Messerschmitt BF-110 r/c crash

  • Here is the last flight of KFS's beloved BF-110.
    Having just changed the electric engines for 2 x DLE-20 petrols, the plane spun in after a couple of minutes of flight. Further investigation revealed a screw had dropped out which secured the left wing-end section to the aluminium spar. Subsequently, it worked itself loose and rotated. This can be seen if you view the slow-motion footage taken from the ground, pausing the film as the plane rotates.
    We love this plane, though. If you're going to build a petrol twin in this class (.91-1.20 each side), those DLE-20s are well worth considering.
    Will order a new kit and transfer most of the old stuff into the new, taking special care next time to do our engineering and pre-flight checks more thoroughly.

    That was a great effort - well flown and executed - heartbreaking ! All of us that do this regularly crash, it's just a matter of when. This was worse because even your fine piloting could not save it because of the failure. Those GoPro cameras are amazing for their durability - this is another testament ! Thanks for the onboard view - I video every flight, upload the best takes and can diagnose problems that I could not on the ground (or see what happened FROM the plane !)

    I've been an RC pilot since 1980. Love the hobby!!! You have done a beautiful job with the plane as well as the fine editing job on the video. Unfortunately....all of our planes have "expiration" dates. We just don't know when it is. My mentor said to me back in 1980...."there are two kinds of RC planes. Those that have crashed and those that are about to. Sorry for your crash.

      And what is the beautiful job one can do on a ARF or RTF model?

    • @trumpetman514
      @trumpetman514 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was referring to an actual "Build"....from blueprints and a "lumber yard of wood" in a box. I'm from the old school. I like to build my models. I have some ARF's....but they are not as well built as my other models.

      So we agree that other than take the credit card outside the wallet there is not much with building a model.

      Carbon like rc models. ARF and RTF models bought the destruction of the hobby. He didnt even bothered to rebuilt it. He bought a new one.

      @trumpetman514 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guardian Observer Right now....60% of my fleet of planes have gone into the ground...most of them were built from plans...I am considering picking up a few ARF's so I have something to fly....Most of my friends, in my club, are engineers and like to build from scratch...to each his own. They build some extraordinary models. Happy Holidays to you.

      I agree that unfortunately scratch builders fate is to stay more in workshop and less fly his models.

    Wow, the on board sound was really realistic. Would love to shoot thru a canopy to improve the effect. I snapped a spar on my test flight of a 1939 Maxwell Basset Cardinal (free flight with power) I have converted to slope soaring. Then crunched the front end hand launching a test flight into too strong a headwind. It ballooned from I think a CG problem. She's ready again with a strengthened wing and nose. Should be a sweetheart as soon as I master the test glides. We fly at the bluff along the beach here in Long Beach California. Thanks for the great show and happy landings. Paul V

    Thank you for the video. It is obvious that you were quite proud of the plane, What a pity it came to such an ending. I Almost built a model once myself, when I was 15 with balsa wood. That was 60 years ago, and then just when I had the wings in place my dog ruined the lot, after sanding down the nose block and all. I will watch this space for your next flight.

    Man! That is truly heartbreaking. I feel for you. I lost a few great planes through structural or R/C fail. I bent a few from my one poor piloting, too. Seems there is something new to go wrong in every flight. I had a big (6 ft WS) camera AC that I was using to photograph a large public picknick and the battery pack came undone and broke the ground wire. I had the A/C in a wide left-hand turn- Of course, all servos held steady in that flight configuration and the plane was in a death spiral with an ever-increasing turn, coming lower on one side and higher on the other- after 6 turns, she was nearing head level when she passed over the people. Absolutely nothing I could do about it- I so wished I had brought a shotgun. I just knew it would hit a kid or a lawyer. I rushed over to warn people to get out of the way. Just as I arrived the AC slammed into a large steel trash container. just fifty meters away from the crowd. I was never so thankful to see one of my aircraft crash. I lost a pretty expensive camera and the .90 engine was split I didn't mind at all, I figured I had gotten away cheap. I never again took a job flying near people. That A/C had been so reliable for many jobs, too- Never gave a problem until it really mattered.

    Thanks for sharing the video..... lol, hurt me to see her fall & I wonder if you ever
    fully determined what caused the frame to fracture on that wing? I know you took
    her home & looked close at everything that was left of it..... I thought at first that
    you had tried to roll her but I heard a distinct "cracking" of what was the entire
    wing. What was learned after you looked at everything closer?

    "'I'm not going to crash, I'm not going to crash, I'm not going to crash, I'm not going to crash!" (Later I crashed) Weak wing center folded during high G turn on a modified long wing OT Free Flight converted to slope. It was an original prewar kit of a Maxwell Basset Cardinal. A good objective preflight might have caught the structural weakness. Extra layers of coating might have been enough to strength the center of the wing. I rebuilt.

    Bugger the bloody airframe, who tunes your engines ??? I have NEVER heard a twin gasser in snyc so PERFECTLY. The hum from the onboard video was melodic, and not one splutter from either motor in the flight. VERY nicely tuned.
    Pity about the failure, not a major design flaw after all, as thought, but a really simple ASS BITER type one. OBVIOUSLY the single screw mounting isn't enough. Shame it took a nice model to find it out. I concede, it is rather hard to fly a model with 50% of the wing at 90 degrees to the other 50% of the wing.....

    I was just wondering - it hurts to see these fine models being smashed to pieces ;-)
    Surely you can just use some thin plastic "sheets", which it should be possible to fold up in a small space and would only weigh very little? I would imagine that 1-2 m^2 would be enough in most cases - a bit more for the very large models of course.
    And combine them with some sort of spring system or powder cartridge that can eject them in an instant out of tube.
