    If you remove the dummy blank cast weight inside the Black 5, you can install an X04 motor and worm to covert it to teh originally intended loco drive. I did this to mine with an Airfix 5 pole motor back in the late 1970's.

    As I'm getting on in years now I'm in my 70s, sometimes I cant remember what day it is! I've a large collection of locos and when I do any running or servicing I either write the date and details in a notebook or a little slip of paper in the box.

    I'm fairly young I'd like to say and I'm thinking of getting into model railways and my great grandfather handed my mother down a BR black princess victoria, it hadn't been run since he died which was about 30 years ago so I set up some track, turned on the power, and it sprung straight into life! Truly great quality!

    The Trian Princess was based on a set they made for Marks & Spencer. It was one of the most popular train sets ever as it was very affordable on pocket money. It had one loco and three very short BRMK1s but the plastic was prone to distorting and warping after very little time. The Triang version was more robust. The first generation Princess had no valve gear - the second one did likes yours here

I have found my (dare say im far from alone) model collection growing rather rapidly myself during this time, i had only just gotten back into the hobby early this year, at least i picked a good time. Just wish we could buy blooming decoders here atm, i got a new loco the other week but no decoder and i don't even have a DC controller :( I only model local (Victorian , Australian) stuff but still love looking at English rolling stock.

    A perfect way to start off a Sunday morning after a long nights work! As good as it operates I’d take the Thomas chassis and maybe run it without the current body but just the hookups, chassis and a small camera for some footage from the model’s point of view as it goes around. I hope you can setup a smaller diorama at your house for the next video with what you have on hand, would make a great video. Thanks for sharing this with us!

    I only had a few bits as a child, and have just got back into model railways aged 38. Unfortunately the few things I had as a child are long gone. The one locomotive I remember is a Hornby 57xx GWR pannier tank circa 1976-ish that I think I got from my granddad that had a lot of sentimental value (my granddad is still alive: I just really liked the train). Just picked an identical one up on eBay. Turns out they made hundreds of thousands of them and they've all kept very well.

    Ik have a Marklin HO class V-200 diesel from the German DB. It was build in 1966 which make him older then i am. Put him on analog track and there she go, a bit noisy but it ran and ran good. The loco was not used for 25 years.
    I took the whole loco apart, cleaned him, cleaned the motor, give it a set of new carbon brushes and mid-rail pickup (still available from Marklin!), give it new oil and grease and ran it again. This time also perfectly slow speeds as far as this is possible with a 3 pole AC motor, and had a lot less noise.
    So i took it apart again and digitalized it with a Simple Marklin first generation 6080 Delta decoder. Now it run as a '60's survivor with his 12 original all metal D-train coaches (24cm each) on the club lay out. And he pulls it with one hand in his pocket, and the other one giving a hi five.
    But it must be said that back at the time, Marklin was a very expensive brand. But looking back, with a simple maintenance and decoder it can still run at modern day digital lay outs it was money well spend, however the previous owner sadly not lived to see his loco run again on modern tracks.

    36:30 The Lima and old Hornby stock have bogies that clip into a bogie-sized hole in the underframe to accommodate the motor. Unfortunately, over time this becomes stiff and hence derails at 36:30. Newer models have the bogies hung from a pin in the chassis rather than clipped in. A dab of oil or vaseline can do the trick

    R.50 Princes Elizabeth, in BR black, was Rovex's first locomotive in 1950. I own 3 of them. It featured plastic wheels, plunger pick ups, Mk.I non--reversible coupling and a Zenith motor that later became known as the X01. The trainset it came in featured brass railed non-reversible track (Series 0) and two R.20 carriages plus a battery controller that used a pair of 6 volt lantern batteries (which are still available today).
    The 1950 R.50 runs fine without issues on modern Peco Streamline track as the plastic wheels don't have the later coarse scale deep flanges. The only track it won't run on is the original fishplateless Series 0 brass railed and Series 1 steel railed track, which modern Hornby 0-4-0 & 0-6-0 locos will happily run on.
    In 1951 Triang was invited to take over Rovex and the brand was known as Triang Railways, The brand name was changed to Triang Hornby in 1965, then Hornby Railways in 1973 and finally Hornby in the 1990's.However the company is still the original Rovex underneath.
    The green Princess is R.53.

