  • In this video I take in a beautiful Mexican Red Knee who was for some reason, left abandoned in poor conditions. Although I am sad someone would leave an animal (especially caged) I am happy she made her way to us where we can spoil her and keep her safe

Deja vu! My Rose Hair came to me via a similar situation. She was abandoned at a little pet store I go to. The owner said that he came in one day and she was sitting by the front door in her tank. It had about one inch of very old packed web covered dirt, no water bowl and no hide. There were a couple of carapace from previous Molt's so I know she had been in there for a long time. She is very old because I have had her for two years now and she has never melted in my care. She has never thrown with threat posture and as often as not when I open the enclosure I have her in now she will very daintily come out and she likes to just hang out on my hand for a while. Very sweet girl that somebody got bored with. Their loss but my gain. I love her so much. Rosie is such a sweetheart!

That´s so sad... From the drawing on it, I would probably say, it was the pet of a kid and the parents left it there...
I personaly like to keep my spiders in bigger enclosures than they need, but I´m also feeding my spiders with tweezers, so they don´t have problems finding food. It doesn´t look like the owner checked if she ate or not. She got a way better home now so thank you for adopting her =)

oh gosh this is actually rly sad...idk but it makes me feel like someone did what they could for her bcus that weird cricket box thing is like something someone might do if they wanted to leave her food supplies for a long time. and when its someone going in to renovate a house often they dont get those houses in "normal" circumstances its when houses are neglected and sold at auction and stuff. and big glass tanks arent exactly cheap, its like bad pet shop advice, oh yeah you have to buy this expensive glass tank for a tarantula, then they painted on it and stuff oh now Im just imagining bad stuff happening to ppl 😢
well at least she has a good home now and such a beautiful spider I think she will be ok w/ one pedipalp

My T.Vagans is the same, it loves to come out at night and have a good old wander. Before it's first moult with me it used to stay out and walk around all the time and the only time it was in it's burrow was when I would disturb it.

    • @caboosemacs

I always wondered if the reason keepers put them in tiny enclosures, similar to office cubicles was because they have a billion others they need to lift and sort to feed etc. For a person who just has one, it's seems like even that 10 gallon is too small of a surface area to run around, I agree with the falling height tho. When I saw the new enclosure, there just isn't any room for the T to stand on dirt without stepping on some other element, I'm not a keeper so maybe I just don't get it...

    • @_YellovvJacket_
      @_YellovvJacket_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

More space is always good, for anything. I have a Lp in a 60x40x40cm enclosure, and she uses pretty much the entire enclosure at night. I mean she would definitely do perfectly fine with half that space at her current size, but if I can pürovide that space and she can use it, why not? But you also have to consider peopel that are keeping hundreds of tarantulas don't have a whole ass aircraft hangar to store them, so obviously they have to reduce the size of enclosures to a reasonable size, which for a tarantula can be quite small without them having any issues with it.

@@_YellovvJacket_ The thing that I go by always is that would you like to be kept in a small cage day in day out with little room to move, I wouldn't and neither should a tarantula live that way. Many people say that tarantulas don't care and can't feel pain, emotions ect but tbh I believe that is nonsense.

I feel you. I was a newbie T- keeper, and only had one avicularia as a "tree" species. The pet store that we get our snake food from, asked if we would take a T from a lady that was bitten twice and didn't want it anymore.... it was a P. Regalis, the enclosure was filthy, full of poop dead hoppers no waterdish . I her home, poor girl was close to death. I was terrified, after the horror stories the former owner told about her aggressive behavior, and research on the species. Luckily the rehouse went smooth, and she is with me ever since ,and I have never regretted getting her

    • @dorabrooks76

Wow! So many disturbing things to unpack in your comment!
I mean, it sounds like she _really_ needed some training on how to safely interact with Ts, especially fast, bolty, defensive ones with potent venom. And can you imagine being bit by a pokie not once, but *_twice_* ?! Yikes! 😓😱
Then there is the sad state of the poor T... heartbreaking! 😟😦 By the way, did you mean dead grasshoppers, or dead hoppers as in baby mice/rats? Either way is bad for a number of different reasons, of course, but if there was a bunch of dead vertebrate corpses- ugh, the smell! 😝🤢
Thank you for taking her in! I'm so happy it's worked out well for both of you! (Or all _three_ of you, if you include the original owner. 😉 I'm glad she realized it'd be better to rehome her spider, too.) 😄

Honestly this looks exactly like the situation I ended up in when taking in a spider. When she came to me for the 12 hours I had her. She had sand substrate, a light shining on her, and no place to burrow or web. I don’t know what kind she was. Like I said I had her 12 hours before I rehomed her because of the nightmares I had. But I found her a home with someone who knew what she was doing and got her into a much better enclosure and situation. Looking back in it after everything I’ve learned now, makes me really glad I didn’t keep her because I had absolutely no idea how to care for her.

