I've watched some other watercolor unboxings, and you're actually supposed to push the metal flaps downward slightly, wedge the pan in between, and then push until you hear a click. You can watch thefrugalcrafter click them in in a few of her videos (i think one of them is when she reviewed the Prima watercolors) or Teoh/parkablogs when he reviewed the prima tins as well (or any watercolor set with pans), if you're confused about what I'm saying. hope this helps!
Amanda Lee Ahhhh, thank so much! x_x I'll need to watch the other videos and give it a try. I figured I was doing something wrong, but I haven't had the motivation to fix it yet, as they've just been sitting on my desk, haha. I appreciate your help!
Yes, bend the tabs in before you try to insert the half pan. This way, you just have to use the half pan to squeeze the tab back out just enough to insert the pan. The pans will be very snug and secure.
your video is so helpful! i ordered the 24 halfpan set, but your description of scarlet red convinced me to buy it separately to add it. thank you for posting, i cant wait to get my set!
@@hamerray guess same aplies to usa products if they were to be shipped to europe. i've bought a 24 set of da vinci paints. the paints cost something like 70USD, but all in all, shipping, customs, vat, and in the end it becomes ~140-150 Euros :)
I agree with buying from Jackson's. I bought a similar Schmincke set from Jackson's UK and even with shipping it was less than half the price buying it in the States would have been.
Yeah, the difference in price is crazy! I've been eyeing this set for a while, and one day I noticed Amazon's price was suddenly a lot lower at $180 instead of the usual $300, so I jumped and bought it. I guess Jackson's had run out of stock for a few months on Amazon, so it was only available at the higher price. I'm glad I realized the difference and could take advantage of it. :)
that just happened to me! This same exact set was available on amazon with the seller being from Jacksons. I got it for a whopping 150 dollars without shipping and it was the last set available!!! Im so glad i made that choice
I was wondering how the rest of Schmincke watercolors' results, and so far your video has been the more helpful and concise. I know I won't be using half of these for my way of painting. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the heads up on international palettes! I just bought my first artist grade Schminkce palette from Jackson's! They're currently having a summer sale on watercolor sets too - score!
@Peter Kotchev No not at all I love my art even if the peice looks a bit odd to others or even me i find the process just so cool and i'd never stop because i need to check with someone else for the colour of something. The only part that annoys me is skin tones. Ive endes up doing caucasian people as grey, yellow, orange ect and darker skin tones as red and purple. I now have a skin tone set from prima so even if its a bit off atleast im on the right track.
Sepia Brown is one of my favourites in my set. I am pretty close to getting to the bottom of the pan on this one while pretty much all of my other ones are still pretty full (my set is about a year old now) In general I love every single color, all of them are so gorgeous.. I wish to one day create a series of artwork that highlights one certain color, one for every color in my 48 pan set
I think you did a great job I'm new to watercolors as well and with so many different sets that I want to try and buy this has helped me immensely because I was almost deciding not to try schmincke because of other artist comments about them not having his intense of pigment but I love the colors that you laid out... and thanks so much for the hint about Jackson's
Dick Blick has the price right now at $244.89. Still pretty expensive. Jacksons is at Price $169.87. Huge difference and thanks for that tip. Its very easy to snap the pans back in. You just squeeze the metal holder in tight before you put the pans in and then the pans snap in tight. I bet you figured that out by now. You put in the forward part of the pan and push down the back side and it snaps in tight.
Great video, really appreciated the fresh approach and Thank You for the valuable tip, You just saved me $134.00 .I was ready to push Blick's purchase button, hesitated and decided to try one more review, but on TH-cam and not Google. Again, I thank You for a very nice video and a money saving tip.
You shouldn't need to bend back the flaps. To fix your lose pans, remove them, bend the flaps back a bit, and then insert the pan by first placing it against the flap, and then gently pressing down on the other side. It should snap into place and doesn't wiggle. The Flaps are not meant to be bend in anyway.
Can you compare Rembrandt to Schmincke watercolor paints in pans? I am wondering which is better to purchase since I found them online in a similar price :)
You don't want to permanently stuck on one place cause as you progress you will notice preferences in brand so you can switch out and replace easily. However if it is a big annoying point you can always place in thin magnetic strips ;p you can buy those per sheet in just about any craft store ;) add a magnet on the back of the pan and you should be good to go. Free Tip: add a Full Pan of White gouache to your palet as it gives a ton of extra colors and is awesome to turn any warm yellow in to a sandy beach color.
Hi! Sorry for the delayed response, just got back from vacation! Excellent point! :) I'm definitely hoping to try other brands in the future, so I agree that having removable pans is a must. The metal flaps in this palette are flexible enough that I can easily bend them outward to swap out the pans as desired. I was just a bit of a noob when I recorded this video and didn't realize how to put them back in properly, haha. ...and that's a GREAT tip about about gouache! I've been wanting to try gouache for several months now and just ordered some on Amazon yesterday actually!
What are the colors that this 36 set missing compare to the 48 set? I’m deciding between the 36 and 48 half pan sets, I don’t really need the metallic colors.
To keep the half pans in place, I have purchased adhesive backed magnet tape (in a roll), cut to size and simply attached it to the bottom of each pan before snapping it in place in a metal pallette. It's solved this problem for me. The reason the pans are completely filled with the Schmicke is they are poured pans, while the Windor Newton art extruded from a solid rope of paint, and it is cut into the pan size. I purchase tubes, nearly exclusively, and pour my own pans.
Nice! That's a brilliant idea. :) I'm sure that makes them super easy to move around and rearrange as desired. Thank you for watching and sharing the info!
