I tend to use the amazon mail boxes. Except for food we tend to buy online for things we need or want. I mostly make doll houses or doll house furniture with them so no issues. Or some DIY project.

Yes, we had a potential problem with a shoe box from the local indoor swap meet years ago. While our son was trying on a pair of tennis shoes, I caught sight of a baby roach 🪳 scurrying inside the shoe box. We bought the shoes. As we were driving, but were still in the parking lot, I told my husband what I saw. He immediately pulled up to a trash barrel, removed the shoes and threw the box away. We tied the shoes up tightly in a shopping bag, drove home, and immediately threw the tennis shoes into the washing machine! Thankfully, we didn't get roaches. And we never shopped at the indoor swap meet again! 🙄

Hi! I’ve used diaper boxes and dollar tree candy boxes. I’ve used the Ty beanie boo boxes from hobby lobby. Those from stores are free. My little ones own beanie boos and those boxes worked perfect for them. ☺️

So I worked at a big box store for over 10 years. First of all, it is much easier for us to break down the boxes and put them in the baler than it is to pick out boxes and save them for customers that may or may not show up for them. Secondly, employees get first choice of boxes and customers get the left-overs unless the customers happen to have a good friend or relative that works there. The wonderful paper boxes always went to employees. Also, employees tend to forget to set them aside. Some big box stores actually have boxes that are required to be returned to the distribution center or they will be charged, same with some better pallets. By all means, if you have a friend or relative that works at one of these places, go ahead and ask. I hate to be a party-pooper, but that’s the way it is. I always treated customers with respect and tried to help them when I could, but just because I was extremely nice and said it was no problem, doesn’t mean it really wasn’t a problem. We also didn’t take them to a recycle center. The recyclers would come pick up the big bales of cardboard and pay us for them. I totally agree about not getting them from grocery stores and restaurants though! Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have had more than I can up cycle from my own Amazon shipments. 😂 My daughters also always buy their kids’ diapers in big cases. Those boxes were exactly the right size for my closet shelves. I covered them with faux leather and they look very high end. I love your videos. You always have such great creative ideas.

Best place, office building trash rooms.
    "But that's trash!"
So are the discards at the stores. In an office building, there should not be food. The trash room won't smell, there won't be bugs, and the dumpsters may be rusty but not grimy. They often segregate the cardboard for recycling.
The best are the giant boxes the tp for the restrooms comes in. These are usually about perfect. But look for smaller boxes with Styrofoam coolers inside. These are used to ship medicine to doctors in the building. It's a good box and a free six-pack cooler. You can also get those boxes for reams of paper sometimes. I've gotten several bushel plastic tubs full of old papers that I just tipped out.
Don't miss any covered platters from sheet cakes, veggie trays, and so on. You hose them out then flip them over. Suddenly, they are plastic boxes with snap-on lids! Lightweight use, though, like bows and pinecones, bubblepack or foam. Not good for paper or wood.

You should also avoid boxes from backyard bird shops & feed stores. Bird seed & animal feed can be infested with critters. Mostly pantry moths! I've had to deal with these before. I also had an infestation of tiny flour beetles. Had to throw out all my shelf stable food. Took a good month of constant cleaning, using different detergents etc.

    COSTCO, hands down.
I am somewhat of a “box aficionado” myself (haha!) and my current favorites are divided boxes used for small oil or spice bottles, sturdy white boxes used to hold six large hair product bottles, oversized flat “boxes” used to hold boxes of disposable masks, as well as (certain) stackable, interlocking berry boxes.
I recently FILLED many berry boxes ~with books, homeschool supplies and an overabundance of art this-and-that~ and stacked them ~upwards of 6ft high!~ to store while transforming my old craft/storage room into a homeschool room and creative space for my son and I. 😆
Those berry boxes have been loaded up, stacked, unstacked, shuffled around, sorted through - holding a LOT more than berries, yet they’ve remained sturdy and strong through it all. (Many have even gone on to a fellow crafter. 😄)
I sure enjoy your videos, lady. Many ♥️s to you!!

