You are probably the only one who responds to this song in the whole internet. As a Chinese rock&metal lover, I really appreciate this. This band’s name is actually ‘Omnipotent Youth Society’ in English. They became famous with their first album in 2010. The whole album was a huge explosion back then and they soon became countrywide well known around 2013-2016. This song is from their second album released in 2020. If you dive into the whole album, both first and second, you will be absolutely blown. They are literally the best music band in China ever.
This is easily my favorite song of all tjme and it’s not even close. As far as I know, Hebei Moqilin is about the “dark dragon” of pollution and industrialization of the Hebei Province in China, the birthplace of the band. I like to split the song into 3 acts: act 1 is the low key introduction that sets the scene, which I interpret as the sights of the city that the artists grew up seeing. That continues through the verse into the first chorus, after which act 2 begins, which features the motif that begins on the brass and woodwinds and subsequently shifts to the strings and clarinet. That feels like the city expanding with new ideas being introduced and played around with. Act 3 starts after the orchestral break leading into the dissonant idea of the second chorus. The tremendous growth of the area is such that the residents struggle to keep up with the change of scenery which is reflected flawlessly in the massive third act, as the listener gets lost in the overwhelming soundscape of the now unrecognizable city. Also, the odd meter motif in the chorus was 26 beats in total, being two bars of 5/4 followed by 4 bars of 4/4. Hope that helps and thanks so much for covering this behemoth🤘🤘🤘
I am so delighted to see this appear on your channel. This whole album is fantastic, and has been one of my favorites for a minute. Especially this track! Been following your stuff for just a little while so it's really exciting to see you react to something that is both relatively unknown/underrated despite being some really fantastic music. Genuinely one of my favorite songs of all time (:
This track's ending is literally not the "real ending" here. This album is actually a continuous song, with a total of over forty minutes, and is broken down into some pieces. This track is actually the second to last song on this album, and it's the climax of the entire album. If you use the last song of this album as the ending of this track, everything will make more sense. You won't feel it's too long when you treat this album as a whole thing. What's more, I really hope you could listen to this album from beginning to end. That would be an impressive journey. Thank you for reviewing this song! Really excellent job!
Incredible. I'm half way through and absolutely loving this so much! Mastery! Going to say it now... nearly finished, and perhaps this is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard, period! Thank You!!!
Four years after the album released, there are still many rock fans in China who are discussing and intoxicated by it. The background of the album may be more relatable to Chinese people, but I also believe that another function of such artworks are about deliever words cannot expressed things, things that will be lost in the translation process of some notes. The lyricist is a doctor of English and also writes poetry. The first half of the album is related to their journey ten years ago"They took a train through a mountain on the border of their hometown. When they walked on the back of the mountain, they saw a large area of damage caused by blasting and quarrying." the album。。 expression,on the one hand, is the advancement of industrialization for a better life, and on the other hand, it is also the plight of individual spirit under the development of science and technology. They expressed more helplessness through notes. The above is just my personal understanding, recommend you listen to the whole album.
This is a full concept album, try to listen the whole album once will get better understanding of it. It’s turely the best album for me so far,I love it more than the[ dark side of the moon ]
this sorta feels like the Chinese Mars Volta. Especially the epic crescendo at the end with the wild vocals and squealing stringed instrument parts. TMV usually slips in a part or two that feel more uncomfortable, and I didnt get any of that in this. This whole song felt like it really worked the entire time
It's from China if you care. They would apply melodies from traditional Chinese folk music and their lyrics heavily emphasize on how modern society affects and projects itself on Chinese youth. King Crimson is very popular and influential in both China and Japan, probably only second to Pink Floyd amongst the 70s prog scene.

i know a way while ago you reviewed Will Woods "The Normal Album", and id be wondering if you plan to listen to any of his other stuff. He recently released a remix of that album called "The New Normal!", if you're interested.
I don’t know where to recommend so I’ll do it here😅. I’d love if you could react to koi geba by atarashi gakko, they’re an eccentric j-pop group, I love koi geba and would love if you reacted😊

One more thing - the band’s name translates to Omnipotent Youth Society, that’s what it says on the album cover
Band = Wànnéng qīngnián lǚdiàn (All powerful youth inn) , song is Héběi Mò Qílín (The ink-water unicorn of Hebei province)
The popular and used translation for the bandname is "Omnipotent Youth Society". If you're looking for more, you want that.
@JVoidy Thank you, this helped. I was able to find them on Spotify by searching "Omnipotent Youth Society". They have 2 albums up there.

Fantastic selection! ON first impression it's prog post-rock which is a combination I've never heard, hope the rest of the music is actually similar
I think there's quite sone crossovers between prog and post rock. Oceansize for one.
that was so awesome.
yayyy I vaguely remember I recommended this long ago, or did I? Hahaha
This was super good....
Another really great band from China is Wang Wen! They are an instrumental post-rock band

It sounds like King Crimson, after taking the happy pills, moved to Japan and went native.

I was really hoping to hear Bryan pronounce the band and track title.
