  • Learn about the Langstroths’ long journey of heritage service in this beautifully rendered program.
Kathleen and Eric Langstroth, the owners of the G.R. Speck House in the City of New Westminster, BC, are the subject of this film tribute to their commitment to the preservation and restoration of heritage homes and community service.
Over their lifetime together, Eric and Kathleen have undertaken huge restorations in each of the homes in which they’ve lived in the neighbourhoods of Brow of the Hill, Glenbrook North and now Queen’s Park.
Amid stunning videoscapes of New West streets lined with lovingly restored heritage homes from every period (and some beautifully appointed interiors), these preservationists talk about their role as ‘caretakers’, preserving the craftsmanship and style of homes like theirs for the next generation to love and appreciate as much as they do. They strive to maintain a home’s period look with modern function behind the walls - and Kathleen is quick to add that it’s important to put just as much care and planning into heritage gardens that grace the homes.
In the words of Gail North, president of the Queen’s Park Residents Association, “Their attention to detail, and their skill in restorative work is truly amazing. It demonstrates a true love for preserving the life of a fabulous old house... not a museum piece... a truly loved and lived-in home.”
For the past 40 years, Kathleen and Eric Langstroth have also volunteered with community groups to keep heritage issues front and centre, like the Heritage Conservation Area designation for Queen’s Park in 2017. Heritage BC recently presented the couple with an ‘Outstanding Award for Distinguished Service’ in recognition of a lifetime of heritage achievements.
The Langstroths hope the next generation will take up the mantle - maintaining the character of New Westminster’s old homes, ensuring the City’s green space is preserved because it is as much a part of our heritage as the buildings themselves and continuing the push toward gentle densification in neighbourhoods.
