I’ve recently beat the game and it was alight. It’s a 7-8/10 game at best. The game was listed at $30 on Amazon and I’ve used a $25 gift card. I think I got my money’s worth for what it is.
worse, its 20 dollars for op demons that will unbalance the game completely and make you feel like they are either mandatory or instigate you to use them instead of the stuff you have to find playing normaly.
Honestly what baffles me the most is that the Phantom Thieves costume is pre-order *locked*. Not pre-order "exclusive" like a lot of other games do their pre-order material, where it just kinda is the deluxe edition, you just got it at a cheaper price. No it's straight up *locked*. As in, unless you fuck with Steamworks, you can't get these costumes anymore. The only real consolation from what I can find is that it's not DLC _content_ but instead is merely a Steamworks license check (similar to Paradox-style DLC) so it's not a permanent disaster from a preservation perspective. Even so, this sort of DLC practice fell out of favor years ago after GameStop preorders were met with so much backlash for a reason. The only ones that get away with it these days are MMOs and Live Services and Soul Hackers 2 is neither of those.
ATLUS really has to give the "mysterious new girl" thing a rest like yeah sometimes it works like Sumire in Persona 5 Royal or Rin in Catherine Full Body but Marie in Persona 4 Golden and Nana in Soul Hackers 2 both just get stapled into narratives they don't fit into and end up feeling tact on So like the trope needs to either become consistent or stop being done
m8 its never worked its a dumb gimmick to get clowns like you to buy the same game twice. They've never done this just for the novelty in the story. Literally just for extra shekels.
'like yeah sometimes it works like Sumire in Persona 5 Royal or Rin in Catherine Full Body but Marie in Persona 4 Golden and Nana in Soul Hackers 2 both just get stapled into narratives they don't fit into and end up feeling tact on" I honestly don't see how Royal and Full Body are any different from Golden or Soul Hackers 2 in that regard. In fact, the only ATLUS game where the "mysterious new girl" thing mostly worked was Strange Journey REDUX (in my opinion, at least), and every other time they tried to pull it off before or since ended in a complete failure. Rin literally breaks the entire premise of Catherine, ruining the established Freedom/Individuality/Commitment trichotomy by introducing a third romance option that not only has almost nothing to do with anything else going on in a story, but is also so cute and sweet and caring compared to the two (very flawed) original girls that most people will naturally gravitate towards him and miss a lot of what made the "classic" Catherine so great. Plus, Rin is a femboy, so he gets additional attractiveness points for that, too, considering that him being a crossdresser was somewhat of a big selling point. As for Sumire, I quite liked her character during the third semester, but the way she was integrated into the rest of the narrative ranges from somewhat decent to awful, and the prologue of the game is a very good example of the latter: the whole point of that scene is that Joker plays the role of a scapegoat, drawing all attention to himself and allowing the rest of the Phantom Thieves to escape unnoticed, but ATLUS just couldn't keep it in their pants, so eager to show the players their new $60 waifu, and so they fucked up everything by randomly having Yoshizawa support Joker during one of the tutorial battles. Just think about it: someone who hasn't played the vanilla Persona 5 and just picked up Royal for the first time will meet Sumire - a character who is barely relevant to the plot for about 80% of the game - before they meet Morgana, or Ryuji, or Ann. How stupid-ass backwards is that? So, yeah, I fully agree with your conclusion that "the trope needs to either become consistent or stop being done", but disagree that ATLUS were ever really "good" at it (SJ REDUX is a single exception that proves the rule).
Japan in general have a trope problem. I'm not sure why it's used as a crutch so much with certain companies picking their go-to for it, but when it comes to girls: "waifu" bait. They know the lonely otaku will bite or people caught up in the cute. I miss when they didn't pay so much attention to archetypes and created characters. Now the characters have to be a characterization. They aren't as bad as others, but still going down the path even Square-Enix found itself.
@@charlottewiltshire6076 SMT games don't overplay their hand, in my opinion. They did seem to fail with SMT V having weak characterization, so maybe the issues is Atlus now. They are trying to sell trends, which was an issue back when that transition was happening with SMT IV Apocalypse. New blood don't have old-school views or ideas, they've been raised in a kawaii and moe generation. It's almost a creative bankrupt issue they have whereas the West inserts political ideology.