  • @fangsnscalesdownunder3941

The general attitude toward spiders is so bad a lot of people think 'it's just a spider who cares' I encounter those people with snakes aswell and it's sad but they say they love all animals. I've spent a couple of thousand at the vet alone on my snakes over the years I recently lost my jungle carpet with heart disease and my gorgeous diamond and even my vet cried. If people get a pet they have to be willing to care for it properly. Just want to say Kat I love your videos and I hope they help change some attitudes toward spiders the level of care you show them is awesome. Thanks for saving her!

The bug boxes are supposed to be used as a "shaker" feeder. You punch the hole in the side, shake out desired crickets and then tape over the hole. There's food in the middle for the crickets as well. You aren't supposed to just leave it in the cage but it is a decent product for people who don't want to touch crickets.

Not that abandoning an animal so ever good but wow what a sweet girl. With how the cage was it looks like it was a child's pet and they child probably got bored and when they left just decided "well it's just a spider" Very sad I'm glad you got her

This made me smile sooo much! She was so calm too, considering she was abandoned she should be flicky and strikey lol! Great video!

My first T was a G rosea from a pet store who I assume was wild caught (I only buy captive bred now) and she is the chillest sweetest spider ever. She never kicks hairs or threat postures. Its safe to assume this spider was wild caught too. I wonder if other people have similar experiences with wild caught? Are they normally chill?

Imo terrariums are nice to see for the environment itself also, not only for the animal in it, so even if it looks like wasted space for the tarantula, it's not for the human eye (when it's well done... like, I loved @the dark den Petko's waterfall tarantula enclosure. I never kept animals at home, only plants, the green and the water's noise are awesome)

I have a T in a ten gallon bc I got it from someone who didn’t want it... she also actually spends a lot of time out of her burrow as well

I'm nervous around large spiders and I'd never get a tarantula (mostly because I see myself being too scared to handle it, and I feel like I wouldn't able to give it the good life it deserves) but I've found myself really liking your tarantula vids lately, especially the feeding videos! Even if they're not my kind of pet (i'm more of a cat person heheh) it's really cool to learn about them!

At the pet store they tell you to get those boxes to “make your life easier” because they themselves are terrified of spiders.

If you didn't take Peaches, I would have. She is a really cool spider. To abandon her was terrible and moronic. Hell, if they didn't want her they could have sold her for $200.00. But I guess their ignorant loss is your gain - and ours! Thank you for sharing her with us.

So I'm trying to get this straight because I just removed a fine screen mesh off a Zilla enclosure to replace it with something more T friendly. It's the top of a 10 gallon tank that will be bioactive & full of plants, it's a glass tank with no vents besides the top. I want it to have plenty of ventilation so I decided to replace the mesh with a wider mesh such as chicken wire. Something along the lines of 1/4 inch squares. Something plenty big to allow air flow and spider legs to get through without getting stuck on the mesh, while keeping the rest of the spider from escaping. My understanding is that their tiny claws get stuck in the tiny screen openings. Wouldn't wider openings take care of that issue? I mean I COULD replace it with plexiglass with holes drilled, just wouldn't have a lot of ventilation.
I'm very new to spider keeping and have never experienced one getting stuck. I'm leaning on the rest of the community for advice!😁 so far T ppl have been very welcoming and helpful. And you're right! I felt bad about my 1st T
    (Juvi Tliltocati albopilosus )
being in a tiny enclosure, she's now in a 8×15×10 bio enclosure and to my knowledge she never leaves her hide. Which is fine, she'll grow and hopefully become more adventurous and I do enjoy the plants and look of the showcase, but I plan on getting tons more spiders, they definitely will not ALL get these huge enclosures.

I don't see how anyone can abandon such a sweet creature. Maybe something happened in their life that prevented them from getting her. At least she's in good hands now!!!
