Tough Mudder To Dump Shorter Distance Events

  • Tough Mudder is going back to the original distance of 10 plus miles and at least 30 obstacles.
They will no longer be producing the 5K, 10K or 15K distances.
You sign up for a Tough Mudder, you run a Tough Mudder, period.
We speak to Giles Chater and Chris Maltbie about the changes that will begin in 2024.

This is great in my opinion. I was SO disappointed in the recent Spartan changes that I lost the desire to train for them. So after 10 years of Spartans, with 5 trifectas, I have not signed up for one this year. I did my first TM at age 56 in 2012 and it was something to train for and be proud of. Last year was my 10th TM which was my original goal at that time. I am now 67 and this gives me a new desire to train again. Thanks!

Sad day for those of us who love doing Tough Mudder and are not able to do 10+ miles due to physical or mental issues and are too proud to have a support team to help them. I can walk 10+ miles, just not sure if can do obstacles also. Don't want to have to go somewhere else. Love volunteering and competing at my level. Like I said, sad news to those who do their best and spend there money on the brand to get slapped in the face and abandoned by a race they grown to love.

I felt like I was late to the party with Tough Mudder. I started in 2017 and haven't stopped going. I flippin love this! I miss the Half and Full. Hell yeah! A single format of just 10+ miles. Perfect! At St. Louis there were ramping of difficultly in the obstacles which I was so happy for. My friend asked me this year how long was your longest mudder. I told him about 12 miles.

I see lots of lost business from this by dropping the 5k. 10+ miles is a huge barrier to entry for a newbie. Works great for me but not for everyone.

Back in the day (pre 5k), TM had no issue getting 8-10k people on a Saturday with a single format. Maybe the idea is make it tougher / longer to make it a more aspirational goal.

@Bobb Bobb I get the idea and it doesn't matter to me I'm signed up for 2 15ks this year so doesn't impact me in the slightest. But I see it impacting lots of newcomers

There is so much I want to say on this, but would just take to much time. I am EXTREMELY happy to hear these changes!!!!! I was on course to call 2023 my final year as I was so disgusted by what TM has become... great obstacles made boring, 5K,10K, 15K Bullshit. TM is supposed to be 10 + miles that should push you to your limits, and then when you cross the finish you are rewarded with that sense of great accomplishment that leads you to feel what Sean makes you think you will feel during his start line speech. Will I be back in 2024? Guess that depends on what I see over the next 10 months.

Giles was at Atlanta a few weeks ago and I proposed a Spartan / TM combo event at Snowmass. Didn't get off to a good start as Giles asked "What's Snowmass?" but I explained the problem and proposed solution to him. Anyway, let's keep evangelizing this idea.

This definitely is going to make Tough Mudder unattainable by many. I had friends who were training to be able to do the 5k next year. Guess they'll either go elsewhere (Rugged Maniac) or just not get a chance to try and OCR.

My first ever TM was in 2015, before the introduction of the Half.
It was 11.5 miles round some of the hilliest (over 950 feet elevation iirc) terrain that Yorkshire has to offer.
None of us were runners, and still aren't, but I completed it with my team. We worked hard both in the gym beforehand and on the course itself, and we smashed our targets.
It's not about being unattainable, it's about being a challenge. Anything is attainable if you want it enough.

I have only done the TM Classic 10 mile distance. My first Toughest will be in Pittsburgh this year. I love that they are going back to their roots but they may take an initial hit financially at first but as a Tough Mudder Community we need to get people there! Challenge with love🤘🏽

My first race was the Houston TM in 2013. I stopped TM when they switched to the different formats. Only because it caused confusion on which routes to take. I will be there for the 10 mile TM for sure.

For those all pumped for only a 15k, the loss of revenue from the 5k & 10k will be felt. This is a topic that is not really addressed in this video. This will be less revenue for the production and for salaries for the company as a whole. Volunteers who invest their time to maybe run a free 5k/10k will nolonger commit their free time. Sponsors who commit their resources to have their brand seen by a wider population, may be hessitant to commit to the event that will have far less participation.

  • @soundlycreative

Not know how their other events have gone - I can only speak to the ATL event where I attended both days.
I think this is a mistake. Soooooo many people were there testing out the 5k. However, it should be 5k and then the full 15k each day. Many people need that gateway, and the 10k was a lame middle distance ;)

Good call. For those who want 5k, there is Spartan. Bring tough mudder back to the unapologetic format that held the standard for what a TM race used to mean. Also bring back the signs that poked fun at the other races and added humor to the course.

  • @LewisSkinner
    @LewisSkinner ปีที่แล้ว +2

Personally, I think that this is a great idea. I started out in 2015 on an 11.5 mi course, and kept coming back for more!
My main question would be: where is the provision for young teenagers?
Even the Great North Run (a flat road race) requires runners to be 16 years of age on the event day for the 10 mile and 17 for the Half Marathon. Are TM going to let 15 year olds run a 10mi off-road "terrifying" obstacle course? Or push them back into Lidl Mudder with the 5 year olds? What about the 15 year old who this year, as a 15 year old, ran the 10k? What are we saying to her?

This is great news for me. I don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars in entry fees, food, clothes, etc., just to have an easy run most people can do. I want people to hear I did a Tough Mudder and be surprised.
That being said, the 5k is a great way to get people involved and potentially shoot for the harder version of the Tough Mudder.
Getting rid of the “fun run” concept is what it’s needed. Leave that for the other companies. There should be a sense of dread and anxiety when you hear the words, “Tough Mudder”.