Bruh atlus has been really disappointing with the non persona releases and it’s actually getting annoying it’s annoying how they’re just putting all their efforts into persona while having this devil may care attitude about everything else
The demon dlc pisses me off. These are included in every game and now we have to pay $13? Bruh moment. Locking the phantom thieves outfit behind the digital edition really pissed me off tho ngl the Ringo joker looks fire
i'm so glad i decided to skip this game. i was literally a few seconds away from downloading the Digital Premium edition for $90, but my gut feeling pushed me to double check the commentary online. and yeah, it's not worth it.
Atlus day 1 DLC is pretty much guaranteed to be bad unless it's actually good content that they blatantly cut from the game (like the SMTV fiend DLC), which in a way makes it even more painful.
Went on the psn store to pre order a while back and saw that the $90 version had story dlc that the $60 dollar version didn't have and backed out of the store
I wouldn't mind the costume DLC if the whole feature wasn't purely DLC. P4: Golden had it right with the wide array of quests to complete and Atlus basically said "never again."
right? imagine if it was just part of the game's normal player customization. and they made the game, they could made it feel far more natural as well. but nop, its something for battles only.
First of all, thank you for telling me about the smt4 difficulty dlc. I need to download that before the eshop vanishes. I still don't know how I feel about the costumes dlc. For me, that is way too expensive, but at the same time, I wouldn't buy it anyway and it's just cosmetics. If they charged $100 for it, it still wouldn't affect me in any way and my experience of the game would be unchanged and I wouldn't feel like I missed out on anything.
Seriously, my relationship with Atlus and their games have been seriously strained in recent years. It feels like that ever since SMTIV it has been a slow and creeping decent as the series identity and integrity erodes away, SH2 just being the latest example of this. Meanwhile, toxic business decisions make an already bad situation worse, further disincentivizing me to get invested in any way.
Something else I hate is that Ai-Ho and the Mary skin are locked behind the digital ultimate edition and the Phantom Thieves skins were pre-order only but only certain versions. I got the collector's edition (which I have to wait a month for the contents of) and it comes with none of the DLC, not even the Phantom Thieves preorder stuff. If I want to have all the content I have to pay an extra $40 and since there's no upgrade pack or separate DLC I'd have to spend another $90 for Ai-Ho and Mary's skin then hope someone has a spare code for the Phantom Thieves skins. It's genuinely insane how greedy and poorly handled this is.
Just so people know the Steam version of the game is on sale on Fanatical for 20% off, and an additional 5% off until September 6th. Which makes me a bit tempted to go for the premium version as it then becomes about $60... and I kinda want Nemissa... idk... might wait until last minute myself to see how I really feel.
2:20 That's the point, It makes easier to force consumers to buy It now or have to pay for a re-release that will be more expensive than the OG. The fact that is DLC doesn't make It less of a bitch move.
What makes it worse is that they put demons behind a paywall that normally were in the base game of past Atlus games like Mara and Satan. Add on top of that story DLC being day one as well, Atlus is clearly being very predatory with their DLC practices. A good example of a good way to do DLC is Xenoblade Chronicles 3, they didn't have a bunch of day one junk launched with the game, they announced an expansion pass with content that will release over the course of the next year (including a meaty story expansion).
Sounds like I'll be pirating Soul Hackers 2. Been an Atlus fanboy since Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, and its just sad to see the state of this company. P5R is still the last Atlus title I bought and may be the last ever at this rate.
It's DLC practices like this that turn a game I might have picked up on Sale, cause Money's fairly tight atm into an apathetic sigh and probably not going to bother even if it's on Sale decision.
Earlier this year I saw a heavily discounted game on steam but the DLC were almost full price so I started to buy games without any DLC at all, just the base game and thats it, it actually doesn't make that much of a difference tbh and I saved a lot of money...
