I love that JK Simmons has played two scientists that work with portals, and who would be horrified to meet each other as Ford is obsessed with safety while Cave Johnson doesn't care at all about it.
Having watched this series? Ford is not obsessed with safety as much as "the bigger picture" safety of the dimension. He's shockingly blasé about lots of minor safety issues from now until later... the only thing he's serious about is the portal and the implications of its use.
IF he was serious about safety, he'd have installed something of a protective railing around the portal instead of what was there - nothing.
“When gravity falls
And earth becomes sky
Fear the beast
With just one eye”
Gives me chills every time!
I like how "When gravity falls
and earth become sky" suggests that Gravity Falls is a separate entity from earth instead of a part of it.
@@sin-jay733 No, the first sentence is not (directly) about Gravity Falls, but when gravity(the universal force) falls(reverses)
@@NoxarBoi Ah I see well it could be both.
@@NoxarBoi that makes a lot more sense.
A testament to Alex Hirsch's voice acting; he's voicing an old man right next to an ACTUAL old man (JK Simmons) and it's indistinguishable.
is it
Ford: I began to keep a journal.
Dipper: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! THE JOURNALS!!!
“I began to keep a journal”
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA”
“I’m going to ignore that”
If you ask me the most messed up part about the whole backstory is that Mcgucket would have been the first to invent the PC if Ford hadn't asked for his help. He could've been where Bill Gates is now!
If I remember correctly, Alex said some characters looked better with three fingers and some looked better with five
none of them have 3 fingers. some have 4, but none have 3
Yeah he did say they looked better with four. But my issue is, when you make something central about fingers like the journals, and show them both with 5 and 6 as kids...it doesn't make sense and it's completely inconsistent. I mean I agree four fingers is easier. It's just weird they didn't stick fully to it, confuses me. Makes me wonder if they really meant more to it, being a show like gravity falls.
@@hyrulianhero116 I remember that Alex Hirsch had said that all of the characters canonically have 5 fingers except Ford who has 6 fingers. I'm guessing that the reason they animated Stan and Ford with 5 and 6 fingers as kids is because fingers was a core detail between the two, especially considering that I'm pretty sure Alex said it was also harder to animate 5 fingers on a smaller hand.
@@McBehrer they're not counting thumbs as fingers, lol
@@MarshTheTH-camChannel Then why'd the say three or five, when some have four?
This is where a lot of things make more sense. In the Time Traveler’s Pig, the man that answers the Mystery Shack door in the past had a cleft in his chin- it’s Ford. In Dreamscaperers, there’s a swing set in Stan’s mindscape in front of the shack with one broken swing, and in the one memory where Stan is learning to box, Ford can be seen on the bleachers in the back wearing boxing gloves with his face buried and obscured in a book. And in Carpet Diem, when the twins uncover the room with the carpet, which we saw Stan in this episode lying on the couch staring at Ford’s glasses, Stan picks up the same glasses from an end table and can be seen staring at them with a sad expression. This also give Stan’s scream at seeing wax Stan a whole new meaning. :)
You know what I just realized? If Stanley and Stanford were kids in the 1960s and this show possibly takes place in the 2010s, then Stanley and Stanford are in their 50s
Wow, they look old for 50-yr-old men.
@@Shythalia Stress can give you gray hairs
That would make shermy be somewhere around early forties to early to mid forties at oldest, if that’s true then that family had kids super young
Didn't Stan say later he's in his 70s
@@sophiecooper1824 I think he said he's pushing 70
Fun fact about 4 fingers: In anime, the number 4 superstitiously resembles "bad luck" or even "death", or even relates to the Yakuza, that's the difference between American shows and anime, animes always sticks to 5 fingers.
The more you know.
Isn't the reason it relates to yakuza is because one of the acts of atonement they do when they screw up is cut a finger off. I've also heard another one is to slit your own stomach.
This makes a lot of sense to the character Mista in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind
since he hates the #4 and when the something with the #4 does happen it usually ends with something bad.
Shi means both 4 and death. Which is also why Yon is an alternate word for 4 as well.
Anime hasn’t always stuck to five finger regulation. Osamu Tezuka’s work featured quite a few characters with four fingers, which was an element he borrowed from Disney’s characters. He even went as far as to explain it to the readers in his manga work.
9:55 And to also not really exist, tbh
For those unaware, a perpetual motion machine is something that can’t technically exist, because the idea is that it creates energy from nothing, which is theoretically impossible.
Stanley May be a fool but if he puts his mind to it he can be a genius.
He was able to figure out his brothers crazy invention just by reading a book he wrote
Fun fact that I learned in Anthropology class: Apparently 6 fingers is a dominant trait and 5 fingers is a recessive trait. It's an abnormality called Polydactyly.
I heard that we are slowly losing our pinky fingers.
But the polydactyly is so horrible in the majority cases, the images are a little disturbing.
If thats the case then how come most people don't have 6 fingers and only have 5
@@chrismanning2888 Enough people gained the recessive trait to the point where basically everyone was being born with recessive traits from parents with recessive traits
@@47ratsinahoodie Damn, Imagine if we had 6 fingers. Things would be a bit easier
Ladies and gentlemen.
this is when things get w e i r d
I see what you did there
It’s gonna be some weird armageddon
The reason for 4 fingers most shows make is because of the "Uncanny Valley" effect. As if characters will look very creepy if having animated 5 fingers, as it would fit with the tones of the shows they're in and viewers won't be distracted by the 5 fingers.
