  • You've probably heard conflicting information about the safety and efficacy of hormone therapy for menopausal and post-menopausal women-you may even have heard that it's dangerous. As our guest this week says, "the bottom line is, that's nonsense." Let's set the record straight. This week, Dr. Sandi unpacks the complex history and science of hormone replacement therapy with her friend and colleague, women's health and hormone expert Dr. Felice Gersh (‪@FeliceGershMD‬ ).
    In this conversation, Dr. Felice debunks the now-infamous Women's Health Initiative study that drove decades of healthcare practitioners and their patients-including Dr. Sandi-to avoid hormone replacement therapy (HRT). She shares the science behind why this study was flawed and highlights the importance of bioidentical hormones, emphasizing their role in addressing conditions like osteoporosis, cardiovascular issues, and cognitive health.

      It's hard to find anything about that. It's all for taking HRT lately. Tons of doctors on-line pushing HRT lately . Read their book or their tel-a- zoom calls at $200 plus. Menopause is not a disease. I'm looking for more natural ways. Are we supposed to be on hormones all our lives starting with birth control, then for peri- menopause and finally menopause ? I've been on HRT for 5-6 years. I can't tolerate progesterone. I want to go off hrt. This post will probably be taken down.

      No to pellets for estrogen. The preferred hormonal medication delivery is Estradiol transdermal patch, and if you still have your uterus, you should also take oral micronized progesterone.

    It's confusing if she is talking only about equine when she is talking benefits in the first 14 minutes. So transdermal equine estrogen has no increased risk above baseline (~14 mins in)?

    • @nicolemerz1731

      The modern estradiol does not come from pregnant horses anymore, but comes from YAM roots or soy. The molecule is 100% identical with the once that are created in our ovaries, so they now fit the receptors in our cells perfectly like a key in a lock! There are many different ways how to get the bodyidentical modern hormones into our bodies. For a beginner i would recommend transdermal gels + micronized Progesteron in pills that you have to swallow and which make you sleep like a baby ( it's a kind of body identical valium, the healthiest and best sleep aid available)... doctor's prescribe the modern HRT. If it is expensive or compounded I would not take it, but you have to educate yourself with the help of the internet first before you go to the doctor because they are still much too often pretty clueless... 😢
      I would recommend watching the podcasts of Dr Louise Newson, as Dr Gersh follows a different philosophy ( which includes still having regular periods which the majority of women (me included) prefer not to have😊))...

      Transdermal estradiol is a totally different estrogen product from the CEE (conjugated equine estrogens) used in the Women's Health Initiative. Transdermal estradiol is human identical and avoids liver metabolism so it is extremely safe and beneficial, just like the estradiol made in the ovaries of a reproductive aged woman.

    I'm a little confused because as we get older and we go through menopause part of that is the loss or decrease of hormones but if we need them so badly why does our body quit making them? is it our diet is that the reason why our bodies aren't producing the hormones that we need? what is the root cause?

      @@Katepwe if we need these hormones throughout our life why does our body naturally stop producing them? Is it lack of exercise, being overweight, metobolic dysfunction, inflammation in the body... Why? There has to be a reason if we still need it, other than are just getting older.

    • @FeliceGershMD
      @FeliceGershMD หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@triciaskiles no amount of healthy diet and exercise will prevent menopause. Historically, menopause was beneficial because decreasing hormones caused decreasing fertility as women aged. This meant that pregnancies would be spaced farther apart and then would cease, improving a woman's odds of not dying in childbirth and thus increasing the odds of survival of her offspring. The collateral damage of women experiencing osteoporosis and heart disease after menopause was evolutionarily worth the trade off, especially because most women didn't live into their 60s, 70s, and 80s when the health effects of menopause really start to show themselves. Hope this helps!

      Why not do Yoga plus take HRT?😊 : a hormone deficiency cannot be addressed by exercise or food only - it's all interconnected. So get your hormones back, eat well and exercise. And if you do get cancer, stay on HRT because it did not cause it in the first place. You're survival rate will be much better and your risk of recurrence is lower! Study the book of Professor Dr Avrum Bluming ( rotes wife and his daughter breast cancer survivors, and he is a world-renowned breast cancer oncologist - it will enable you to make a evidence-based decisions instead of simply observing coincidences and interpreting them as "facts".

      I take excellent care of myself. I eat extremely well, and I exercise. Unfortunately in perimenopause all the way into post menopause I was waking every single night about ten times. I could no longer function after thirteen years of such broken sleep. No amount of supplements, healthy foods or exercise helped me with sleeping through the night until I went on plant based hormones. I have been sleeping great ever since and am grateful.