I recently got some tomato boxes from the pizza restaurant. No problems or creepy crawling things for me. I called and told them that I was a teacher who needed some and would they mind setting some aside for me? Although I'm retired now, I know from personal experience that people are more than happy to help us teachers out. Once a teacher, always a teacher just in the reserves now and no longer active 😀 . Anyhow, they're very sturdy, have lids, are a decent size, and have cutout handles on the sides. If I'm getting boxes from Walmart or Target I try to go in the evenings when they're restocking. That way I'm able to pick the boxes that I want for myself. TFS, be 🙏🏼 blessed and stay 😷 safe.

I keep "good boxes" for three or four months before I recycle. It makes it so much easier to store items in a deep cupboard when there is a box to pull out instead of stacking ten items to get to the thing I need in the back.

    • @kkrolf2782
      @kkrolf2782 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@user-mv9tt4st9k There is a clever fella out here on youtube who’s come up with a PHILOSOPHY (AND a product: EZStud something) that addresses just that problem. The philosophy being: NEVER store “things” more than ONE item deep, unless they are identical. Bloody hard to do, I know, especially in a kitchen setting, but I pulled a variation on YOUR box in the cupboard. I took a large box; cut off the “front” and “top”; cut down the sides to the point where there was only enough to keep the “back” attached to the “bottom”; attached a loop of packing tape at the front edge of the “bottom”. So, now I have a slid-out “tray” that gives me access to the items at the back, but I can also see most of what I have stored there (mostly plastic storage containers).

Frankly, I would add Wal Mart & Target to the good-but-beware type of store. I don't know about where you are, but here we have the Wal Mart Supercenters, which sell groceries, & even Targets that sell packaged food/groceries. Again, I would just caution viewers about that at those places, to make sure the boxes don't have or won't attract critters. For whatever reason, we have started having a tiny issue with silverfish in our house. I've especially seen them with my scrapbooking & cardmaking papers. As a result, for the 12x12" papers I keep in paper holders on my small shelving unit, I got the 2-1/2 gallon storage zipper bags (Wal Mart & even Dollar Tree carry these) and put my paper into those before putting them in the paper holders. They hold several sheets each. I do leave the zipper seal open slightly to discourage mildew. So far, so good! I keep my letter-size sheets of cardstock in job ticket holders, and the little buggers don't seem to bother those, for whatever reason. Anyway, thank you especially for the tip about the corrugated boxes & all the little "hiding places" in the middle of the pieces. I never would have thought of that! Do you have any experience with the cardboard tubes that fabric stores keep their large fabric rolls on, like 54"-wide home decor fabric? I saw a tutorial for using those to make a cat tree, & would like to try that. (You wrap them in sisal rope and/or carpet for the vertical supports.) We have a JoAnn's fabric & craft store relatively nearby that I am thinking of asking for leftover tubes. I don't believe they're corrugated, so I would think it would be safe. Any thoughts? Thank you for sharing these tips. I hope y'all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)

Hallmark stores have some of the best boxes around. Card shipments come in a cardboard box with 2 trays inside which are great. Their Christmas shipments that start around August or earlier come in any range of sizes, especially small boxes inside the bigger ones which have so many uses. You can even get boxes that giftwrap is sent in which is great for storing your own giftwrap. Source: former Hallmark employee for 25 years. And btw, I would avoid stores like Walmart that rely one imports from Asia. You have no idea what tiny pests are in there and a lot of invasive insects have come here that way.

Great video! I needed some boxes, for home organization, so I asked around in my immediate area. Walgreens said "No," that they never let anyone have boxes. The grocery store, New Seasons, would let me, but only if I got dirty boxes that had fruit in them, which couldn't be recycled otherwise. I tried to use their boxes, but couldn't get over how filthy they looked and ended up buying brand new boxes online that I just assembled one at a time, as I needed them. It was so much better! Absolutely avoid grocery store boxes! I love your idea on getting ream paper boxes! As well as the shoe boxes, but many of those smell chemically--they need a good airing out, and maybe even a spritz of something you like the smell of better.

