Replace rear axle seal on a Dodge Ram

  • This is a step by step video showing how I replaced the left rear axle seal on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4. The rear axle shown is the very popular Chrysler 9.25" model, with a classical 'stop sign' shaped cover plate and 12 mounting bolts. This repair was necessary because of a small leak of axle fluid onto the inner brake structure on that side.
    Axle seal leaks are sometimes associated with a blocked vent tube, which causes a buildup of air pressure within the axle on a hot day, and secondary axle leaks. So, at some time during the repair you should check the vent tube of the axle to be sure it is patent.
    This video is made for entertainment purposes and is not to be construed as an instruction guide. I am not a professional mechanic so you should bear in mind that a professional might have accomplished this task very differently. If you need advice regarding how to repair your vehicle, you should consult a qualified professional. Remember also to take all appropriate safety precautions, certainly use safety glasses, and remember to carefully test your brakes after any vehicle repair. If you attempt to repair your vehicle, then you do so at your own risk.

    Extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post. Same seals started to go recently on my 2001 Ram Van 1500 and I wasn't how to pull the axles until I found this video. Nothing's better than seeing it in a recording. Much appreciated.

    Funny you suggested that. Indeed, when I reviewed the video later I thought, too bad I didn't mention that the clips fall loose when you push the shaft medially. It's hard to add in audio later and I was hoping somebody would bring that up as a discussion point. So, it's great that you added the suggestion in the comments! I, and everybody who reads this, will be happy you said that.

    man, you had videos on servicing the rear main seal and rear end for dodge truck. I watched those videos a couple times over. really insightful. Ive procrastinated on tackling my rear end as long as I could and now, yours were the videos I thought of for DIY. Im out of options and not yet got the mechanic money. Real shame I should have downloaded them lol. You do good work and I appreciated the disclaimers in your intros.

      Thanks, man. The bar for repair videos is rising every day, and now there are many more options than even a few years ago. Recently Ericthecarguy did one on rebuilding the GM diff, nicely showing how to check for backlash, adjust shim depth, and set preload on the pinion bearing. Good luck!

    You might read the other comments, one of them suggesting replacing both sides at once so you don't have to do this again. Remember if you have a limited slip diff then you would need a friction modifier -- dealer can tell you from the VIN if there is no tag on the rear diff. Thanks for your comment.

    One C clip for each side. When you expose the C clip and have that short steel shaft removed, then kneel facing where the tire would be and push the hub straight inward. That takes a little tension off the C clip and it will drop out more easily.

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! If I were to do this video again I would emphasize that the C-clip is pinched by a lip on the end of the axle, so just before you try to remove it, slide the whole axle medially and the C-clip will be released.

      How did your repair go? Did anything fall out of place?

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure. Does it look the same as mine? You may find some markings on the axle that identify it. If you own the vehicle I would find a manual, preferably a dealers manual that will help with repairs. Online pdf editions on ebay are sometimes a better deal.

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've not seen that before but the first thing I would check would be the diff fluid level and quality. I can't see a bad axle seal causing this but low fluid from a bad seal could cause general breakdown. That sound serious, I would check it out right away, with close attention to the spider assembly. By the way, we share the same last name, maybe we are related (grin). Dave

    READ: EASY SEAL REMOVAL TRICK-
    You can remove all but the last couple inches of these axle shafts inside the tube. Then take a couple steps over to angle your axle shaft so your axle tip catches your seal to remove it.
    Trick here is use your axle shafts C-clip groove to catch your old seal (Bearing needs actual Puller).
    After doing this a few times you can pull your axle & seal out all in one quick step. This works on 8.25 diffs too.
    Its much easier & faster than beating its seals out so give it a shot!
    Peace

      I tried removing the seal with a seal puller. It did not work. The rubber came out and the spring but the metal did not. I eventually bought a 24in pry bar at Harbor Freight. It literally took 30 seconds for that seal to come out.

    Technical Materials Question: RTV "Blue" or Permatex's RTV "Black?" Is the marketed "additional oil-resistance" worth keeping both on the shelf, or have you had success with what you used in this video? Thanks!

