Major Eruption from Ruang; Tsunami Watch, Stones Fall from Sky

  • The strongest volcanic eruption in more than a year just originated from the Ruang volcano, resulting in tsunami watches being posted. The volcano's lava dome exploded at approximately 7:40 pm local time, sending a plume of ash to an altitude of 21 kilometers or 69,000 feet. Two kilometer high lava fountains were subsequently generated alongside numerous pyroclastic flows, and now there is a chance that the nearby Tagulandang Island will be evacuated. Today's video discusses the ongoing eruption and the rapid escalation which occurred in the last 18 hours.
    Thumbnail Photo Credit: Photo Credit: McGimsey, R. G., Alaska Volcano Observatory / U.S. Geological Survey, avo.alaska.edu/image/view/66321. This image was cropped, overlaid with text, and then overlaid with GeologyHub made graphics (the GeologyHub logo and the image border).
    Note: This video's thumbnail image does not display the eruption of the Ruang volcano but rather the eruption of Alaska's Mount Spurr volcano in 1992. I chose this photo as it well showcases what a plinian eruption looks like.

    • @GeologyHub
      @GeologyHub  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      A tsunami is far from guaranteed. It might not occur. However, I deem the risk of a tsunami occurring to be high enough that people in the relevant area should in my opinion, evacuate.

    • @davidcranstone9044
      @davidcranstone9044 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@TrassikActually the biggest threat that he mentions is pyroclastic flows extending across the strait and up onto the coast of the T-island. And yes that is possible - pyroclastic flows from Krakatau took out a village on the shore of Sumatra.
      However (I imagine) there are two even worse case scenarios. The first is a major caldera collapse - I doubt if any reasonably cautious expert could totally exclude that, though they might have good reasons to say it is unlikely (GH and the professional-level commenters - any opinions on this?). The second is if the collapse extended beyond the coastline, producing a massive explosion as seawater came into contact with magma. That would presumably only be plausible if the magma chamber extends under the sea - I have no idea whether it does, or if it is known one way or the other. If it did happen it might well be a Krakatau-scale event, with a major tsunami and climatic effects for the next couple of years..

      Yeah it is awe inspiring in every sense of the word i.e. terrifying, awful, and fascinating all at once. Given the rapid extent of escalation I suspect we are dealing with some form of convective crystal fractionalization induced by magmatic mixing/rejuvenation as these kids or events based on the analysis of crystal cores from explosive eruptions indicate that the escalation of such larger voluminous eruptions VEI 5+ tend to occur in a timescale of hours to days drawing much of their rapid energy from the sudden and rapid release of latent heat of a cascading chemical release of latent energy.

    Evacuation alert was issued since last night around 5-7 hours ago for the island surrounding the volcano. While I'm living on another island far away. As per some info from the locals, the majority of people in the west coast have been self-evacuating since the tsunami watch issued (still unconfirmed by the government but highly likely). The disaster mitigation agency is currently deployed in the region to oversee the remaining evacuation and monitor the situation up close.

    Wow - do we know the S02 content of the ash plumes? 2km sustained should be enough to get that stuff into the upper atmosphere and affect weather next year if it keeps happening. What are the chances that we can see a situation like with Tonga's volcanic eruption, which you'd hope would be a once-a-century event. I saw some of the rescue footage and thought that was so dangerously close, but they were trying to help people.

      @@GeologyHub but one can never really know....sometimes a volcano is just a volcano, but sometimes it is something much more dangerous but unless it has shown that danger previously how could you ever know if it holds that potential if it is one of those types of gassy thick magma anyway. That it had an undersea vent blow out a bit when it got plugged makes me wonder if it has unknown potential.

    • @arrionelton
      @arrionelton 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Good warning. Actually it can get far worse. The pressure buildup of gases etc might cause a catastrophic collapse of the caldera above the magma chamber, allowing billions of tons of seawater to rush into a hot void full of magma, then causing a colossal steam or phreatic eruption of enormous power; something like Krakatoa. As well as destrying the volcanic island in mere minutes, it can set of an enormous Tsunami. Worse than one produced by a large pyroclastic flow.I would leave all these islands, immediately.