    • @brennanarmacost1762

I bought book boxes, because they're not too big and very sturdy. My cat, though, loved to scratch on the boxes until they were completely shredded on one side, so I'd have to flip the box around and when both sides were ruined, I would have to assemble a new box. I wanted cardboard boxes because they're better for the environment, but maybe for my situation, I should have gone with practically indestructible plastic tubs instead.

My imperfect timing to watch this video Norrine. I bought some new furniture and as I was breaking down the boxes to go in the recycling bin, I saw they weren't small enough. So I grabbed my exacto knife and started cutting. I was halfway through cutting the box my steel bedframe came in when I realized "I should put these on Craig's List. SomeBody will want them." I have a couple of furniture grade boxes; a Mattress box, a box from two dining room chairs and a 24" patio table box. I also have a bunch of assorted shipping boxes from Walmart, Ikea and Amazon. Those are all broken down and inside of a garbage can box that I got from Walley's. Watching this video, I see that I'm still going to put them on Craig's List with the stipulation that you take one, you must take it all. That will be two separate 'take one...', one for the furniture grade and one for the rest. I don't mind braking them down and cutting them up, but I'm sure somebody would want them.
I pray you had a nice Thanksgiving Day.

I recently bought from DOLLAR TREE a “File Box” that even has reinforced side panel edges to accommodate HANGING FILES. I’d not rely on the strength of the materials and construction of these to actually store files of any heft, but I do plan to reinforce all sides, and, maybe, cover the whole thing in contact paper or craft paper. A lot of work for a file box? Perhaps. BUT, the aspect that makes it worth my while is that this file box is only 6” front to back (by the standard height & width of files), and so will accommodate my Embossing Folders, and the DVD Cases I’m storing my paper crafting Stamps in.

Minnn-eeeee! Excellent vid, I gotta tell ya'! I mentioned before that I have a boat load of boxes here, albeit a small boat, it's a boat load nonetheless. Simply by luck it happens that none of the boxes in my current stash are from places on your no-no list, but must say, I remember getting boxes before, like 20 or 30 years ago, from the grocery store and actively seeking out produce boxes because they were super sturdy and had a lid that was pretty much a duplicate of the box itself, 'member those? Now I mostly have plastic boxes for storing my craft stuff but the actual BOXES boxes that I have for storage in my hall (such as it is) closet I purchased from Walmart because they (1) are sturdy and have the cut outs to facilitate lifting them, (2) they have lids, and most importantly (3) they match the esthetic I've got goin' on here! I'm KIDDING! What?!!? 🤭 They actually fo match but that's just a perk - they really are nice, strong boxes.
Just wanna check, did you get my email last Saturday evening? Once I hit [enter] I watched to make sure it went, but when I looked at it today I couldn't find anything telling me for sure that it did indeed leave here and head south and thrn west on the 10!

If you get a priority or other box from the post office in your mail delivering a purchase or gift, by all means, recycle it. Make it over. Make it pretty. Go to town with it!
But please Don't use the free shipping boxes from the post office for anything other than shipping.
That's considered abuse of postal supplies and will make them eventually start charging more and more for shipping, or charging for the boxes when you get them instead of when you pay for shipping (part of the shipping charge goes to paying for those supplies) or they may stop handing out boxes at all. Like they did with priority tape. People got rolls of priority tape for free and then used it for other things instead of taping up shipping boxes. Now you can't get priority tape any more.

I asked what they did with large boxes, like appliance cartons, as I fabricate out of cardboard and other packaging. His reply was, "Oh we just cut them all up into small pieces and toss in the compactor. We sell boxes." And with that, I knew I would get nowhere lol. Apparently, building actual nice things and furniture is a thing in other countries. US, naw.