Well... at least its nice of Atlus to bundle the booster item DLC and the extra story DLC in the deluxe edition, which is what i got. Dunno if it's regional pricing or something but buying the deluxe edition was cheaper than buying base game + story arc DLC. I tried the booster items and thought it was broken af, so i disabled it in the config. But looks like i might need it by the end of the story arc DLC.
I am really split about the dlc, not in the sense that I think it has ups and downs (I absolutely hate it the content given here should have been free and if they absolutely had to make it paid then they are all still incredibly expensive) but rather in the sense that I am unsure on buying them. On one hand I don't want to support the day one dlc practices at any cost but on the other hand Soul Hackers is one of my all time favourite games and I would really love to have the outfits and nemissa as a demon, both of which make me hate the dlc even more and make me want to buy it even less
Would be cool if someone just modded the game to enable the dlc shit for free, sure that’s literally piracy in every way but piracy is cool (also probably not as simple to do as I think it is)
Wait, fucking MASAKADO, SATAN, AND MARA ARE DLC? I can get Nemissa being DLC, she's literally a cameo from a previous game, and even looks the same, but those three are fucking iconic!
I do like the swimsuit costumes. And the weird loop it does trying to zoom at ringo's panties is appreciated to some extend..... but its a lil bit expensive yes
Between the dlc and lame dungeons and underwhelming battle system i might just pass on sh2, which sucks cause if it doesnt sell great who knows when our next smt spinoff stuff will be
Honestly I don’t mind the grinding DLC in games because usually once I’ve beaten the game I like to grind my character out to be as strong as possible. SMT IV Apocolypse made this very fun and easy to do, especially considering you can go beyond level 99, and all stats can be increased to 999. SMT V grinding wasn’t as fun because by the end of the true neutral route you’re already around the max level, and from what I remember there was no reliable way to get stat boosting items with the DLC. That was kind of weird IMO, you’re already selling an easy way to level up so why exclude the one thing you want to level up for? This time around it looks pretty promising, grinding in this game really isn’t that bad in the first place, but if I ever want to make my party unstoppable once I’ve beaten everything I’ll pick it up.
i hate them because they feel unatural. i would rather the game have spots that feel like a natural place to grind as much as i want. having it the way they made just takes away from the gameplay experience.
Let’s be honest, they have been doing a lot of copy pasting for a while, especially the demons, like, make some new ones, I don’t get exited by unlocking the same ones game after game, stop it.
Actually chances are you might have the costumes and they simply aren't appearing because the PC version's costume DLC is broken for a lot of people Though maybe it's fixed by now?
Only DLC I bothered checking out was the extra story arc because I'm a sucker for added content. Gotta say I'm glad it's pretty much a complete package without any of it but severely disappointed Nemissa isn't just in the base game as I love throw backs to the older titles. Still easy enough ignored and didn't snag me the same way I jumped on the SMT IV DLC immediately.
I don't like Atlus doing this but I understand why. Game are more expensive than ever and as controversial as this DLC practice is, it still goes over better than if they were to change $70 or $80 for the game. It's a similar practice to how most fighting games have 3 season passes that drive up the games total price to about $120. It genuinely is a $120 game, but people don't want to pay a premium so it goes over better to low ball it with the base game and then up charge with DLC. Again don't like the practice but I understand it's reason for existing
i was hoping with the demon dlc before I saw it that it was like P5 where they were altered versions of demons form past games, not copies like this. ig with that it was about persona so prob wouldn't have seen them here but would have been cool
yeah, that's how they get you. You get used to shit like this, maybe even support it, then they go deeper. I wonder if you will be fine when you will have to pay for every hour you play. No? Too bad, too late to go back now. Stop gaming? Well, thanks for destroying our passion and taking a leave.
People saying “they’re fine with dlc day1 cosmetics”, but this is exactly what lead to current issue. People started to be less concerned about day1 dlc if they’re “just” cosmetics, so companies became bolder and bolder. Man, no day1 dlcs are acceptable no matter what content they included. Small indie developers are able to put big free expansions, so I’m not ok with big companies doing it day1 for money.
Thanks for breaking this down Nyarly. I grabbed the Lost Numbers DLC. I am not sure why they felt the need to present these side quests as Day One DLC, but oh well, here I am buying it.
