When he held it, that force got transfered to his arms and pushed back against the bullet. Definitely stupid, but it was ultimately getting a C in highscool physics that rendered his experiment useless and killed him.

Multiple books will stop a large caliber handgun round (.40 - .45). I've tried it several times with success.
