You should also listen to Jimmy by Tool in the context of Maynard and his Mom and the process that lead into writing first this and later Wings for Marie & 10.000 days. Gahhh!!! This is so exciting. They don’t have as many albums as Tool, but each are worth every second of your ear (😀). Guitarist is Billy Howerdel, former Tool guitar tech. There’s not one song I don’t love from their albums as well. Hope the rabbit hole takes you through all of their albums and then on to Puscifer. Money Shot is a beautiful album. The entirety of Maynard’s projects are mind blowing in case Tool hasn’t made your brain ooze your your nose enough.
This is actually Billy’s(the guitar player) project. Maynard wasn’t even the first idea as a vocalist. He initially wanted a female singer, but Maynard pushed to be in the band after hearing demos. Puscifer is Maynard’s (pretty much) solo project. The Puscifer song Horizons is the final song in the Maynard’s mom saga. Most overlook that track as being part of it. Maybe because they haven’t payed attention to the lyrical content.
In case anyone doesn't know, A Perfect Circle was (and is) a bit of a supergroup. For this album ('Mer De Noms')+ tour, the lineup was: - Billy Howerdel (Gtr/Vox) had worked as an engineer/tech for numerous bands (Faith No More, NIN, GnR, and TOOL, among others) - Maynard from TOOL - Troy Van Leeuwen (Gtr) had been in Failure (and is now in Queens Of The Stone Age) - Paz Lenchantin (Bass/Violin/Vox) went on to play with several bands post APC, and is now in the Pixies - Josh Freese (Drums) has recorded or played with EVERYONE as a session drummer or band member, including DEVO, The Vandals, NIN, Weezer, GnR, etc, etc... This may be an unpopular opinion but similar to Tool, there are no bad APC or Puscifer songs. I would be happy to see you react to any and every song of both bands! My suggestions to start though would be APC: The Outsider, The Package, The Noose, By and Down, and Orestes. Puscifer: The Remedy, Grand Canyon, The Humbling River, Autumn, and Mama Sed (Alive at Club Nokia).

Wow I just Saw Perfect Circle performance of THE OUTSIDER on Jay LENO- wow Maynard in a Spot light and amzing performance though music sounded thin rather than thick - thick like normal

On the surface it is rage against his mothers faith. underneath its also the serpent tempting adam and eve to eat the fruit. then as a suite its the rage part of the 5 stages of grief with wings 1 being acceptance and wings 2 being understanding.. only missing denial and bargaining

A Perfect Circle is a really great band. They got more experimental in later albums, and some of the songs in this first album are a little less standard. Most of the songs are named after someone, or feel like they're referencing a specific person. I think Maynard was trying to work through a few of his personal relationships. Being a young man starting college when this came out, alot of it really spoke to me. If you listen to more, you might understand a little why. From this first album, try out: "The Hollow" - Another standard sounding rock song "Orestes" - A truly haunting tune. "3 Libras" - My favorite from this album

YES! Hope this is just the beginning of your APC journey. I'm not super keen on the new album.....but, the first 2 albums are flawless. Not one bad song on either album. And each album is very different....very. The first is gothic and dark and heavy. The second is ethereal new-wave and emotionally resonant. Both albums are absolutely worth delving into!

You should react to the live performance of Judith on the Conan O’Brien show I believe it was the first televised appearance they ever did. Mind blowing performance if you get the vibe that television wasn’t ready for it
My parents are super religious and have always been physically and emotionally abusive. This song was already a favorite because it just struck a chord for me (sorry, stupid pun). But now my mother is dying of cancer, so this song is even closer to my heart. Can't help but scream sing along with this sometimes.

Welcome to APC. 🤘 They have soooooo many good tracks! You will not be disappointed. This track was an angry smite at God after what happened to Maynard's mother, Judith, who was a devout Christian.
Maynard James Keenan is the only tool member in the band, however, Billy Howerdel (bald guitarist in video,) was at some point their guitar tech. Howerdel wrote nearly all of the music for A Perfect Circle’s first album during that time. According to Loudwire’s “Wikipedia: Fact Of Fiction” video with Howerdel he talks about how Keenan stayed with him for a bit and it was then he showed the A Perfect Circle music to Keenan who offered to sing, up until that point Howerdel had hoped Cocteau Twins’ singer, Elizabeth Fraser, would front the project. As a Cocteau Twins fan I lament she hasn’t joined the band. Nonetheless, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that first A Perfect Circle record, “Mer De Noms.” It definitely does a disservice to that record to focus so much on Keenan’s involvement, especially since every musician on the album is quite prominent in their own regard-not directing any animosity toward you or anyone in particular, that’s how everyone has treated the band, (much like with Tool, Adam Jones, Danny Carey, & Justin Chancellor tend to write and record a ton of music together and then send it to Keenan for his input, but over the course of the last two Tool albums he has admittedly, I recall him talking about this on an old episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, taken more of a backseat in the creative process, and has found his place in the band’s balance.)
Yes just Maynard from Tool in APC. He let go a lot of this anger as his grief progressed and APC didn't perform this song live for a lot of years. For the 'Wings' songs he also said he would never do something like that again, just took too much out of him emotionally etc.
This came out back before social media, and Maynard wasnt big on interviews. There really wasn't a ton of footage of him around. These days he's mellowed a lot. He posts on his instagram account and he's done several 2+ hour interviews on Joe Rogans podcast.

Puscifer is Maynard's side project where he explores all his musical interests and eccentricities together with his trademark crass sense of humour Well worth checking Puscifer their second album is a masterpiece.