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent point. I used what I had on hand, but as you say black is said to be better. Blue worked fine here. I have a feeling that the putative difference between the professional grey product and what one can buy off the retail shelf is fairly minimal. As with many tools, I believe it's more the skill set of the user rather than than the brand. Anybody who uses too much, puts too much near the inside gap, or fails to allow it to set a little before cranking down the bolts is likely to get RTV into places it doesn't belong, like the screen of an oil pickup.

    Do you happen to know the part number or size of the seal? I am having a heck of a time finding a seal that will fit. When I go to the official dodge website it gives me a seal but the outside diameter is to small. Great video though. Thanks.

      I let my parts guys at NAPA solve that problem for me, I didn't use an OEM seal. If the part number is not in the video or video description, it is lost now. The one mistake I made here was not doing both (L&R) at the same time. I had to go back in last year and fix the other side. I did a video of that one too, which ended up being the first of a two part video showing how to fix the limited slip differential. Good luck!

      @@spelunkerd I ended up going to a dealership and paying dealership prices for the seals and they did in fact fit.

    What would it be if it was brake fluid leaking from that exact wheel drum like you are showing? Mine just started leaking and it is coming out fast

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brake fluid there suggests the seal on the wheel cylinder is probably leaking, a problem that needs to be fixed right away. I would take off the wheel and drum and see where the leak is coming from. Peel back the boot on the wheel cylinder, if there is wetness there, then the diagnosis is obvious. If you get to it quickly you can avoid contamination of the shoes, but if not then you need to replace them, too. Replacing a wheel cylinder is easy, and if you have the same vehicle a wheel cylinder for the back is less than $20. I did a video of how to do that, but the reason was for a broken bleeder screw so the title is -misleading- different. Go to my channel and search 'broken bleeder screw repair'. Good luck!

    Hi I just bought an old Dodge ram v6 van 1500(98). I am happy for the most part with the prefomance of the car. But I do not feel safe at all in the snow. Whenever there is a slight hill on the road when snowing- I can feel the vans right rear wheel pulling to the right. The back end spins out of place and the tires start to slip. Plus the ABS & break light are always on. Otherwise I feel it drives okay for what I paid for it. I was wondering if you have any suggestion about where I should start to deal with this problem becaase it can be very dangerous if not taken care of.

      With the asymmetry I suspect you may have a seized caliper or drum on the right side, which could be interfering with fuel consumption and of course braking or acceleration. You can sometimes pick that up with a laser thermometer, pointed at the disc or drum on each wheel, showing extra heat on the side with the seized caliper. A bad tire alone should not give the warning light. With the ABS light on it may be more advanced than you care to tackle, and it's not easy to learn all of this at once and then do a safe repair. The ABS diagnosis could be as simple as a bad wheel sensor, which would be another common problem, but it might also be a consequence of a seized caliper. Diagnostic ABS codes may be helpful, but you often need more than a simple OBDII generic scanner to see those. Are you sure the parking brake is completely disengaged? Ya, get it fixed right away.

      Yes I am pretty sure the parking break is disengaged. Based on your discription I feel that you might be on to something about the seized caliber. I will l have to get a diagnoses from a shop to see what's going on before I decided if it's something I can tackle. Thank you for responding and your explanation.

    Would the right side axle be the same way to remove and reinstall?? I have a 2002 dodge Durango, the right side axle snapped off in a accident.

      Yes, very similar.

    I have a question about this I assume this would be the same for a 99 Durango, but my question is, do I need a puller to change the bearing or should it come out somewhat easy.

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, to get the rear bearing out you need a puller, which you can rent or buy fairly easily. Yesterday I watched the best video showing a roadside rear axle rebuild for this vehicle that I've ever seen. Midway through he shows how that bearing comes out. Here's the vid
      th-cam.com/video/cWeSuZ3DEok/w-d-xo.html As he mentions, it's not common for that specific bearing to go bad, and you may be facing the much more common problem of a pinion bearing failure. Good luck!

    Is the same for Dodge SRT 10 Ram Viper rear axle left?
    Btw nice job!

      I suspect newer models have switched to rear disc brakes, and the newest axles are very different. As with any repair, it's wise to consult a dealer repair manual for more specifics for your vehicle. I use alldatadiy, but mitchell is also said to be good.
