- In this video I take a look at various products from #pentips pen.tips/ to see if any of them work well for me when drawing and painting on the #iPadpro with #procreate and #artset

I’ve got the ones that just slip over the normal tip and love them so far. Great at slowing down the stylus so it’s not so wily nilly. I can’t image not using them now.
Yes, they certainly improve the feel. The only thing I found was that they felt a little bit chunky for drawing or fine detail, fine for painting though. I am currently using a Norris Digital Jumbo on the Samsung Tab s9 ultra with the Samsung removable screen protector. It has a really good fine tip and feels very much like pen/pencil in terms of control. Drawing on glass is way too shiny so anything that helps is a big improvement though.
@@BasementPicasso luckily I scribble my drawings so the lack of fine detail actually works in my favor!
I wore through my first PenTip 2 with just a couple hours of use as well.
Yeah, I think this is why they are now selling hard and soft versions
@@BasementPicasso I guess I should look into trying the harder ones.
@@andystandys I am going to do a quick update video on that soon
@@BasementPicasso Awesome. I will wait to watch that video.
Hello, thank you very much for your very helpful video! How stable is the PenMat, can I take notes with it, for example at university, without it shifting? Can the mat and a protective cover be used simultaneously?
Yes, should be fine for taking notes. Should be ok with a cover. I have a 3rd party keyboard cover and that closes and holds ok. The magnetic strips on the mat are slightly thicker than a regular screen protector, but shouldn’t be thick enough to cause an issue. Thanks for the feedback, and hope that helps.
Thanks for the helpful video. Do you have an update on how long the original Apple pen tip lasts when combined with the magnetic screen protector?
You are welcome. I don't use the iPad a lot, but my sense is that it is about the same as a paperlike, maybe very slightly more wearing. I would expect pretty good mileage out of a pack of 3 standard iPad tips on this. Hope that helps :-)
I'm surprised your review is the first one to mention about it wearing out so fast, and from the comments here that seems to be a common issue too to be a 1%. Not even other un-sponsored reviews mentioned this. That's a bummer especially given the price of the tips that are way higher than similar ones you see in AliExpress.
I will do an update video shortly. The good news is that the new ones have NOT worn out yet. The bad news is they feel very slightly more rubbery and grippy and I don't like the feel of them. I still use and prefer the standard apple pencil tip combined with the Pen Tips magnetic screen protector. Best of both worlds for me.
@@BasementPicasso the new ones you bought are the PenTips 2 harder version? I’m just planning on buying those for both drawing and taking notes😥
@@foooddriven It didn't say. The option for Soft / Hard is new since I did the original review. I suspect I have te hard ones this time round as the feel is different & they haven't worn out.
thanks Pete, very cool
You are welcome
Great video mate, thanks.
Thanks Lee, much appreciated.
Hey which screen protector do you use??
I am using the Pen Tips magnetic screen protector. It is very good & you can easily and quickly remove it if you want to watch a video etc. It is very good to draw on
I received my Pen tips 2 a few days ago after only five minutes of use I noticed shiny silver metal showing at the very tip scratching against my screen. Would not recommend to anyone.
Sorry to hear that! They are sending me a replacement set so I will test them to see if they were a 1% defect or if it is a repeatable.problem.
Same thing happened to mine. Ended up just getting a refund. I’ll wait a few months to try again. Waiting for the bad initial batches to get removed
Same here over 1 and a half months to receive and 2 of the 3 wore through within a day each
Happened to me too. It wore out after a few days. Still waiting for the replacement
Did you say Art Package is the paint app you were using? Never heard of it and can’t find it.
It is called "Art Set" by LOFOPI. see apps.apple.com/gb/app/art-set/id469918702 only available on iPad not on PC.
@@BasementPicasso Thanks so much!
Hii. Can the magnetic screen cover be placed over a tempered glass cover. Are the magnets strong enough to hold? Does it affect the drawing experience?
Apologies - not something I have to test. The magnets are reasonably strong so might work, but you would get more parallax with two protectors. It might work, but I can't say for sure.
@@BasementPicasso thanks for a prompt reply 😀
Real nice review, thanks 😊
Thanks for watching! Appreciated
Same with the pentips2, not event a few hours, I would say less than an hour! 2 out of 3, I guess it will be the same with the 3rd one!
I didn't even try the third one. I am still trying out the replacements & will post an update shortly
Hi! im interested to know how is the apple pen tip holding with the magnetic screen protector.
Hello - I haven’t had any issues - it works really well. I can’t speak to long term wear & tear, but given apple tips are reasonably cheap I am happy to replace them if they do wear out. It is the combination I am using now & very happy with it. Hope that helps
Great video! Was just curious if the magnetic matte screen protector added a considerable amount of diagonal line wobble when drawing slowly? Thanks!
