It could be the app has issues on your phone. You can try adding from a different device. Also, if this is your first time using the app, you may not have given permission to access your contacts. To enable this: Contact List - Tap the upper-right three-button menu - Tap the Import Contacts option - If not enabled - Tap the blue toggle button to turn on Import Contacts

Each Alexa can call other by device name, which can be found on Alexa app. No separate phone # required.

It can call landlines too if you are in one of the supported countries.
