Yeah, finding Chinese university students in your home country is a great way to learn Mandarin! I worked with Chinese international students in college back in Seattle and most of them were just struggle to make American friends. So if you decide to reach out, you're helping yourself AND making a Chinese student's university experience better!
Also I recommend Mandarin Corner on TH-cam.
That channel interviews Chinese folks and has English, Chinese characters and pinyin. Good for natural language exposure.
Also the Drops Language app is great for vocabulary. I haven't seen an app with more vocabulary than that one and it's set up in an addictive way. And it has a freemium version.
But yeah like Kevin said you need to increase your exposure to real Chinese folks. I talk about all the time too.
Learning Chinese is like going to the gym. You gotta struggle through attempting to speak everyday, and that's where the progress happens. Even if all you can do is attempt to read out loud while watching videos with subtitles. Do that. Each day you'll get a little better.
Good Good Study Day Day UP! 🙌🏾

Another tips for all intermediate or advanced Chinese learners- to read the official newspaper or magazine online. I major in translation and that's how I improve my English reading and writing- by reading Economist. Just pick up the contents interesting to you, highlight the words, phrases or idioms that you don't catch on the PDF, counsult the official dictionary and make a weekly or monthly summary( as you like XD). To be clearer, I strongly recommend you find synonymous words or equivalent expressions for those noted on your PDF. And then you will get the most valued and customized" textbook" for you to utilize the language much more freely. Last I have to say Monkey speak great Chinese and wish Monkey enjoy his life here in China.❤️

Anki, for vocabulary. Getting and creating my own decks (especially creating) has improved my learning in every endeavour I have taken. When I put in the work I was able to learn roughly 5000 german words in two months. 1000 words roughly for Russian in three months. This is not language but anatomy has been a lot easier to me from Anki I suggest people looking into it as a secondary source for not necessarily language learning but language reinforcement.

What I do learning Chinese is memorise an extract of a text (it is usually the most complete one) and then I recite and record it. If u have a Chinese partner you can ask him or her to record that part of the text and this way you can hear as much as u want to, and also compare both of them. I am not sure if I explained it clearly but u can ask me again if u did not understand it.

Hey,guys. In my opinion, the most difficult of learning languages that is speaking and listening. My first language is mandarin Chinese, the second language is English, and the third language is Japanese. But honestly, my speaking skills of English & Japanese is not good yet, so I prefer to talk to native speakers for practicing languages skills, then I will know how native speakers think and pronounce. Then maybe my language skills will similar to native speakers.
As a native mandarin Chinese speaker who lived in Beijing for a few years, I prefer to recommend others foreigner TH-camr who can speak Chinese fluently. You guys can search the channels below 【孟言布语(an American guy and a British guy, they both are able to speak mandarin Chinese better than most Chinese people)】, 【老雷(a German guy called Christoph Rehage, he even knows about China more than most Chinese people)】. If you are interested in Beijing accent, you can search the TH-cam channel 口语老炮儿马思睿 Laoma Chris.
By the way, if you are native or similar to native speakers of English&Japanese ,and want to make language partners with me, please feel free to contact me. Looking forward to your guys contacting.

    • @nicholaslemosdecarvalho5328
      @nicholaslemosdecarvalho5328 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Camouflage1s well, I don't think it's easy. I find it hard to understand the spoken Chinese im these apps, so I do like having the Hanzi to help me out. I can identify some of them, so I end up making sense of the sentence they're in. But now it's getting to a part that I am working with "basically the same word" (in piyin), but with different tones (for example: qī, qì, qí, ...), which is giving me a hard time trying to remember all of it and it's Chinese characters