    Bit late here but my initial thoughts on the misbehaving Bachman are to carefully check the linkage for any bent parts. I've had locomotives where a slightly bent bit of linkage caused a seemingly unjust amount of trouble. Also, can't recommend enough that you give everything a good service- my experience with model trains is that old grease tends to gum up mechanisms, making the motor work harder and overheat. This can lead to a burnt out motor, which is never fun. The other thing of course, is dirty wheels and contacts. I have a friend who bought a really nice quality model of an EMD F3 A/B, but it wouldn't run, and he never took it to get fixed. I had a look at it for him, and after a thorough cleaning of all the contacts, wheels, and fresh lube, it was able to show its true colors again.. very well built loco, runs smooth and near silent! It's shocking how much difference a good service can do. Loving the "little loco" series Lawrie!!!

    very interesting, although I wasn't too surprised that the Triang Princess Elizabeth worked as well as it did. could be because a few years ago I got a diesel shunter out of a box after years of not using it. I expected it to before even putting it on the track. I also had a Triang Flying Scotsman running after it spent 15+ years on a shelf collecting dust as it suffered some heavy damage (not by me) mostly to the tender, which i got a replacement shell from Ebay. I also have a Tender drive Flying Scotsman which was the replacement for the Triang one. although these I did give a very basic clean before running. This was when I got the Tornado set three years ago in the Christmas sales.

    I have noticed that the Bacmann B1 with the split chassis does not like running backwards, also a strip-down of the chassis might reveal why it is running badly although be warned as you may need some superglue it the wheels are loose. The wheel centers (spokes) are a plastic inlay on the wheels and the can swell over time and this can cause poor running as well, but one you have sorted the problems you will end up with a nice loco

      I'd recommend an H&M Clipper or Duette (twin track version). They work very well with everything made over the last 70 years or so and the later ones have high/low resistance control and half wave settings which means you can get good low speed control. They are built like tanks, my Duette is still going since it came with my first train set in about 1970! When my more recent Gaugemaster gave up on me after about 10 yes I replaced it with another Duette. I think it only cost me about £15 on Ebay (though it was maybe 6 or 7 years ago) and even came in its original box. They are still quite easy to find on ebay and generally not very expensive. Avoid the HM2000 which looks like a more modern version of the Duette. I bought one expecting the same thing but was very disappointed with it. Hornby bought out H&M to get the brand so the HM2000 isn't actually an H&M controller at all.

    Normally, I wouldn't comment, but I thought this was appropriate.
    Hello, Mr. Lawrie sir! As a American modeling British locomotives, and you now owning a British diesel, I admire you for your hard work and immensely dedicated lifestyle.
    However, admiration is not reason I am commenting.
    It is about your little model based on Thomas.
    Now, I am a IMMENSE fan of the Railway Series and Thomas himself. With your intrest in the the shunter, I thought I would point in the direction of an individual called Sparkshot, or @KnucklesSCC on Twitter. He has for years been building beautiful 3D printed shells, not just for models based on the Reverands illustrations, but real locomotive's as well. His current project is a model designed for the chassis of the shunter. I will put a link to the project down below.
    Cheers, and have a nice day.

    Number two you’re going to have to make lunch oil and possibly replace The brushes !
    Once you get everything cleaned up Bloomberg paid properly and electrically running correctly you got yourself something to start layout with ! But take it one day at a time and try to absorb it, One day at a time ! 🌊🐺

    Never heard of a tender drive loco, im guessing its a result of "well, even with the slightly out of scale stuff we did to get OO from HO to make models of those tiny firebox locos we still dont have space fer a motor" then.
    Or I might just have never ran across any here on the 'murican side of the pond

    • @StandardGoose
      @StandardGoose 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're rare, and they often perform very poorly in part because the tender just isn't heavy enough to give decent traction.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very common over here. There was a period 90's - early 2000's hornby tender locos were all tender driver.
      It was for the ring field motor, and though weighted, wasn't good, and with nothing driving the wheels of the Loco they could slip and slow down.