Very interesting question. So it turns out my hand-drawn diagonal lines are shocking at the best of times! To answer your question - slow diagonals are easier & therefore straighter when hand-drawn using the protector (for me). Using a straight edge with the protector there is a very small wobble to very slowly drawn straight lines when compared to no screen protector, but if you draw it at a medium or fast pace it is near perfectly straight. Hope that helps :-)
I just ordered some pen tips because I didn't know about this option, haha. Oh well.
What app is that you're painting with? It looks great.
On the iPad I use something called “Art set”. It has a really good palette knife tool and some other quite realistic natural media tools. worth a look
@@BasementPicasso Thank you!
Very useful! Ty!!!
You are very welcome.
Welp, I don’t know what screen protector to use.
If you are happy with a permanent protector (and the very slight fuzziness of the screen) the paperlike worked well for me for years. I will be using the pen tips magnetic going forward though, so I have a sharp clear screen for video and text and then only use the protector when I am actually drawing.
Thanks for the tip
No problem!
Have you tried the tips from ifeli? They're like PenTips 2, but far cheaper here in UK, only costing £12.99 for a box of 4 tips compared to £35.00 for PenTips 2.
I haven't tried those, no. Doing a quick search they appear to be pen tip covers (which is the equivalent of the pen tips lite) rather than the pen tips 2 which are actual nib replacements. Pen tips lite seem to be £15 or so, which is a bit closer. I did try them & they were ok, but for me, not quite as good as a normal apple tip along with the magnetic screen protector. That is what I use on the iPad now.
Well done!
Thanks, much appreciated
Not sure I understand your ref to Procreate? What problem have you spotted?
Hi Pete, apologies, I think the title was not well worded & ambiguous. I have clarified it. It is Pen Tips that has a potential problem, not procreate. Hopefully, that is clearer from the title now ...
Very good video👍
Thank you 👍
10:25 Unbelievable! I purchased the original Pen Tips and never used it because I can't sketch precise and shade quickly when the tip is on. And the pressure is much lower. It just slows me down in my work. I thought they fixed it with Pen Tips 2, but it got worse... I am very disappointed. Especially it costs 50 euros + shipping, probably around 70-80 euros outside of the EU.
Agreed. I am currently testing out the replacement PenTips 2 they sent, and while they seem more resilient, I don't like the feel of them. Too rubbery and grippy for sketching for my style
@@BasementPicasso how is this one for writing and is it also getting wear out easily?
Wore out my all 3 of pentips 2 within an hour.. using the screen matte or without. I was sent replacements and also wore all those out after an hour of some light sketching and shading. I don’t believe the “1%” failure rate. Or I must be super unlucky to get two sets in a row that were garbage. Now that I’m requesting a refund I’m not hearing back from customer support.. stay away from this product!
Ouch. I haven't had a chance to fully test the new ones yet. they do seem a bit more resilient so far, but I am not keen on the feel of them anyway. The magnetic matte protector they do is much better and what I use for sketching on the ipad now
@@BasementPicasso they just got back to me today and are indeed processing my refund which is good news. I imagine there are a lot of emails coming in with unhappy people and worn tips. I looked at their website again and it seems there’s a pre order for a “hard” version for “writers”. It seems like that might be the better option if you want a tip that might last a little bit longer. Seriously all I was doing was some quick shading (as you would with a pencil sketch) and they wore out so fast. I can’t believe they were “defective” but rather a flawed design from the onset. Perhaps the harder versions will fair better but I’m not going to find out. I’ll just stick with the regular apple tip and glass for now. If I see promising reviews for the hard versions I might give them a try.
Mine also lasted less than two hours.
Not good. I am awaiting delivery of replacements to re-test. Will see how they get on
Don’t buy these! The Pen Tips 2 took 2 months to ship, and less than a month into owning them, 2 out of 3 of them are dead. One of them rubbed down to the metal without my realizing, and scratched the screen of my iPad. Definitely do not recommend!
Sorry to hear that. They have claimed a 1% failure rate - and are sending me a replacement set, so I will re-test when I get them, but not good if they end up damaging the screen!
I bought the pen tips 2 and same thing. A few hours´ worth of drawing and they fall apart. I feel I´ve been had. Don´t buy it.. not worth it...
Sorry to hear that - I am still waiting for my replacement to test if it is really a 1% failure rate as they claim.
I am so disappointed, I bought these from their Kickstarter and had not had time to use them till last night. I went through a tip in 4 hours and had to get a new tip to finish my drawing. This is completely unacceptable. I put in a ticket, will see their response and update my comment.
Yeah, I don't think the "soft" version of PenTips 2 is durable enough. I have just done an update video based on the new "hard" version of the tip
@@BasementPicasso Thanks for the update, the company has been responsive, and will be sending a replacement set. Will see if those fare better.
After wait 3 months for delivery in my country I use one unity of Pen Tip 2 for just 3 days…😒
Sorry to hear that - I am guessing that was the soft type. Yes i found shipping very slow too! frustrating.
