Hi Rachel. Nice group of onion 🧅. When I go to the Supermarket to buy onions 🧅, I always find damaged ones. But I go for the white onions 🧅. I like them more. Thank you for sharing onions 🧅 with us. God Bless you Rachel. HUGS 🤗❤️. Mari'a. ❤️🤗❤️🤗❤️🤗👍👍👍👍👍🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅🧅
I get my onions from Dixondale, too. I put 38 pounds of chopped onions in the freezer, added some to canned soups... the most I ever grew. They will be great this winter in soups/stews and other dishes. I love my chopper, don't know how I survived 60 years without it.
Thank you for all of the advice surrounding onions! Had my best year yet because of your videos! Tip on the chopper noise (I have the same one), fold up a thicker hand towel a couple of times and place underneath the chopper. I feel it really helps dull the sound!
Great video. My onions were tiny but this was a brand new bed and I don't think the soil was prepped well enough. I cut them up and froze them and got about 2 gallons of ready to use onions. I was pretty happy with that!
Beautiful I'm so happy you did so amazing! We didn't get much was first yr trying Dixon Dale. Which was my fault got a late start and Browns Omaha was sold out. Lessons learned pay attention to time
I finally just pulled my onions. I had an awful harvest this year. Decided to not start my own seeds and ended up having a hard time finding the plants at multiple garden centres, even drove 2.5hrs and found nothing. Finally found a few containers. As I was harvesting I told myself I should have just taken it as a hint that it wasn't my year for onions. 😂 Maybe next time. 🤷♀️
This method of chopping with that gadget and freezing is BRILLIANT. I learned it on another of your wonderful videos about 2 years ago and it has made dinner prep so amazingly fast and simple on nights that I'm tired or busy or just plain don't want to do a lot of meal prep. It's a game changer!! Thanks Rachel!
Hi! I like watching your videos so thank you for sharing what you do in your homestead. Quite informational. I was drying my onions in the basement and I noticed the tops felt a bit soft. I decided to dehydrate them. Now, I have two big jars to last past winter hopefully. 🤞🏼
Hey Rachel.....I enjoyed this video....but missing the good old days of canning, canning canning.....I know you have a huge playlist of all the videos....honestly I have my canning recipes I use all the time, but your my "in the kitchen, canning buddy"....and I miss those videos. I know your a busy woman with your farm stand and all the grandkids...I get it....but hey if there is room for any videos, I would love to see what spin you are putting on canning..... I guess...I will just have to go to your playlist.....I do that lots in the winter.....it is just so cozy to have you playing while I work :) Hope all is well with all your family! ;)
In the deep south we start our onion seeds in September and grow the onions through winter. We have to plant short day onions which only stores for a few months, so I chop much of them up and freeze for future use., you gave me a great idea to vacuum seal them. They aren't all that good for eating raw after being frozen but are great for cooking. To get onions that will keep longer we have to buy onions grown in the northern states and shipped south.
I just brought in my onions yesterday and potatoes today. I started seeds in fall and first time bigger than a golf ball. Growing like garlic in fall. Not many seeds in a pack now. Need to get by the ounce now. I maybe got under one of your baskets overwintered. Separated what I think will be good seed potatoes and dehydrate about half. I probably got 40 to 50 pounds. Going to try making homemade fries too. I wonder how I can freeze them and use as fries later. Found fry recipes but nothing about storing in the freezer before. All my ideas I can never find in books or online.
I had a great harvest this year and they are almost cured :) I planted the bulbs this year as always and always get a good result. I've never seen the starts you order local, but I will look. I still have bunch in freezer from last year. (don't know how!!! WE LOVE ONIONS!)
I had a lousy onion harvest this year. I think it was the heat. I wasn’t satisfied with the starts I got from DixonDale either. I get their mixed bundle of red, white and yellow onions. The reds were very small and most didn’t make it. I felt they scraped up the bottom of the barrel to send me. This was the first year I got subpar stock from them. They usually are very good.
This is not onion related, but I had to tell you we are getting an abundance of eggs now this is our first year with chickens and I looked up how to pickle eggs and found your video so thank you for that☺️
I grew the Dixondale Long Day Sampler again, Walla Walla, Redwing, and Ringmaster. They did really well last year. I got them in mid April. This year I got them in June 1st. They were small! I see the Pattersons they sell. I think you grew Sterling before. “Growfully with Jenna” had some huge Alisa Craig ones this year. See her “July Vegetable Garden Tour- Ohio 2024 video. I might try those next time. My preference is sweet onions.
Hi from nearby Minnesota! I really enjoy your channel (and i am curious why "1870" so hopefully there's a video explaining that...otherwise...content idea for ya!) I am really glad you're doing this because I want to start a garden next year and it does seem like SUCH a short growing season here in zone 4. Thanks for giving a tip about how you purchase your onions bc i haven't had luck with onion sets either and i don't think i want to start them from seed either. Keep up the good work!!
I've grown onions from starts and from seed. I had better results growing them from seed. This year's harvest was the best yet. They are curing now and when the tops are dry I will store them in the basement.
I have had challenges growing onions from seed so wanted to the try slips but cannot find a source! I am located in Southern Ontario, Canada. Are onion slips referred to as something else? Please send me the website of where you get the long day slip and I can reach out to them for a Canadian source. Thank you
Love Dixondale! I purchase my onion starts from them too

I have never had any luck with onion starts I have always had success with starting my onions by seed
Just the opposite of you.
Thanks for sharing
On your recommendation I ordered my onion slips from dixondale farms. Best harvest ever. I will try the Patterson next year.

I had never heard of planting onion slips, I have terrible luck with onions. I will look for slips in the spring, thanks.
Wow that is fantastic! I can’t store onions because they rot quickly. I chop and freeze or dehydrate.

Great onion harvest.😮
Great tips on sorting and preserving the onions! Blessings Kiddo!🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕

Thanks Rachel. I'll be checking out your earlier videos. Your onion harvest is gigantic. Awesome.

Next video, is a canning video 😬
absolutely beautiful onion harvest! Gorgeous!!!!
We freeze dried all of ours so convenient
A fan on low works great for consistent air flow on those items that need it.
The wild grapes make the best jelly ever.

I have that exact same chopper. It's called The Vidalia chop wizard.

Our homestead was supposedly originally established back in the 1870's. 1876 is what we've been told.
I have the same chopper. Love it!

How’s your wheat doing? Honey Trail Farm is giving out grain mills. Not sure if you have seed heads and you have grain to harvest.
How do you handle onions w/out your eyes burning & tearing up ? 💞🌻🦋
A mandolin is amazing for onions
I find my reds last the longest..I think I have red river or something like that. Patterson’s last the next longest...I use my whites first.
We actually caramelized most of our onions and froze the others. We don’t have storage options
What would you suggest to do with the red onions? I got a good crop of them this year.
How much space did you need to grow that much?
Basically two 4x8 raised beds

1st 😃😂👍🏻
Storing garlic in the freezer is the same way, even if you double bag it.
Did I miss it? How are you not crying? Chopping onions stings so much
Dont store them in your butter freezer!
