  • The Sapporo Snow Festival, known as "Sapporo Yuki Matsuri" in Japanese, is one of Japan's largest and most distinctive winter events. Held annually in February in Sapporo, the capital city of Hokkaido, this festival attracts over two million visitors from Japan and around the world. The event originally started in 1950 when local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. It has since grown into a spectacular festival featuring hundreds of snow and ice sculptures of various sizes, transforming the city into a winter wonderland.
    The festival spans about a week and is primarily held across three sites: Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsu Dome. Odori Park, the main site, is located in the heart of Sapporo and stretches for about 1.5 kilometers. It showcases large snow sculptures that often include replicas of famous buildings, characters from popular culture, and scenes that tell stories or convey messages. These sculptures are illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere. Susukino, Sapporo's entertainment district, features ice sculptures that glitter among the neon lights of the area, with the Ice Sculpture Contest being a highlight. Tsu Dome is more family-oriented, offering snow slides, snow rafting, and the opportunity to see snow sculptures being made.
    The Sapporo Snow Festival is not just about viewing sculptures; it offers a wide range of activities and experiences. Visitors can enjoy live music, traditional and international food stalls, and cultural events that showcase the heritage of Hokkaido and the Ainu, the indigenous people of the region. The festival is a testament to the creativity, community spirit, and resilience of the people of Hokkaido, embracing the harsh winter to create an event that is both awe-inspiring and inviting.

    Was curious why Sapporo receives so much snow after watching a few snow removal videos. It's basically the same reason the Great Lakes region gets lake effect snow here in the United States. The cold air comes across the warmer water and causes the snow. In the case of Sapporo, the cold air comes from Siberia and the ocean's warmth causes the large snowfall. Just found it interesting, lol.

      Whenever I hear the phrase “lake effect” in the winter, it’s the same as hearing “too much snow”. I wonder if Sapporo has a similar phrase for “here it comes!” 😄

    🇧🇷🇧🇷 NONE of them is like JAPAN. The world desires a japanese society . Prepare to be amazed: BRAZIL has more japanese descent than the WHOLE Japanese society in JAPAN ITSELF. DID YOU KNOW THAT? YOU DIDN'T! Among all people on eath , WE BRAZILIANS wish the ENTIRE JAPAN WOULD MOVE TO BRAZIL. WE LOVE THESE PEOPLE !! 🇧🇷🇧🇷

    Japan is the most peaceful country in the world with very polite and considerate people and very very low crime rate. It is very homogeneous with practically all Japanese. So, please tell me again how wonderful diversity is.

    Sometimes I wish I was Japanese, or at least married a nice Japanese girl and had a chance to relocate there. Its rare to see a high functioning, high trust society these days, one that has managed to retain its demographic makeup and culture. I hope Japan never loses this, because its becoming a rarity now.

    Nice, but the Snow sculptures are nothing compared to the ones in Harbin, China.

    • @saaccitt
      @saaccitt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I searched for the Harbin Snow Festival. Yes, there are large ice structures, but they would not be allowed in Japan for safety reasons. And in terms of the variety of statues, Sapporo has a lot of domestic creations, while Harbin has buildings, Buddhist statues, and Mickey Mouse-like shapes
      Harbin is an event that started 40 years after Sapporo. Did you imitate it as usual?