I just became much better equipped to learn as of THIS video. Been passively learning Chinese through audiobooks while i work since 2015 , and only this year started to take things to the next level and start learning writing. Up to about 350 characters now using an HSK based app called “文” And of course Pleco is a constant. Typically, i will try to remember all the characters in the 文 app the way i would the alphabet, in sequential order in groups of 12. (Each HSK sublevel has 120 characters which divides nicely into 2 groups of 5 groups of 12. I feel memorizing them sequentially helps give me a sense of completeness so i never get lost in wondering “which characters do i know?” and also i don’t learn a character only to forget it later and have it fall by the wayside. As i learn them, I go back and forth between 文 and pleco. 文 gives me the stroke order of each character, then for each group of 12 I memorize, i go to pleco, and using the chinese textpad, i practice drawing all 12 characters into pleco. If you get the character right, pleco gives you the definition. Of course, this was all just a learning method of my own invention which will always leave a person wondering if they are missing something. I mean, it gives me a sense of increasing completeness as i build my written vocabulary, but today i had to ask chat GPT what type of textbooks they use in China so i could alleviate the feeling of doubt wondering if i am missing anything. Chat GPT suggested BOYA Chinese just as you did. Even though its geared towards Chinese as a second language, this video stressing the use of a textbook reinforced my hunch that i should get some textbooks. It also never occurred to me to carry a notebook, but that is definitely an aspect i should begin to develop. I think this video also helped me realize the importance of a language partner. As nervous as i am around strangers of ANY language, i don’t think you can learn a language well without busting through a few nerves. So i think this video just bumped me up to the next level starting today.

Damn I found so many things I'm doing the same. I now finished my exchange semester in Shanghai and did the HSK1 test. When starting I immediately started to learn the characters because it's a part of the language and I think not learning them is a wrong way. Through interactions with Chinese and searching random signs in the metro i saved and learned so many more than those 150 in HSK1. At the end I bought the HSK2 books and 2 Chinese Briefe storys for Level 1 and 2 😂but the footmassage is a good idea for next time haha 🤗great video 😊

Hey Kevin, another great video! The boya text books are amazing and I loved all the tips and pointers you have. One of the greatest helps for me was writing flash cards, starting with pinyin and then progressing to characters. On the back I would write the translation, then give 2-5 sentence examples using the new vocabulary. This would not only help me to remember the new vocabulary, but give a great understanding of where it fits into a sentence grammatically. I could take a few dozen and fit them in my jacket pocket bound by a rubber band and whip them out throughout the day giving my brain plenty of opportunity to absorb and recognise these new words while reminding me to use them that day (I was living in Yangshuo at this time). I’m heading there in August and would love to meet you while I’m there if you’re free! Keep up the great work with your language progression and videos mate :)

Pleco is awesome! You could do a whole video on it, showing all the features and add-ons. I'm thinking about paying for some but not sure how useful they'd be. I definitely want stroke order animations for all the characters, but beyond that I'm sure what else I'd need. I am using an app just called HSK 1 that I like but I've already found translations that don't match any other source online. I found out the app is written by a non-native speaker so I'm scared to keep using it due to more errors.
    Thanks for all the recommendations.

Beyond the intent to learn for just economic value or communication with Chinese friends, a side benefit is you can also enjoy Chinese histories, mythologies, texts/TV, etc. eg Three Kingdoms, Condor Heroes. Some of these stories are translated into other languages but they lose the original Shakespearean-like poetic feel in their speech.

Hi there Kevin, thank you so much for always bringing awesome videos especially the educational ones. I'm still a beginner in learning Chinese, if I want to learn Chinese for daily conversation, is following HSK standard a good option?

My plan is to move to China and attend Keats for 2 years and focus only on Mandarin. I have the goal of writing the HSK 6.

I used to watch Thomas Afu's videos but I realised that my pronunciation was getting worse just because his pronunciation is a little weird and so I was unconsciously imitating him

There is a better tool to learn mandarin, use google translate chrome plugin (maybe google is not allowed in China), if you select a word (character in this case) and click on the logo that has been popped up it will immediately show the translation of that word and most educational of all is that you can hear the pronunciation as much as you want.
