    If you use adhesive tape before the final glue-up, try wrapping in cling film first then apply the tape. No need to use the hair drier/heat gun or craft blade. Nice video and good commentary.

    Lovely job. I've made some caveat comments but still admire the job. Age 68, and with time on my hands, I'm thinking about playing some 3rd XI cricket. I'm fitter than most players under 30 because I cycle, run, swim, do gym whereas cricket doesn't make you fit. But eyes don't change focus like they used to. Problem: my old bats need new handles, and I haven't found anywhere to do that like they did in the 1960s and 1970s. George Coker sports shop opposite station in Tunbridge Wells... miss you

      Thank you for your comments Stephen. Some really useful tips in them.
      Re handles are quite common still, we can’t do them currently, as we don’t have the correct jig. Happy to put you in touch with someone who can though 👍🏻

    For removal of tacky residue remaining from sticker removal try a small amount of Eucalyptus Oil on a cotton wool ball. Great stuff for removal of many substances generally.

    I much don't care about repairing anything, let alone cricket bats. But, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Nice work.

    Just came up in my feed. Nice video mate. I love cricket and I find watching bat repairs quite therapeautic. There is something satisfying, both as a cricketer and a woodworker about watching the process of taking an old and battered bat and repairing or refurbishing it and it looking all new and shiny again. Also you said Uncle Charlie? Thats cool that you are Charlie's nephew and you are also into bat work. I have and still use and love my Charlie French Advance bat that I bought years ago through my mate Bricey who played for Welbeck, amongst others where I know your family had some connections and interest. Nice one bro...

    Great work but one piece of advice. Get yourself a good respirator. I'm a scale modeler and I run into dust and fumes same as you and you want to protect yourself so you can continue to great work for at least the next 30 years, if not more.

    Mask, dust extraction. My generation both ignored it and the dust control options were not as good as now. I'm usually impressed with current focus on dust control and air filtration as prime consideration. I got lucky (part-time hobbyist). Others had lungs wrecked. Rethink and treat health and safety as main thing

      @@tbrowniscool Yeah my dad's mate was a spray painter and died from cancer really young, like 40 and two other spray painters we know both died of cancer under 50 years old. All of them used to paint two pack without masks and shit. Not worth your life.

    Cricket and woodwork restoration. This popped up out of nowhere. I used to play or practice 5 days a week from mid-1960s to early 1980s when marriage and children appeared. Also won woodwork prizes at school, built kitchens, etc. Still have some bats from that time. Handles all floppy as rubber perished. In my day you could have handle replaced, but last specialist cricket shop I went to had no idea about that.
    Has that bat cracked up because of the plastic cover? That was just coming in when I stopped playing, and I thought it was a bad idea. Feed the wood with light wipe of linseed oil was the old practice

    I use a mechanics feeler gauge for getting glue into woodwork splits and cracks, makes it much more thorough.

    do not use any Paste as you call it when Gluing ....or you run the risk of the fibres of the wood not knitting together as well as they possibly can ...just use glue and then clamp everything or tape everything together ...you can then use Fillers after the initial structure of the Bat is dry and secure.

    might suggest warming the stickers up first then they can stretch a bit. embossed stickers tend to crack or lift

    Worried about the smell of cyanoacrylate glue, but not worried about breathing in the fine dust from the sander that must be filling that room. as there is not a single bit of dust extraction

  • @cuebj
    @cuebj ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looked like you were pressing down on sander. Don't. Let the weight of the tool do the work. That way, you don't get the whorls you had to hand sand away

      @bmbatrepair Excellent reply and answers some caveats I raised in other comments.
      In my day, a new bat needed 'breaking in' with an old ball on a mallet, and we treated bats once a year with a very light wipe of linseed oil. Still have my old tin - must be over 50 years old

  • @justinmorgan2126

    Surely it would have been a lot cheaper to buy a new one (pro willow bat - 600 GBP) rather than have it repaired... unless your work is very cheap or the bat had serious sentimental value.

    • @bmbatrepair

  • @nigelhopkinson1887
    @nigelhopkinson1887 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why? The bat with the glue in is never going to be as good as a solid new bat. All that work for a net bat.

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it was a good bat to start with, the repair will leave its pickup and swing intact, though the ball might not leave the bat sweetly. The problem with cheap bats is they don't feel right and make net practice irrelevant or detrimental to playing for real. If you treat nets seriously, bat like you mean it - speaking as a method batter who had to practice carefully to maintain a level. Eye batters might get away with nets for fun to give bowlers the practice

    • @fergusdenoon1255
      @fergusdenoon1255 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "solid wood' is the part that split...
      The wood is only as strong as it's weakest point, which is its grain, the glue is stronger.

    • @cuebj
      @cuebj ปีที่แล้ว +6

      £700 reduced from £1,000 for top grade. £30 for a bat shaped thing that won't swing, balance all wrong, leaves your hands numb if you're unlucky enough to hit a cricket ball with it - OK for tennis ball on the beach.
      Hence restoration for use in nets with composite balls