Soos: explains story
Saitama: “ENOUGH! SHORTEN THIS STUPID STORY TO 20 WORDS OR LESS!”
The four-finger standard Groening had in place was a homage to the earlier cartoons of the Golden Age of Animation - particularly Disney, who gave Mickey Mouse four fingers because it proved to be a cheap method of drawing hands, reportedly speaking. It seems a lot of other animators and cartoonists took it to heart and it’s become a staple of Western animation ever since.
Actually Stanley and Stanford never had a younger sister. They had a younger brother named Shermie who is dipper and mabel's grandfather.
I actually live in Idaho so I could've done that Hunt (not gonna say what it is) but I was too young to actually go anywhere on my own but it's difficult to go anywhere except here since I'm not comfortable being in different places for more than a Day, I do however want to go to Oregon sometime and visit that weird place with bizarre gravity, atleast once because life's too short and this is special, you can't find these types of things elsewhere and it's not the same as actually being there, I got to experience the full Solar Eclipse and it was very different than on images or video, the temperature outside was cooler, there was bright light and shadows in a very bizarre way and was just an experience I will never get if I wasn't there and see it for myself.
I originally thought the baby shown at 10:33 was Sherman Pines, the grandfather of Dipper and Mable. But when doing the math, it doesn't make sense for the baby to be Sherman. I believe the baby is in fact Sherman's child, aka the father of Dipper and Mable, just being babysat by the grandparents at the time. And I can back this up with proof.
From what we know, the show states that Stanford disappeared 30 years before Dipper and Mable showed up in Gravity Falls, while it is also stated that the Pine Twins didn't see each other for 10 years after the night their father kicked Stanley out of the house, and they wouldn't meet again until the day Stanford disappeared. Meaning the night we saw the baby shown at 10:33 was 40 years before the start of the show.
The good news is that the show gives us an actual year of when the main events take place: 2012
Dipper and Mable are turning 13 by summer's end, which puts their birth in 1999. This is relevant as we can subtract 13 years off 40 years, which proves that the baby (most likely born either 1971 or 1972) cannot be Sherman, as the child shown would have been 27 or 28 at the time of the twins' birth. And Sherman is said to be the grandfather of the twins, so he's definitely not the baby we see.
While not officially confirmed, it actually makes sense for the baby to be Dipper and Mable's father, as the age he would be at the time of their birth makes it very likely. Plus, Sherman could have been the eldest child of the Pines family who graduated when the twins were in their preteens.
I mean Stan did have a point about burning the journals, if the machine is so dangerous you better destroy it and and the instructions
To be honest I thought the baby was Dipper and Mabel's dad and Shermy was their grandfather and the Stan Twins' older brother. I assumed his parents were babysitting. Timeline wise it would work out because it would make Dad Pines 40ish.
I thought the same thing.
I like how we have to call him dad pines because we never saw anything about their parents.
This makes more sense. Fan artists drew Shermie (assuming it's short for Sherman) as Stan and Ford's older brother.
Technically, Ford and Stan have a younger brother, not a sister. Stan, when introducing Ford to Dipper and Mable, says they are: "Shermie's grand kids." Shermie, short for Sherman.
Very minor spoiler
7:47 I feel like this probably wasn't intentional, but I think it's cute how Stan and Ford dealt with this in pretty much the same way that Dipper and Mable dealt with their school photo.
Thirty years and now he's back,

Thanks caleb
This was the first episode of season 2 I ever watched
Did it spoil a little bit of the show for you or did it merely motivate you to watch the show from start to "finish"
@@eddygendron8773 the ladder, I stopped watching it because I didn’t have Disney XD at the time, but the first day I got it, I saw Gravity Falls was on and I watched it and wanted to see the entire second season from start to finish
J.K Simmons! A pleasant surprise when I heard the author speak. I was like, is that Tenzin from Avatar?!
26:10
Nic's dad sounds...interesting.
Ford getting mad about the perpetual motion machine always irritates me.
1-All Stan did was bump the table and the whole thing was shot. That machine was not well put together.
2-There was no clear proof the machine was actually perpetual. The people scouting the fair likely wouldn't have taken it seriously anyway.
3-If he already made one perpetual motion machine, what was stopping him from making another and getting famous with that?
In the simpsons the only people who have 5 fingers is Jesus and God.
It’s a tale! Of TWO stabs!
It’s not their grandma, it’s their grandfather that’s the brother of Stanley and Stanford, Shermie.
Oh next Episode is Possibly my Favorite one not counting the Finale parts
You know, this is the only episode where I noticed an continuity error. This past version of Stan is not at all like his recollections from the Dreamscaper Episode.
People who hate Mabel, but are biased to Dipper's bull irritate me.
heck, even Alex Hirsch got his show's comedy from the Simpsons.
3:35 or the US president in Red Alert 3
The baby was named shermie pines, it was a boy 👀
Worth the wait
You should watch _Infinity Train_ one of these days.
And the new Ducktales
I've always been meh about the finger thing myself. They make a big deal about fingers and end up causing alot of inconsistent animation because of it. Make one have 6 instead of five. But all new kids in show have four. But the gruncles have 5 and six as kids. It always, even to this day, has me wondering if there's more to it lol. Like maybe neither Gruncle are human😶
I'm pretty sure the baby in the flashback is their younger brother not sister. I could be wrong but if it's their sister then I would wonder the explanation for why Dipper and Mabel have the last name Pines. I guess maybe their father was born out of wedlock or something but typically if that was their sister you would expect her child to have her husband's last name especially since the Pines don't seem to be a particularly progressive family at that point
