      Hey Tom, I am interested in buying this product and the Canon R (based on your suggestions).
      If I record live video to TH-cam with the Canon R, and podcast audio with my Rode Pro, how do I sync the audio/video together? Would I have to use the SD card upload, and sync it within Adobe Premiere Pro?
      Your videos come out so nice/clear (even prior to your Rode Pro arrival)... so I'm wondering how to achieve that good clean audio/video. #PleaseHelp

  • @paulg3388

    Hi Tom, having watched a number of your Videos, one particular crucial piece is that you explain as part of your workflow, you save your Audio file from the Rodecaster Pro 2 to the Buzzsprout option which sets the LUFs to -16, then you simply upload it to Buzzsprout. I have tried this, but what I notice is that my Podcast Audio is still lower in volume than other popular Podcasts, including yours (I use yours as a reference loudness). I started using Adobe Audition, and took a flat WAV file out of the Rodecaster Pro 2 (instead of the Buzzsprout MP3) and then used the Match Loudness option in Audition again to -16 and it is STILL lower than all the other Podcasts out there (including yours). I must be missing something, but I am thinking it's helpful for your Audience to know why this is, as I am sure I am not the only one having this issue?! I have a music background, and use Waves LUFs meter all of the time and that always works perfectly to match my Music tracks to the loudness of everything else out there, but for Podcasts and with the guide being -16 LUFs, is there something I missing as to why my Audio is still too low? Your help is appreciated as always and I think like I say, this would be excellent information for anyone else on your Channel and this is my final step to get my Podcasts sounding right !

    Awesome video...I want a Rodecaster Pro as I believe you usually benefit based cost. This seems to be the undisputed winner. Am I nuit's to purchase this when I am not sure of a video channel or podcast theme? Fishing or general or what? Should I start with a maonocaster am100-k1? In any case awesome. I find it an amazing product.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. If you have basic equipment ot get started with, that's what I would stick with (a simple USB mic setup or something along those lines). IF you need to purchase gear from scratch and you're pretty sure that you'll be sticking with some form of podcasting/audio production, the RCP is the way to go.
      I would avoid buying a cheaper option only to end up buying the more expensive one later, as that will end up costing more money in the long run. Good luck!

    Three questions: 1- do you use multi track recording, or do you save the completed file without multi track? Given that you can control so much within the roadcaster pro, and that you are usually listening to the audio while you create it, I’ve been debating skipping the multi track for the sake of simplicity. 2- At the beginning of the video you took off a plastic cover from the top of the roadcaster. I glanced in the links, and didn’t see it. I’m sure you’ve mentioned it in another video, just not sure where to look. Where can I get one of those? 3- Since starting this comment I have found the answer to question number three… You already have a video on why you use anchor. I am going to watch that and see if you answer my questions about using that platform. SoundCloud is the only other one I’m considering, but watching you do your upload today and schedule it out, you might have me sold.
    Thanks for the great content. I’ll be back!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Buck Simple is often better. I think I’ll follow suit. It’s such a powerful system, there’s no reason why finished product should need much touch up/post production. From an audio engineer, you always want a multitrack if possible. I don’t know how robust these setups are with signal processing, but having an actual multitrack is 1000x better than dealing with a stereo mix, for many reasons.

    Enjoy the tutorials on the Rodecaster and I have a question in regards to how you treat the audio in post if at all.
    Do you, or anyone else feel free to add to this conversation, feel that it is necessary to normalize the audio tracks in, say in Audition or in any NLE?
    I'm curious about that because I feel that perhaps it's a step I may be missing.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have two answers for this one:
      1. Yes, I do think it's a good idea for getting the best quality
      2. I'm still learning the best way to do it, so I don't always normalize because I feel that my clips end up sounding worse afterwards. That's user error though.

    • @BreathingGuy20
      @BreathingGuy20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว

    Amazing videos - thanks for these. I have a Rodecaster Pro on order - can't wait to start using it! :)
    Out of interest - do you not find you need to edit the podcasts? I host a podcast, and the vast amount of time it costs me, is the editing. I heavily remove erms and errs (and 'you knows', 'I means', heavy breathing, clicks, lip smacks, etc) - and also tidy up guests (and myself) talking over each other (which happens a lot due to latency of remote recording). I'm certainly getting better over time, and not umming and erring myself - but for the guests, it differs wildly. I find that the quality of the podcast is night and day before vs after editing - so I really wouldn't want to not do this. From watching your videos, it sounds like you've nailed not umming and erring yourself - but how do you deal with it with your guests?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dan! Editing really depends. I think the show is typically improved if I do take the time to tighten it up in editing, but honestly, it also makes it a less sustainable process for me since I just don't have the time (but I will definitely spend more time editing with guests, especially if they're recording remotely, just to make sure everything sounds good and that they shine their best).
      A lot of it is also just time and practice. Things like learning mic technique to avoid clicks and smacks are just skills that can be developed. Being a teacher was also a huge help for me personally in terms of learning to talk for extended periods while desperately trying to hold the attention of people who would rather be anywhere else 😁

    • @danclarkeuk
      @danclarkeuk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tombuck Thanks for your super-quick reply! :) For learning mic technique - it's fine from my end (and my erms and errs are a lot less than they used to be). I've found that the biggest thing that helped me learn was is to be intentional in all speach (at work, chatting with my friends and family - literally ALL speech). When I was trying to stop umms and errs ONLY when I was doing a talk or podcast recording, that just didn't work. But when I practiced in all speech - that made a huge difference.
      However, no matter how good I become, that doesn't mean that the guest(s) are equally as practiced - so even if I never need to edit my own voice, I think I'll always need to edit the guests (it really depends on the guests' experience).
      As you say - it's balancing sustainability I guess. I only publish an episode once or twice a month for that very reason. It's on-top of my main job (albeit, related), and I have other commitments too, including family. So I just get up early. But I certainly couldn't do a higher release cadence without something else giving.
      But, back on topic - very excited about my Rodecaster Pro arriving! That's going to make a huge difference! Looking forward to being able to add music and sound effects in realtime :) Also, the mobile phone thing will be super-useful too! A big thanks again for all your useful videos on it :)

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I recently made a video about how to put together a good streaming setup, and there's A LOT of overlap between streaming and podcast setups, so it's probably a good place to start: th-cam.com/video/JK_Pw0lA0Ro/w-d-xo.html
      Multiple mics can definitely bleed into each other and it can be tricky to solve depending on your setup. Being as far away as possible is the easiest way to fix it, but also positioning the mics in a way that their pickup patterns don't overlap helps too. A lot of the time if you can keep the mics at 45 degree angles from each other, then each will be in the other's "blind spot".
