I decided to start my journey learning mandarin. I just ordered the Integrated Chinese textbook & workbook and the Living language set and Get talking Chinese. TBH 70% of the shows I watch are Chinese dramas and I know this sounds weird but I've been picking up and recognizing words and so I decided I want to learn mandarin so I can watch my shows without subtitles, also I've always wanted to go to China since I was a kid. I used to practice some phrases in mandarin with some of my Chinese coworkers but I would like to progress past the most basic greeting and random phrases. Thank you for this video helping me get the ball rolling with my Mandarin journey.

There is a Living Language edition set for Japanese as well, it costs around $/€40
A number of people (rather for beginners) also seem to like the Japanese From Zero series, the Genki series, or various books geared towards the different JLPT levels comparable to the HSK in Chinese.

I use learning chinese characters from Ms. Zhang; short-term spoken chinese 2nd edition; hanyu jiaocheng and hsk level 1 and 3 all of which I got from the school I was attending while in China. All come with audio except for one. They're pretty handy though. Since they're solely text books, they do get boring but are still functional.

I prefer New Practical Chinese Reader 😁. HOWEVER, my 2 tutors are both previous professors from BLCU, so...they’re a bit biased I guess. But free instruction, the audio and video are all available online if you look hard enough. Also, an older text had also been recommended to me by Grandma Lili, (who’s a retired language and calligraphy professor and helps me out when she can. Unfortunately, we both share a serious health problem and she’s actually spent more time in the hospital in Chengdu. One funny-you should see nurses faces when her granddaughter arranges for us to FaceTime when both of us happen to be in hospitals at the same time. Gotta love 21st century technology! 😂 ) were the John De Francis (sp?) books. Lili said they were/are banned in China and although outdated, they take a different approach than most modern texts.. De Francis also wrote a book on the history, development and future of the Chinese language that’s supposedly very controversial. I have it, but haven’t had time to read it yet. Since I have a regular tutor/instructor, although Lili speaks only Chinese to me, purposely, when we talk; she’s been working with me primarily on characters, writing and calligraphy. Along with traditional calligraphy supplies, she and her granddaughter have also sent me some Chinese Readers (both Chinese only and a few with Pinyin and/or English) and Chinese comic books. She believes non-Chinese students need immersion in more than just textbooks; she uses a lot of reading simple books and news, movies/tv shows and music. I’ve found, for me anyways, that these have helped ME more than just focusing on flash cards and texts. But, also, understand I’m quite a bit older than many students and I’m not in China.
One last thing (sorry, another long post); I don’t know how accessible eBay is in China, but many of the books you showed can be found much cheaper on eBay than Amazon-especially for people here in the US. Just make sure you inquire about the actual condition of the book-especially workbooks and character workbooks. 😁. (Experience talking...)

    • @elaineg60

Elementary Chinese I may have mentioned before; my primary Doc, (who’s also a friend & has known me since my 3rd year of Med School), has mentioned multiple times now that he hasn’t seen me this excited about something since Med School and the “sparkle” he said I lost when my spinal injury ended my medical career-is back. All because I’m having such a blast learning chinese, calligraphy and Chinese brush painting. I think a big part of it is also working with my Son’s friends; they’re an incredible group of kids I’ve been honored to work with and learn from. A couple of them call me their “美国妈妈”. 😊. And then there’s Grandma Lilī...oh my goodness, nothing like a 78yr old Chinese Grandma to get you “off your pity-potty, and set a fire under your ass!”. (She LOVES it when I tell someone that’s what she’s done for me. 😂. “新成语”! ). I’m still hoping & praying I can get over there at some point, but Bill (Doc) thinks I’m nuts to even consider going. That’s ok, it’s not the first time. 😁

Thank you so much for your recommendations! I will look for my favorite ones. Currently I am studying in a Chinese School (online for now) but I am not too comfortable with that book and also with amount of information they give us, I feel it is too much for the time we have. For example we do 3 or 4 Units from HSK book per month...3 lessons per week (2 hours each one) almost 37 pages of one PDF per lesson with a lot of new words 00related to the ones in the book, grammar, characters and more. I love the language and I do apreciate the effort the teacher puts, but I feels it is too much for me. Is my brain too small? Or this metodology is too fast and overwhelming? I will love people reading this tell me how is it for you in your lessons? I am interested in this language since I was a kid, my grandfather was chinese (He died before I was born) ...but my brain feels so drained.

I wanted to learn just because I got tired of reading English subtitles in Chinese dramas.
Then, I found some Chinese dramas that didnt even have English subtitles that I wanted to watch.
Theeeeeeen🙃 I wanted to read the original novels of my favorite Chinese dramas
Theeeeen, I figured why not plan a trip to China and let that be my first out of the country experience.
Then I started to Really study and find time to immerse myself in the culture. I learned about 30-40 characters, I can write them and I learned a few basic conversational phrases and some things on grammar.
All that transpired within 3 weeks going in 4 on the 26th.
I literally just implemented common phrases in my studies last week.
I started with pronunciation, grammar, and listening and slowly progressed from there.
      I love it so far.

Does any one know if its possible to get integrated Chinese in traditional and not simplified? Can't find it any where online and I figure here is probably the best place to ask. Never mind I found them on amazon, but I'm for sure gonna check it out eventually and try and learn.
I'm a complete beginner and my only knowledge of Chinese is through Chineasy and sadly rosettastone (Horrible for asian languages, just confuses you more, heard its good for Spanish etc. though) and doulingo haha, Chineasy is the best though. Also I want to learn it in traditional because I'm hoping I can study at a college in Taiwan (National Taiwan University Probably) and that I'll understand some Chinese, so I understand where traditional and simplified are used and their differences.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm looking for good beginner resources for a complete beginner :) Amazing video and channel

Yep, you can get Integrated Chinese in traditional characters. And I second you on Rosetta stone not being optimal for Asian languages. But it crushes for romance languages. I also made a video waaaaaaay back in the day about how to learn Mandarin on your own, if you're not in China.

Is this for mandarin,Taiwanese,or Cantonese? Because I was thinking about getting that Chinese everyday book bc I’m having trouble with the characters but idk if it’s for Mandarin or not

Mandarin Chinese. Taiwanese also speak Mandarin also, but they use the traditional writing. But Taiwanese also speak a multitude of languages. Cantonese is mostly spoken in Hong Kong.

Yep! There are answers! I'm using Living Language to learn Spanish! It has a nice easy self-study progression to it. Make sure you get the version with CDS amzn.to/2NjimNg Since tones take lots of listening practice to learn!
