  • This was an #excursion we will never forget, for better or worse. We decided to do an #airbnbexperience to a #hotsprings. We thought we would be headed out into the wilderness, but instead ended up hiking down into a canyon between two huge cities. In the canyon, we found #rivers and #waterfalls... of effluent and sewage water. The water was dark brown and extremely foamy.
100 years ago this valley would have been an incredible tourist attraction with a beautiful river and several cascading waterfalls. Instead, because the cities of #Guadalajara and #Zapopan dump their sewage water into the river, this is what you get. We've never seen anything like it and, while this was educational, hope to never again.
Still, we hiked down into the canyon and ended up at an area where freshwater was bubbling up out of the ground. We would not call this a hot spring, the water was more lukewarm. But it was clear and quite lovely... if you could get over the horrible smell of the giant sewage waterfall cascading down next to it.
Here is the thing. There were a few kids there playing in the spring. The fact is, the poor people of this area come here to relax and enjoy themselves. To them, this is a worthwhile activity. This is what they have. Who are we to judge them for enjoying themselves here despite the sad nature of what is right next to them?
Just imagine, this river must meander through the country and dump into the ocean. It is a dead river. There are no animals drinking from its banks. There are no birds circling over it. This valley - except for this one little #oasis - was completely devoid of life. And yet, in the spring, there were hummingbirds and dragonflies and other small animals. It's like - just like the people around them - they knew this is the only living, lovely area in this entire canyon.
We spend a long time viewing the most beautiful places in the world. But seeing this, seeing the result of the irresponsibility of humans - it was eye (and nose) opening. We do not regret going on this experience. We found it #educational more than anything else. But in the end, we felt more sadness than joy at witnessing the impacts humans have on our planet. In so many cases where humans go, where we gather... filth and death follow in our wake. We felt this post was important because this is part of the world we live in. It's not always butterflies and big smiles, adventurers. Sometimes it's, well, what we called "The Oasis at Poop Falls." It's real name is Agua Nacida río San Juan de Dios. 😞
