Congratulations on your new car and almost 370K subs!!
Hi big fan here love your pov drives especially with the new cars ❤
Turning off navigation will solve the CarPlay glitches
HEARD YOU LOUD AND clear bro fixed my posture
That's one thing I love about turbos... you don't need to have the engine screaming at high RPMs to merge onto freeways. Had a turbo engine and I would love how effortlessly it would pick up speed. Currently enjoying the VTEC IN MY 2022 HONDA PILOT V6 LOL :D
Nice seeing those MA roads and highways once again. Civic Type R is a screamer for sure. One day I’m gonna have to learn to drive manual myself.
that black wheel white car with snow tyres looks amazing, the dirt adds to the rallyness :)
edit: the low end acceleration is my favourite part about my 02 9-5 aero, I let my friend who owns a miata drive it recently and it was like polar opposite for him, it making the miatas peak power at 2.5k rpm is probably part of that, but peak torque being at 1.9k rpm and then slowly dropping off keeping the power band flat rather than linear helps a lot.
I think you know the answer lol
It all depends on the person tbh.
Id take a big V8 over this 2.0L any day. Rides might be nicer in the v8s as well.
Would be great to hear from y’all
Those dark horses look pretty sick for the money. I will be interested in looking at one and consider trading my fl5 for one but I doubt it.
Id recommend waiting for the softer/oad oriented Integra Type S...
So funny to see the Newton Supercollider on here! I live a block away and have to go through it on my daily commute. It’s a living hell some days. Your comments were spot on haha
I like that name! We call it the circle of death
Must be a waze bug, having the same issue in my supra using an iPhone 11
I’ve had the same Waze issue in the past three cars (including my current FL5 Si). The solution is always the same: pull the app up on your phone then shut it down (like swiping up on an iPhone). It will reset the Waze CarPlay overlay perfectly, every time. Seems to keep it fine for anywhere from a day to a month at a time doing this.
Good to hear all the love for the civic R man I always give the thumb up when I see one.
Can we get a night drive in the Type R? Want to see what it looks like with all the lights on at night.
Stunning interior. Honestly the civic punches WAY above its weight on interior design
You're still lucky they're doing 400 per year. Over here in dubai it's 100 cars per year
Thanks for the honest, real world, no nonsense review.
The Civic interior is perfect, love it.
Just got an SI, my shifts arent the most Fluid, but im getting there. and I love my car haha.
I appreciate people using their blinkers anytime they are moving from one lane or street to another.
"Its 50 degrees. Its unseasonably warm in Massachusetts" meanwhile I'm absolutely dying here in Florida at 52 😭
I'm still so in love with my 9th gen 6 6 coupe accord
I turned the music down as you lifts off from the parking. man, if I had a genie, Iwish I have this beast. Subscribed.
If this is bad traffic, I wish I lived there. Dallas, TX makes me never want to leave my house because bumper-to-bumper traffic exists from 6am-8pm.
Lol when he turns it on and the engine starts it’s just silent, no noise at all. Exciting..
Nice patch work at 7:57
14:15, adaptive does let you maintain speed but you need to adjust distance and change lanes before it starts slowing down. VW golf has it nailed down, it speeds me up when indicate and start turning my steering. really clever
No system is good. They are all annoying.
I’m getting it as my commuter car to work specifically …just wanted something that was snappy and quick and reliable but also good to just cruise the 20 miles to my office every day …just nice knowing that you have some power under the hood when you need it 😉
I kept looking at the Blue Levante, such a beauty !
This aint no real commute unless you getting up out of bed late for work and start swimming in traffic. Didn't hear that engine whine enough lol.
This is a sleeper. The sportiness is so subtle (& works too).
What a great review, especially your comparison with your other cars. Excellent job
the smooth engine revving up is golden
Beautiful, graceful car. Love it. I also laughed when you said LA is the worst in the world. LA is like an open country road compared to King's Highway (Ontario) 401 here in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). LA ain't seen nothing yet.
Gotta admire the urus in front of you at the start of the video, also great vid!
I really love the design and I hat the Type-R represents!
u did a PHENOMENAL job. Now i'm less interested in the type r, and more interested in a couple of those cars on the lot, right before u drove out the dealership
Let them know I sent you.
As owner of the 2023 civic type r fl5 all i can say is wow🎉❤
18 was the way to go on this. I have 18s on my 2020 and it’s so much different from driving with 20s which felt like a tank.
Your not the only one! Waze has been a real pain on carplay lately.
Its so cool! You can even take your hands off the steering wheel!
Many of your reasons for the typeR describe exactly why driving a saab (aero model) in the days of old was so awesome but yet very underrated. Always thought Saab were the swedish Hondas …at least the 9000 and newer models
Stuck between used FK8 for high 30s, new Si, new sport touring hatch..
Good luck!
@@nate1971 thank you so much! So I really just need to go drive an Si and FK8 I guess!
I WAS NOT ATTRACTED NOT WHEN CARS ALL MY LIFE I LOVE MOTORCYCLES FOR SPEED FOR THIS ENERGY..I DON'T KNOW MOTORCYCLES ARE BETTER THAN CARS, YOU FEEL THIS DRIVE AND SPEED...
as someone who drives a 6-6 accord coupe, I would love to drive one of these type r's one day
if you drive this new civic type r it makes you forget that it was front wheel drive....such a great car
The circle of death in Watertown! Takes me back to living in Oak Sq. Brighton. Great vid!
Everyone talking about how great this car is needs to watch from 4:30 on, then watch it again. That is exhibit A on why FWD sucks. Wheelhopping front wheels are not fun, wet or not, that is not conducive to a great driving experience and you will experience that when you drop the hammer in this thing.
appreciate your input and personality :)
Boston drivers are just like NYC drivers. The whole dialogue is what I say on my daily commute in my Si
This is by far my favorite looking hot hatch but I can’t get over it being FWD
them new hondas look so slick inside
I'm Botho Lesoeu from South Africa 🇿🇦, I just wanted to say I love watching your videos(this is my second video). I think I need I need to buy that car. Don't get me wrong I already knew it awsome.
It’s so wild seeing him drive around and me knowing exactly where he is😂😂
You have so much freedom on your roads. It’s a lot less stressful than trying to go SO slow on a big highway, with the risk of big fines and points off your licence. Gah! So jealous.
“It is seasonably warm here in New England”
Boy that didn’t age well after two weeks 😂
Time stamp 4:18
Love that blinker, Not a local. Hahahahaha Hysterical, this guy's got jokes😊😅
Great content as usual. Keep em coming!