Love when i get an ad for a game i already bought XD, anyways living in Mexico game was about 1/2 price+got an xbox store coupon so i bought the deluxe version (includes "Lost Numbers" and Grinding) but the boredom of the dungeons especially Soul Matrix made me shell out for the Costume sets just for the music (have barely used costumes) and in some ways i kind of regret it given the armor items you get can be particularly strong with effects like +Sabbath damage, MP regen on every action and passive Dodge Phys/Gun while improving as you level, i dont use the MP regen and Dodge ones but knowing they exist in my inv kinda corrodes some aspects of the game, ill just say down here the prices are a bit more reasonable for the DLC and if i lived in the US i wouldn't have even bought SH2 (for reference base game only was around 35$ USD equivalent the ultra deluxe with all DLC was 60$, costume DLC was around 6.5$)
I was thinking of getting the DLC but once I found out that you can only see them in battle I decided not to. That is so stupid, why not give option to see Ringo in different outfits while I walk around?

I’ve recently beat the game and it was alight. It’s a 7-8/10 game at best. The game was listed at $30 on Amazon and I’ve used a $25 gift card. I think I got my money’s worth for what it is.
Atlus day 1 DLC be like: 20 Dollars for 9 Demons 😰
worse, its 20 dollars for op demons that will unbalance the game completely and make you feel like they are either mandatory or instigate you to use them instead of the stuff you have to find playing normaly.
I'm just waiting for the game to get cracked cuz i ain't buying all of this shit
Wait what?! Nemissa isn’t even in the game itself? No side mission for her, even if she’s from the same series? Jesus Atlus.
4:39 And you can do that too in Persona 4 Golden.
I really don't understand why they made it like that here.
I'm a simple man I see Nemissa in the thumbnail I click
ATLUS really has to give the "mysterious new girl" thing a rest
like yeah sometimes it works like Sumire in Persona 5 Royal or Rin in Catherine Full Body but Marie in Persona 4 Golden and Nana in Soul Hackers 2 both just get stapled into narratives they don't fit into and end up feeling tact on
So like the trope needs to either become consistent or stop being done
m8 its never worked its a dumb gimmick to get clowns like you to buy the same game twice. They've never done this just for the novelty in the story. Literally just for extra shekels.
'like yeah sometimes it works like Sumire in Persona 5 Royal or Rin in Catherine Full Body but Marie in Persona 4 Golden and Nana in Soul Hackers 2 both just get stapled into narratives they don't fit into and end up feeling tact on"
I honestly don't see how Royal and Full Body are any different from Golden or Soul Hackers 2 in that regard.
So, yeah, I fully agree with your conclusion that "the trope needs to either become consistent or stop being done", but disagree that ATLUS were ever really "good" at it (SJ REDUX is a single exception that proves the rule).
preach
SH2 is persona while SH1 was SMT
@@therealjaystone2344 yep
@@therealjaystone2344 Amen.
Remember when we had costumes to buy in game with in game money in persona 4 golden? I member…
i cant get over lemon lime edition that is the most perfect name for a P5 royal counter part for Soul hackers 2
Damn, and I really wanted that maid outfit.
I'm starting to get a bit nervous for Persona 6.
Saving $0.97 on the DLC bundle is better than in the UK, where buying the DLC separate is £1 cheaper than the bundle because of course it is.
I find it weird that there isn't smt v outfits, party members in Tokusatsu costumes would make me buy the dlc lmao
The only Demon that would be unique to use is Nemisa in that DLC. Definitely not worth 13 bucks.
The demon dlc pisses me off. These are included in every game and now we have to pay $13? Bruh moment. Locking the phantom thieves outfit behind the digital edition really pissed me off tho ngl the Ringo joker looks fire
dont forget how it also breaks balance, since you can get them anytime.
i'm so glad i decided to skip this game. i was literally a few seconds away from downloading the Digital Premium edition for $90, but my gut feeling pushed me to double check the commentary online. and yeah, it's not worth it.
This disrespect for p1 and p2 is getting old now.
I agree about the "new" demons "Saladin", "Nobunaga" And "Jean D Arc".
