    In preparing for this piece, I have seen MANY versions. This is far and away my favorite. This Bunthorne nails the sarcasm and humor and music.

      The more I see it and the more I am mad about the way the guy Bunthorne does it. It's exhilarating. Can't we have the second duett (the one with Grosvenor) ? Thank you anyway this video is my spleen-killer...

    The show was directed by my dad, Kelly Ward. It was put on at USC. They were all students! He also choreographed it. It was one of my favorite that is why I decided to share it.

    Hahaha! Very good Bunrthorne and Jane! Really funny, and you guys are very creative! Who put this on? Are there any more videos of any of the other numbers? I would love to see this chap do "If You're Anxious for to Shine." Also would love to see "If Saphir I Choose to Marry." :-)

    Fun staging, but Jane goes sharp the whole time.

      I agree! It always helps if the principals can sing properly and in tune! In my opinion this did not merit an encore; the singing is of a poor standard and the players completely ignored the whole empty stage. This is a classic item for a dance and some 'stage business' which would utilize more of the stage to say nothing of following the G & S tradition. A wasted opportunity, I think.

      @@judynesher5898 “Stage business” What video were you watching Judith? You’d be hard pressed to find a more physically dynamic Bunthorne on the whole of TH-cam. I have seen a few productions of G&S here in London, some at the Colosseum by the ENO and some by amateur groups. This is the best choreographed duet I have ever witnessed, and they ran across the stage (and bridge) a few times too… What video were you actually watching Jude? Were you staring at the bloody window?

    The biggest mistake with G&S productions are the damn encores.. So Go To Him was a clever number the first time around. But going around with it twice really breaks the continuity of the piece. Even the D'Oyly Carte discouraged encores......

    • @judynesher5898
      @judynesher5898 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think they discouraged encores at all! In fact certain items were specifically written to promote encores. G & S were 'crowd pleasers'!!!

      Couldn't disagree more - I love the encores!!

    • @ah7910
      @ah7910 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Breaks continuity”, what on earth are you smoking? This was the most dynamic, deliciously funny performance of this song I have ever seen. Here we have two very likeable, very competent performers and their working in two playful encores was well-deserved and innocent fun (and lasted less than a minute!) Lighten up. I was clapping like a seal as I watched on my tablet! I have seen enough bad G&S to know genius direction and all-too rare talent when I see it. This was a masterclass production and shocking that these artists are classed as mere amateurs. Every production is an adaptation of sorts, and every adaptation will be slightly different. I can’t believe anyone would begrudge 45 seconds of a reprise for such a fun piece of music.

    • @JoshFreilich
      @JoshFreilich ปีที่แล้ว

      I say twice is not enough! Give this song in particular THREE encores! No, FOUR! FIVE! MORE!!!!
      In fact, give us the full song and not just 45 seconds of it. AND SPEED THE TEMPO UP EACH TIME, PLEASE !!!

    Too much motion on the stage, in the contemporary "let's make it a VISUAL experience" - distracting from absorbing harmony and text of the actual composition. I know these things are meant to come "alive" on the stage, but "alive", not frantically over-visualized with movement for a modern audience that is, quite frankly, musically illiterate, who wouldn't know an unresolved diminished seventh chord from a tonic resolution and wouldn't recognize an expressive non-chord tone if it strode right up to them and introduced itself in women's clothes.

    • @judynesher5898
      @judynesher5898 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't have to be able to recognize a diminished seventh in order to enjoy Gilbert & Sullivan!!!?

    • @ah7910
      @ah7910 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It distracted YOU but that doesn’t mean it distracted others. What arrogance! I understood every word this talented young man sang. “Over-visualized for a modern audience”… if some basic choreography offends, close your bloody eyes. I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard and enjoyed this particular song so much before, having seen my fair share of humdrum Patience and other G&S productions. The lines of his body in particular, brought the character to life in such an inspired way, coupled with his outstanding comic timing - I am so impressed with this performance. I was on the edge of my seat and clapping like a seal by the end - all through a low-resolution video on my tablet screen - never having enjoyed myself so much at live performances. This actor has charisma dripping from every pore of his body, and THAT is the missing ingredient in most G&S productions - dynamic, exciting performers. I am so angry you would leave such a miserable comment, the two very likeable, very talented performers have ever right to be very proud of their delicious performance and the director should give themselves a pat on the back too. I bet you are an amateur performer or a frustrated wanna-be performer yourself and this charismatic, funny Bunrthorne got under your skin. I was a bit jealous too, it’s OK.
