    hi - the chrome cap on the upper left side of the tailgate is not for show. It is the filler cap for the rear window wiper/washer system which is concealed inside the tailgate. This was an option available on Chrysler Corp wagons from 1968 through the 1971 model year. The rear system was operated by lowering the rear window then pressing the lower half of the washer switch on the instrument panel which sprayed the cleaning solution on the glass. Next, two 18-inch squeegees inside the tailgate would wipe the window clean as the glass was raised.

    Loved the sound of the early 70's Chrysler products starters.I used to have a 73 Dart sounded the same.

    My dad had a 1971 Town and Country with a 383 2 barrel. It did 11 mpg on Hwy and 6 mpg city. It was the car I learned how to drive in and went on my dates in high school. The spoiler on the back was meant to keep the back window clear of water with the wind. It had its gremlins. Major issue with that year was the radiator, which overheated due to a design flaw, it would have to be removed and chemically flushed every 2 years. Rust was an issue just behind the rear doors at the corner of the wheel well. The last thing I remember dealing with was the drive axil universal joints would break due to the torque because they were undersized. They were replaced at least 3 times in 8 years from 71 thru 79. Other than those, it was a beast. It produced 190 horsepower net (275 gross). Torque was 305 net (375 gross). Lots of memories.

    That is a beautiful car! I've always loved these old Mopar Woodies! Some people say it's not a Woodie, but I disagree with them. It is a Woodie and I agree with you.

    this wagon is fairly well equipped it appears including front cornering lights (lamps located on the side of each front fender which automatically illuminate in the direction of a turn when the turn signal is engaged with park or headlamps on - fairly rare - especially on Town & Country wagons)

    Brings back memories. My grandparents had a '71 Town & Country, and I spent a lot of time in it, not driving of course. Went from Northwest Indiana to California at least once in it, and my grandparents made that trip in that car once per year for many years. Just set the cruise control to 64mph (55mph speed limit) and cruise until the radiator cap blew up in Arizona. Replace it, go to Cali, put another 1,000 miles there and go home. Great, smooth car.

    God I miss seeing cars like this on the road. This car reminds me of my Grandpa...he loved big, powerful gas-guzzling behemoths like this. It didn't matter if it was a sedan or a station wagon...it just had to be BIG and powerful. Personally, I would love to drive a car like this cross-country--raw power and the open road.

  • @darrellepickering8433

    I had 1 of those with the 440. Very well equipped. It would run 140 mph. It didn't start to run until 70 & then WOW!

  • @robertbaratheon9289

    This is essentially my dream car. It covers all the bases: a big V8, its a Chrysler, a station wagon, its a big car, and its a woody. Throw in a cassette player and its perfect.

    • @inkey2
      @inkey2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, throw in an 8-track tape player....more appropriate for the era

    • @robertbaratheon9289
      @robertbaratheon9289 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope sorry. I don't own many 8-tracks and my favorite music is from the 80s, the age of the cassette. Just about all of my favorite bands and songs are not found on 8-tracks.

    • @inkey2
      @inkey2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Baratheon well at least install a Lafayette citizen band radio with a long, tied down whip antenna.

    • @robertbaratheon9289
      @robertbaratheon9289 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have thought of doing that.

    • @inkey2
      @inkey2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Baratheon Ohhhhhh DO_IT_!!!! There is still a lot of people on CB. Buy a big old ugly-ass hibred tube/transistor model and get a bracket for under the dash. You may need a converter for automotive 12 volt systems. The big old type CBs are nice and ugly so hopefully nobody will want to steal it. Nothing screams 1970s like a station wagon with whip antenna....
      Channel 19 is the truckers favorite

    That brings back memories. My dad bought one new. His was white as compared to the cream here. 440,dual exh., Dual air cond., 8 track, 3rd seat, the works. My brothers and I always wished he had ordered a 4speed, that you could get. Rode many a mile between 70 and 73 when he traded it for a Dodge Maxiwagon. Ugh. Beautiful car here.

    For 1970 that model should be a 440 not a 383. I might be wrong but I don,t think so. Also four barrel carb. Horse power would be in the range of 350 to 375, not 290. Awesome beautiful car. Thanks for posting..

    • @darrellepickering8433
      @darrellepickering8433 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 383 I'm not sure was available. Mine was used & did have the 440 at 350 hp. Mine was dark blue with a blue interior , 3rd seat, all power & had an adjustable steering wheel, up & down as well as extended.

    We had a 72 Dodge Station Wagon. We looked at the Chrysler but the Dodge was had 97% the cargo space with like 500+ lbs LESS weight. Same frame and we ordered it with all the export heavy duty brakes, suspension, radiator, etc. Yes it had the big block with dealer installed headers. Torque city!! But other family members at various times owned Chrysler wagons and they WERE Great..
    Yes, some small things would go wrong but unless you were an idiot, if you wanted to keep it that long, any big mopar SW that DIDNT give the owner like 100 K miles I never heard of it
    Hey, thanks for the post

    I like the 1970 - 1971 Town and Country wagons. I have a 1972 Ford Country Squire in the classic 70s olive green / wood, mint all original inside and out, not a dot of rust is seen. These are nice classic cars worth preserving.

    If the A/C isn't like ice in that car even while sitting at idle, it may have been converted over to 134a. The old R12 especially in GM and Chrysler were notorious for freezing you out even on a 110 degree day.

    Madness!! That car is BIG!
    If I had money, I would buy that thing in a blink of an eye.
    Actually there is one up for sale right now in my country from 72, a two owner car which is actually in better shape than the one you had there, so the one deserving a trophy is this guy.
    All original, beige exterior and leather interior, original hubcaps and wheel cover.
    It looks immaculate, nothing less.
    I would buy that one and not letting it go again, but I will eventually when I have enough money :)

  • @727100bear
    @727100bear 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    the washer solution for the rear system is poured into the separate reservoir located inside the tailgate after removal of the chrome filler cap. The cap could typically be removed by using a quarter coin inserted into the indentation on the cap to turn it.

    Very familiar with this model. had one for 15 years. There is a glitch in the wiring. Tuen the emergency flashers on without the key on the ignition Then push the rear tailgate power window switch. The window will go down in a pulsating way When the flashers blink. Also the 383. 2bbl was the "dog" of the motor group.

    • @inkey2
      @inkey2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nooooo ...say it ain't so. A Chrysler with electrical problems?

    • @Smarty1171
      @Smarty1171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think any of those problems killed anybody. Unlike the GM ignition switch Ford tire blow outs and transmission jumping into gear from park. You see they all have problems from time to time. To single out one maker is silly. I wish I had a 1971 Plymouth Cuda with some electrical problems.

    • @78logistics
      @78logistics 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colonel Mustard a dog perhaps but it ran on regular gas. Similar to the 1969 Chev 396 2bbl and the Small Block 400 2 bbl of 1970.

    My boyfriend just said that the mopaar sw of that era look best with a slight rake in the rear. It would look more sleek if you shaved the door handles. It would also help if you installed the 300 Grill and power headlights. My father also used to say he would have liked it if he could remove the B pillar. I think so too. ❤