I only buy physical games so content being locked behind digital purchase is such a huge turnoff for me
I got a soul hackers ad when seeing this
Yep that's what I feared. Im just going to wait until the price drop. I just started SMT 3 and its been a blast.
They're trimming the juicy steak fat and trying to sell back.
8:02 Oh thank you for that, some youtubers don't do that
I for the life of me will not understand why the only atlus game I ever enjoyed was persona 3 portable
The fact that is DLC doesn't make It less of a bitch move.
heard the Costume packs are only worn during battle and not in the open world, which also sucks
There really needs to be a toggle for disabling the DLC demons before you reach their level
All those costumes and not a single Demonica suit!!!
Ngl seeing that Raidou Kuzunoha outfit almost made me buy the dlc. Hate these practices.
always love when you upload brother
Sounds like I'll be pirating Soul Hackers 2. Been an Atlus fanboy since Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, and its just sad to see the state of this company. P5R is still the last Atlus title I bought and may be the last ever at this rate.
Can't wait for Atlus to remake P3FES and have day 1 dlc that includes the answer 🥳
I beat Lost Numbers final boss on recommended level. After two sidequests and some party optimisation it's hard but doable.
Seems like atlus efforts only go to persona nowadays.
Well... at least its nice of Atlus to bundle the booster item DLC and the extra story DLC in the deluxe edition, which is what i got. Dunno if it's regional pricing or something but buying the deluxe edition was cheaper than buying base game + story arc DLC.
I tried the booster items and thought it was broken af, so i disabled it in the config. But looks like i might need it by the end of the story arc DLC.
You know Atlus fucked up when you can make an entire ten-minute video to elaborate on a single word.
Would be cool if someone just modded the game to enable the dlc shit for free, sure that’s literally piracy in every way but piracy is cool (also probably not as simple to do as I think it is)
Nemissa being paywalled is an insult to the first game.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: FUCK NO.
Longer answer: NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Between the dlc and lame dungeons and underwhelming battle system i might just pass on sh2, which sucks cause if it doesnt sell great who knows when our next smt spinoff stuff will be
as a person who bought digital premium I hated how the only thing I felt was worth it was booster pack and the side story
"Marie was handled better"
Lol
Lmao
Let’s be honest, they have been doing a lot of copy pasting for a while, especially the demons, like, make some new ones, I don’t get exited by unlocking the same ones game after game, stop it.
i like akechi with a tommy gun
Babe wake up Nyarly uploaded a New video
Actually chances are you might have the costumes and they simply aren't appearing because the PC version's costume DLC is broken for a lot of people
Though maybe it's fixed by now?
With SMT V Atlus started to fall off really hard and it's not showing signs of stopping
Unless you are into hard wallets, I strongly disagree with it being "something that most definitely is worth your money"
Thanks for the review, I was considering the story DLC but I’ll skip it.
I think it's funny how every channel I see tackle this question was compelled to say no in the thumbnail.
i was hoping with the demon dlc before I saw it that it was like P5 where they were altered versions of demons form past games, not copies like this. ig with that it was about persona so prob wouldn't have seen them here but would have been cool
Hmm, I might get the extra story DLC when it's on sale and I'm on NG+. Maybe the demons as well. The rest I'll skip.
i honestly dont mind DLC anymore.. Im just used to it now. As long as the game isnt severely damaged by the lack of the DLC, I am okay with it
DLCs are bad business practices at the start. Free updates is the bigger insult to us.
@@therealjaystone2344 I mostly agree but micro transactions I think have shifted the entire dynamic moving forward. :/
yeah, that's how they get you. You get used to shit like this, maybe even support it, then they go deeper. I wonder if you will be fine when you will have to pay for every hour you play. No? Too bad, too late to go back now. Stop gaming? Well, thanks for destroying our passion and taking a leave.
When American companies do this shit:
Yeah I’m not buying this dumpster fire
When Japanese companies do this:
Oh GOD HOW FAR WILL YOU TEST ME!
SMT V ended it for me. I won't buy any of their games on launch again. And if it involves this kind of dlc practice, I'm not buying at all.
Same....
