Absolutely amazing! As good as any 20th century music you'll find. British composers of the first half of the 20th century are vastly underrated, what a loss to a younger generation of up and coming composers anywhere! Herman Silochan, Toronto, Canada

I have never been able to understand the relative neglect of this very fine composer.

What an amazing score! Absolutely terrific music. I detected traces of Prokofiev Walton even R.Strauss (Salome) at 45.15 -45.50. Please let's hear more Bliss and also Walton.

Again, gotta love Bliss's work. You can't help but see the character in the ballet.

What a wonderful and Hypnotic score......I stood and listened in the wings as a dancer in this Ballet soaking up each note. I hear Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Wagner and Debussy...yet it maintains its uniqueness. Dark, Military and sensual all at once.

One of the greatest ballet scores, shamefully neglected in concert and on stage.

Sir Arthur Bliss. One of the great and highly original English composers of the 20th Century. The 1930's was his finest decade. A pity the BBC does not give his fine music anywhere near sufficient attention. Thanks to him, the Third Programme (now Radio 3) came into being, following his post as Head of Music at Broadcasting House in the early 1940's. Also, take note of the scoring for the string section in the close of this piece; inspiration for Bernard Herrmann's Psycho shower scene, - given the Black Queen stabbing the Red Knight!

It's hard to see why his reputation is not greater. He has been damned with faint praise like "not a first rank composer, but the best of the second rank". Perhaps because he enjoyed worldly success, becoming Master of the Queen's Musick, and had no Byronic self-destructive excesses in his personality. His music is also extremely "accessible", which is code for enjoyable and understandable (which academics can be sniffy about). It's also haunting, surprising and beautiful.

It has to be one of the greatest closing movements of any work anywhere at any time - truly inspired - and obviously connected with the 'fake' glory of the rise of fascism in the 1930s.

Prokofiev is not mentioned as one of Bliss' influences, but I would definetely put him up there as well. Bliss is my recent discovery. Great music!
