    Tyler we call it dirty aluminum. Its the oxidation that has gotten into the metal. Its very hard to weld no matter how well you clean it. Great job. 👍

    • @Theghostofpeter
      @Theghostofpeter ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to acid wash it in order to weld it right.

    • @gregedmand9939
      @gregedmand9939 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep... Aluminum corrodes over time. Especially where something like urine and manure plays a roll. Acetone or other solvent doesn't have enough bite to remove much oxidation, it will act more as a degreaser. But you got the strength in there eventually. 👍

    • @ruadhscottygirl2480
      @ruadhscottygirl2480 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregedmand9939 If he kept the trailer washed down each time of its cow crud, (he sure does have a build up on the whole thing), would that have made a difference on the weld since not as much acid would have sat on the metal over time? Just asking since I know nothing about welding.

    • @gregedmand9939
      @gregedmand9939 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ruadhscottygirl2480 Absolutely. Washing off corrosive stuff extends the aluminum life. It's not as active a problem as salt-triggered rust is on steel, but still, taking care will make it last longer. The white stuff you see on aluminum is that metal's version of rust.

    Tyler, put a ball on the top of your loader bucket. It’s a real treat to “back” a trailer while driving forward and it’s super maneuverable. My Tuesday tip.

    For what it is worth department.. I worked in remote guard stations in central Idaho.. miles and miles from folks but infested with huge rats.. In the bunk house I put big rat traps with peanut butter on the trap and took new stove pipe about 8” in diameter and elevated it 15 inch and 3-4 feet long pipe.. The trap was screwed to the pipe at the top end. I put them near the sink on a counter top.. I would hear the trap go off clear the trap reset and go back to sleep. Some nights I got 4 or 5 .. I caught 15 rats in 4 days this way.. I might add there were 5-6 other traps in the building that never worked.. over a 10 day I caught over 35 rats this way. It’s some thing about a hole..the the stove pipe.. the smell and the one way entrance.. About a month later I came back and caught 4-6 more in ten days.. By the next trip there I saw no rat sign or caught traps. I caught
    zero rats in the 5-6 others trap.. You water trap has a very steep ramp..Make the ramp longer.. ha …I enjoy what and how you work on most
    everything you do.. it’s all good the way you live out each day..☺️👍

    Over 30 years as a welder. I've worked on many aluminum trailers. They ALL gave me some kind of grief. Welding on aluminum that has been exposed to road crud and cow sh** is hard, ( and frustrating) no matter how good you clean it.

    • @terrancemitchell3420
      @terrancemitchell3420 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it looks great, and if it holds it doesn't matter. Welding even right outside the shop is harder. There may be some impurities in that top weld, or something. You did well, don't worry about it.

    I had problems with those big rats last spring getting in the attic of my house. I knew we had a few mice, but these rats were huge. One got under my shower and died and smelled horrible for weeks. I had to get under the house and put wire mesh around all my drain pipes to keep them out. I ended up catching around 8 in the attic and a few more under the house with a large rat trap before I found where they were getting in, and I closed it up. A rat that size leaves a big tunnel in the insulation, so i was able to track where they were going. I ended up adding rat service to my pest control contract for an extra 5 bucks a month, and it's been worth it. Haven't heard any under the house or in the attic since.

    what went wrong with the welding is there was contaminants in the cracks that you couldn't have seen or cleaned out. next time you should cut of the old welds off or grind back the welds or at least grind out the cracks to get nice clean metal. great work though mate, I really enjoy welding and making stuff. it's certainly not easy but anything worth while isn't. I really dislike the throw away society we have become today so I can really appreciate when someone fixes something.

    Good job on the aluminum welding, it’s always a pain to do. Hard to get it clean enough in a stock trailer, never sure what the base alloy is to match with the filler metal. Brake clean has carbon tetra chloride in it and when exposed to welding rays causes it to give off phosgene gas, which can hurt you or could kill you if you inhale it.

    It is a good practice to just not use brake cleaner to clean metal before welding, but the issue is with Chlorinated Brake Cleaner. If you positively have Non-Chlorinated brake cleaner, you're good to go. Easier to just use acetone or carb cleaner, though.

  • @terrypotter4779
    @terrypotter4779 ปีที่แล้ว

    When welding aluminum you need to know the Alloy you are welding (6061, 4043 etc) and the filler has to be compatible, when repairing aluminum you usually don't have that info like when manufacturing new so it is a guessing game. I repaired an aluminum sprayer tank for a guy 1 time and the weld got so brittle that it cracked before he got it back to his farm. He brought it back and I cleaned out the weld and re welded it again. Cracked before he got it back to his farm, I hate to repair aluminum not knowing the Alloy makes it a pain to repair and the customer usually doesn't understand when it isn't successful.
